First quarter blog: Saints 14, Panthers 7
NEW ORLEANS
The Saints held a 14-7 lead after a first quarter that featured 279 yards of offense and only one third-down situation.
Drew Brees converted that lone third down with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston with 2:50 left. It was Brees' 43rd consecutive game with a touchdown pass. He trails only Johnny Unitas (47) in NFL history.
The Panthers scored on their first possession of the quarter – an 11-play, 80-yard drive – that Cam Newton capped with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith on a fade route over Jabari Greer.
The Panthers were driving and in Saints' territory when the quarter ended.
