Captain Munnerlyn gets salary bump
At a time when the Panthers are in cost-cutting mode, cornerback Captain Munnerlyn hit on an escalator that takes his base salary from $565,000 to $1.31 million.
Munnerlyn said the escalator was triggered based on playing time over his first three seasons. Munnerlyn started the first 14 games in 2011 before being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Munnerlyn, a seventh-round draft pick in 2009, now has a cap number of $1.32 million.
The Panthers are reportedly more than $9 million over the salary cap of $120.6 million. They are expected to restructure the contract of linebacker Thomas Davis, and will have to rework other deals or release players in order to get below the cap by Tuesday's 4 p.m. start of the new league year.

So I guess the first round pick will get less than $9.million. a lot of players are gonna need to restructure their contract. We need to make room to sign johnathan Stewart . Can't afford to loose him.

What a waste. He's now costing the team twice as much but is just as terrible as he was before. Statistics prove he's hands down one of the worst coverage CB's in the league.

Cut Captain Munnerlyn then. Should cut him anyways. We need better than him.

Agree with Frank and Mark. Cut the Captain or give him some real tall cleats so he at least gets to 6' tall.

What???? Marty sure is a stupid GM. I was expecting this clown to be cut. He is a terrible corner. One of the weakest defensive players we have. This is money flushed down the toilet. Horrible business decision. I'd rather have offered that money a talented player.

This isnt a decision by the panthers this raise is due because of how much he played. This pay bump is happening because of the collective bargaining agreement fair pay act. So dont wash out marty hurney saying he is flushing money down the toilet. He isnt paying anyone extra.

For 1.3 million dollars we can do a lot better than the Captain.

I like captain for his heart... But I thinks he's a little overpaid now. espically since he is a nickel back at best this season(fingers crossed)
Posted by: zach | Mar 12, 2012 2:26:43 PM
yeah but as much as Hurney meddles in team business he should have been aware of that incentive...whether he negotiated it in or if it is truly league mandated as you say.
Munnerlyn is horrible and the team was bad, so benching him to save money would have been the move of a good GM. Which we don't have.

They have to pay him. It's per the union contract. He played in enough games to get the bump in pay. Marty has nothing to do with.
Captain is good for the nickel but he should not be playing corner. He played CB out of necessity

I think the panthers need to trade down and pick up Janoris Jenkins and Bruce Irvin. Janoris shut down three of the best receivers in last years draft. We are in a tight squeeze under the salary cap and then we have Munnerlyn here who we don't know what to do with. I think those two battling it out will be good for the whole team in general. I know Jenkins has been into some trouble and has a bunch of kids, but it obviously hasn't effected his play. Irvin is a so athletic, so I think he could be the guy we've been waiting for to increase the pressure on the quarterback. That right here will give us more interceptions and with davis and Beason coming back, I think we have a enough to stop the rush.

When are we going to start hearing about the team reworking deals and/or cutting players to get under the cap? Is the team that good at keeping things quiet, or is it something else? The deadline is 4pm tomorrow. It's hard to believe that none of the players have been told they're going to be released or have their deals reworked.

cut this joker. He's horrible! Maybe a decent nickel back, but that's even a stretch.

I guess we'll have to keep checking with espn.com & nfl.com to get our cuts & re-structured deals. Thanks Joe, will catch your column next week.

So, someone help me here. If this is fair pay for play (new CBA rule), then the Panthers can release or cut him if he doesn't fit in?????
Posted by: mark | Mar 12, 2012 3:18:52 PM
if this CBA thing isn't true then this is absolutely a horrible deal. At any rate, the Panthers should have cut this guy by now. He isn't worth the 500K.

Just wondering. With Vincent Jackson out there and given the need for a real number two receiver, should the Panthers be making some noise towards him??????

sign Dre Bly he lives in Charlotte.

Wow, would the next typical response be "Your momma?"
Frank, your first and last posts seems that you are having a discussion with yourself.

Janoris Jenkins a real shutdown corner !!!!!!!!

@Mark...I'd stay away from V-Jax and let Gettis come back and see what he can do. I like V-Jax but our O is fine.
I'd like to see em make a run at Carlos Rogers who I wanted to sign last yr but I believe SF already re-signed him (not sure). I know Mario Williams is out of the question but man would he look good in teal & black!

I was thinking the same thing Phillip. We probably won't know until after 4 p.m. tomorrow. The writers at the CO probably know some things but have been told not to say anything yet. The Panthers, historically, have never liked to discuss contract issues of any kind until they are official and they always take it down to the wire.

Just want to add, I am the one that provided the link with the stats showing that Captain is the worst corner in the league and Gamble was one of the best. Thanks Charlotte Observer for never being on the ball until a reader actually provides some real data behind an article. Lol
