New safety will compete with Martin
The Panthers signed free agent safety Haruki Nakamura to a three-year deal Friday, giving the former Baltimore Ravens backup a chance to compete for a starting spot.
Nakamura, 25, spent his first four seasons playing behind Pro Bowl free safety Ed Reed in Baltimore.
In Charlotte, Nakamura will compete against Sherrod Martin, who regressed last season in his second year as a starter.
Terms of Nakamura's deal were not disclosed.
Nakamura, a sixth-round pick in 2008 out of Cincinnati, has 23 tackles on defense and four pass breakups in 56 games.
Besides giving the Panthers another option at safety, Nakamura will try to improve their special teams. He tied for second on the Ravens last season with nine special teams tackles, and was their postseason leader with four special teams stops.
In another move, the Panthers released defensive tackle DeMario Pressley on Friday. Pressley, who played at N.C. State, saw action in one game – Week 17 at New Orleans – after being signed off the practice squad.

"What about him."
"What do you think about him?"
"I think he plays safety"

Yea Real Panther, I liked that quote too.
Reminds me of the old Tampa Bay coach John McKay back in 1976 when he was asked what he thought about the "execution of his offense..." and he replied "I'm in favor of it..."

This new safety sounds exciting... on his wikipedia page it says that his mom and dad and two brothers are all Judo champions

In the category of there are "lies, D@mn Lies & statistics..." we all probably agree that Ed Reed is a better safety than Sherrod Martin, but if you pull up the defensive back stats on NFL.COM for 2011 regular season. They actually have Sherrod Martin ranked 52nd and Ed Reed 95th with very similar numbers in most categories.
That's why you have to play the games rather than just look at numbers!

We got a guy that has been learning from a Hall of Fame safety and people are questioning this move??
To me, this was a great pickup. If we can get a solid CB and a rookie DE or DT with our first pick, I believe we're on the right track and could easily see positive results very soon.
I'm hoping Alshon Jeffery falls to the 2nd round and we can pick him up to compliment Smith.

Why are we signing crappy backup players? Hurney should be fired!

I like this move keep it up

Great pickup. Even if he doesn't end up being the starter, he can help our lousy special teams that cost us a game or 2.
With the amount of $ we have to spend, this is a great move.

Sounds like a good pickup. HAS to be better than Sherrod "the ghost" (where is he?) Martin.

Hate to interrupt such good news, but the word needs to be spread. We need people to stop voting for Cam in the Madden competition. We must make sure he does not get on the cover.

We also signed Kenny Onatolu, ST star from Minnesooota.

Martin made some really boneheaded plays last year. They can't have a safety back there taking the wrong angle at a guy when he is the last tackler with a chance and they can't have a safety who lets a guy get behind him when he is playing a prevent defense.

haha, yeah, that madden curse is some serious business. I think Cam can beat it, but not in his second season. That is just asking for a major injury.
