Panthers not likely to use tag

With a Monday deadline looming, many NFL teams will spend today playing tag with their free agents.

That's not the case with the Panthers.

While teams like the Eagles placed the franchise tag on WR DeSean Jackson on Thursday and the Ravens likely to do the same today with RB Ray Rice, the Panthers are not expected to use the tag.

Given that the Panthers are $9 million over the salary cap and without a marquee free agent, it wouldn't make much sense to do so.

The Panthers tagged center Ryan Kalil last year before locking up their Pro Bowl center with a long-term, contract extension. Kalil was one of seven of the Panthers' core players who received contract extensions following the lockout.

The Panthers have 10 free agents this year, but only one -- TE Jeremy Shockey -- is ranked among Pro Football Weekly's top 100 free agents. Shockey, who checks in at No. 92 on PFW's list, said last fall he'd like to return to Charlotte, although Panthers coach Ron Rivera said last week Shockey was considering retirement.

Several of the Panthers' other free agents were veterans who signed one-year deals last summer -- RG Geoff Hangartner, QB Derek Anderson, WR Legedu Naanee, LB Omar Gaither and DE Antwan Applewhite.

LB Dan Connor, a starter the last two seasons due to injuries to Thomas Davis and Jon Beason, will become an unrestricted free agent this month. Connor has indicated he wants to test the market.

I wouldnt mind Hangartner or Applewhite for depth if they will take low cost deals, otherwise, none of them need to be resigned. Next up, time to modify some existing deals to make them more cap friendly and free up some space.

Don't blame Conner at all. He has not been appreciated in Carolina...rightly so in comparison to a stud like Beason...look forward to watching Dan shine somewhere else.

Dan is nothing special, horrible in coverage, average run stopper, horrible blitzer, and also can't stay healthy.

Shockey has since vehemently denied any thoughts of retirement in communication with multiple sources.

Both Linebackers Beason and Davis should be CUTT...too many medical issues and WATCH. They will not play a full season in 2012-13...They are over the hill. Get some real youthful talent at Linebacker.

Southerboy jj you are dumb as your comments

shocky told espn that he does not want to retire. give him the tag.

Posted by: COOK | Mar 2, 2012 2:13:52 PM

Wouldn't mind seeing JS get the tag.....

Southernboy, why would you cut Beason? He's had one major injury and is the best defensive player on the team.

It'd be pretty stupid to cut him.

As for Davis, cut him and sign him back at league minimum. If we can get him healthy he's a great LB.

Southern boy must be a New England fan,,, cause people from the south Love Beason..... he is a beast.

Posted by: Suave | Mar 2, 2012 3:39:43 PM

Hangartner or Applewhite would be the only one's I'd offer deals to Unless Conners doesn't find a new team than I'd offer him one

Posted by: kepickle | Mar 2, 2012 3:44:41 PM

Conner goes to TB - count on it

Posted by: Holla | Mar 2, 2012 3:48:30 PM

There were players coming off the practice squad that was giving better production then Conners. He can go.

Shockey is too expensive. He was nice but I think we can get a couple kids to compete with the 3 TEs we have left. We've got to get under the cap, so he's probably gone, unless...

There's no way you tag Shockey-as much as I like the guy, it would cost the Panthers more money than what he's probably seeking in a contract, around 7-8 million. Either resign him to a 1 yr deal or see what Barnridge can do.

Yeah, put the franchise tag on your second best tight end. Even Hurney isn't that dumb.

<--- from the south and I HATE Beason. I love my panthers and will be a season ticket holder this year now that I finally moved to Charlotte. HOWEVER, I'm SOOOO sick of our cry baby defense and their injuries. Beason SHOULD be cut. So should MOST of the D that weren't rookies last year. Like Gamble... over-rated and over-payed. Thanks to John Fox we lost the only decent defensive player we've ever had (who btw was a TARHEEL!!!)

Posted by: Nate | Mar 2, 2012 4:43:07 PM

Nate you aren't a fan, you're a cowpile.

Posted by: buzzkill | Mar 2, 2012 6:05:55 PM

Ok, southern girl....u understand that u r a turd, right! Cut Beast, are you high? Behind P Willy beas is the best middle in the league. The first of the year (until mid September beason will still have to take it easy as be will not be 100% until October....so you want to cut him....you fool!)

Posted by: ester martin | Mar 2, 2012 6:07:56 PM

If you think cutting Beason is the best thing that can happen to the Panthers, read this out loud for all to heard.......I am WE TODD DID.....I'm SOFA KING WE TODD DID!!!!!

Posted by: Bruce | Mar 2, 2012 7:01:42 PM

Cut Beason? Morons. And how is Peppers the only good defensive player we've ever had? Minter? Mills? Rucker? Eric Davis? You're not a fan. Youre an idiot. Anyone who thinks we should cut THE 2ND BEST MLB in the gamd is also...an idiot. Lets cut Gross and Smitty too. Kill yourself

Posted by: Jon | Mar 2, 2012 7:54:27 PM

if were cutting beason why dont we cut cam newton too
if these people want him cut they must havr only started watching this year cause beason is a stud and before this year he was never hurt didnt he start like over 50 games in a row before that and hes young

Posted by: cboy | Mar 2, 2012 10:20:40 PM

You Panther FANS get too attached to the PLAYERS...I get attached to WINNING. CUTT BEASON AND DAVIS...Again neither will play the entire 2012-13 season because of injuries. SO where will that leave us? Just like last year out of the PLAYOFFS. Cam Newton cannot win the game by himself! He needs a defense that can hold a lead!

Posted by: Southernboy JJ | Mar 2, 2012 10:40:26 PM

Southernidiot JJ and Nate, you need to find a new team to root for if you think cutting Beason would make the Panthers any better. He's the 2nd best MLB in the NFL behind Patrick Willis, and a leader on our D. This is his first major injury in his entire football career, and you want to give up on him? You two are definitely not true Panthers fans.

Posted by: Jroc66 | Mar 3, 2012 10:12:28 AM

Cutting Beason would be one of the worse things the Panthers could ever do. He's the BEST MLB in the league. I think I smell some Saints fans...
