Politics and football

First comes the news this week that the NFL is moving the opening game of the 2012 season to a Wednesday night so as not to conflict with President Obama's acceptance speech the following night at the Democratic National Convention at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.

For the first time since 1948, the NFL will play on a Wednesday night. The game will be in the Meadowlands, home of the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and Super Bowl-boasting New York Jets.

The Giants will play someone -- Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Philly? It won't be the Panthers, who will play host to the Giants in Charlotte next season after the Democrats clean up the confetti and clear out of BoA Stadium.

Now, we learn that Obama is a closet combine fan.

During in an interview on ESPN's Bill Simmons' B.S. Report podcast, the First Basketball Fan showed he knows a thing or two about the pigskin, as well. Obama referenced the show put on in Indy by Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe, who moved his 346 pounds over 40 yards in fewer than five seconds.

Poe also bench-pressed 225 pounds a combine-high 44 times.

"They just had the combine and they were talking about some guy who’s like 340 and runs a 4.8 and has a three-foot vertical,” Obama told Simmons. “I don’t know what you do if a guy like that hits you.”

Obama was discussing the NFL's effort to make the game safer amid the spate of concussions among current players, and the long-term effects many former players experience.

Obama said he's not sure what the league can do with players getting bigger and faster, resulting in more violent collisions.

Enter Poe as Exhibit A.

Dang, I thought by now this thread would be full of rednecks dragging out the cliche, "The media has to go gaga over every little thing the president says, especially about sports. stop watching the combine and do your job"-type whining. Why is the train late today?
