Panthers draft class is signed

The Panthers took care of business Friday morning, getting each of their seven draft picks under contract four hours before the rookies will take the field for the first session of a three-day minicamp.

As reported Thursday, first-round pick and former Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly received a four-year deal worth a guaranteed $12.58 million as the No. 9 overall pick.

Second-round pick Amini Silatolu, the offensive lineman from Division II Midwestern (Texas) State, signed a four-year deal worth $4.93 million, with nearly $3.1 million guaranteed.

Under the NFL's new labor agreement, all draft choices get four-year contracts.

The Panthers' other draft picks are DE Frank Alexander (4th round), WR/PR Joe Adams (4th), CB Josh Norman (5th), P Brad Nortman (6th) and S D.J. Campbell (7th).

Rookies are not required to be under contract to participate in minicamp. Still, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney is glad to have wrapped up the process quickly.

“We are thrilled to have our entire draft class under contract,” Hurney said in a release. “We look forward to watching these young men come in and compete starting this weekend.”

The Panthers also announced they have waived LB Phillip Dillard to get to the 90-player roster limit.

Gotta love this new CBA...no more annoying holdouts.

Not only no more annoying holdouts, but no more of everyone sitting around not doing any serious negotiations until the day before training camp opens. Looking forward to seeing what the new guys can do.

This is the way the contract situation should have been set up with the draft picks some 30 years ago. In fact, we would have had salaries more under control today if this draft cap were done back then.

They whole only signing four year contracts sounds great, until we lose Newton after 4 years...

We will atleast have him 5 years. There is a team option for another year.

I think Cam's a lifer here. You're right, at the end of the day, they will tag him. You never let a franchise QB walk. The organization has shown a willingness to pay their top guys top dollar (DeAngelo, CJ, Beason, Smitty) so there's no reason to think they won't do the same with Cam. Being here isn't hurting his endorsements at all (Gatorade, UnderArmour) so that's not an excuse either.
