Panthers will leave town for Democratic convention
The Panthers will hit the road in September when the Democratic National Convention comes to Charlotte Sept. 3-6.
The Panthers plan to practice at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., prior to their regular-season opener at Tampa Bay on Sept. 9.
Barack Obama is scheduled to give his acceptance speech the evening of Sept. 6 in Bank of America Stadium. The Secret Service establishes a security perimeter for any public appearance by the president. That means extra scrutiny of vehicles and people entering the perimeter, and likely delays.
The Panthers have a history with IMG, which initially was founded as a tennis academy but has grown to include high-level instruction for athletes at varying ages in nearly every sport.
The Panthers' first-round picks each of the past two years -- QB Cam Newton and LB Luke Kuechly -- both trained at IMG under former Panthers QB Chris Weinke, who runs IMG's football division.
Ken Dorsey, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback, worked with Weinke last year before joining the Panthers as a pro scout.
If the Panthers stayed in Charlotte, players, coaches and team officials would be subjected to an array of security checks any time they entered or left the stadium or the adjacent practice fields, which are likely to be within the security perimeter.
A typical game week for the Panthers includes treatment, meetings and film study on Mondays, off days on Tuesdays, and full-scale practices on Wednesdays and Thursdays before a Friday walkthrough.
With President Obama's speech at the stadium on Thursday, that schedule would be disrupted.
Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said the team could have stayed in Charlotte, but Panthers' officials thought it would be easier to clear out of the facility.
"We could've gotten it done, for sure. But we made the decision we didn't want to inconvenience the DNC and thought it's less distractions to go and practice somewhere else," Hurney said. "We just thought it was best for both sides to do that."
Hurney said the Panthers have not finalized their travel schedule, but indicated the team would be at IMG for most of the week before playing the Bucs.

Just another Obama mess

Really PantherJon..if it was Bush the treatment would be the same thing! Get a life!

When is Jon Beason going to take offense and post about how Obama thinks he's better than them?
Posted by: Frank | May 31, 2012 1:37:55 PM
Can't blame them...I won't be around anywhere downtown that week either

If it was Bush, his ego wouldn't need the Panther Stadium.

apparently panthers avoid asses.

Panther Jon hit it on the head. Caesar Obammus and Demotards thought it would be a good idea to have the convention in Charlotte to woo the undecided into voting for him again. It won't work.
In the end, the city is going to get screwed over, there will be riots and property destruction all over the uptown area, and the home team has been displaced so that the Anointed One can feed his enormous ego.

My marxist puppet will cast a spell on the good people of Charlotte. They will vote for him regardless of his ineptitude. We can then lead the sheople into communism before they know what hit 'em! ROFL

I see just as many people hating on the acting Preside of the United States of America again just like they did Cam Newton before he got drafted to Charlotte. Birthers??really, believe me if that man was not qualified to be in the white house already with all the racial walls he had to climb just to get there and still dealing with them, he would not be in the white house. Birther, please nobody said anything about JFK's father not being born in this country did they??

LOL, didn't even make it past ONE POST before someone had to turn this to politics. Good move by the Panthers, to get away from all the distraction, so they can focus on football.
BTW - you're a crazy person if you totally support either party, in my oh-so-humble opinion.
Posted by: swizzlesticks | May 31, 2012 2:35:10 PM
Both parties are insane...our government is broken, with very little chance of it fixing itself...inmates are running the asylum

HATER HATER??? What are you talking about. Your FATHER doesn't have to be born here, YOU do.
Besides, place of birth aside, the man is:
Big Gov luver
AND he has funny ears!

Leave to the Democrats to screw up yet another situation.
Instead of the Panthers having to leave town, they should make those wishy-washy Liberals, posing as public servants, hit the road.

Sorry RedConan - The president is none of the below:
Incompetent (How? Failed at saving the auto industry, killing Bin Laden? Turning job losses into job growth? - NO)
Radical (About as Radical as Reagan - He's barely a moderate, not really a liberal and certainly not a radical)
Big Gov luver (Republicans all increase size of Gov't more than dems - do a little research)
You apparently have no idea what the next two words actually mean and are just spouting what you heard on Fox news:
I will agree that he has funny ears!

isn't the irony here that the repub convention is in Tampa so the same circus will be going on down there...

Auto industry - > 100,000 jobs were lost due to closure of many auto dealerships. Billions of taxpayer dollars will never be repaid. Sounds like a failure to me.
Bin Laden - only Bill Clinton had the ability to screw that one up. So no credit to BO for doing what should have been done when the opportunity came to pass.
Your descripton of moderate seem perplexing - BO is no moderate, he is left of left - socially and economically.
Conservatives do not say that GOP presidents shrunk government, but we do point out that BO has increased it faster than any other President. This doesn't even get into the issue of government regulations run amok.

The only irony here is that BO's ego still remains so large that he needs a stadium. Hence the Bucs will be just fine.

RedConan? so is this a mix with Red Sonja and Conan?? Anyway the birthers are claiming Obama's father was not a U.S. citizen or born in the U.S. so they question his citizenship even though his mother was a white american born citizen. I don't give a fat baby's crack really which party runs it, but it's up to the people to choose the best candidate for the job and sorry but no one stands a chance against Barack Hussein Obama with the candidates the Repubs have? Mitt seems to be a good man, but I definitely will not want him to run this country, it would be a larger mess even after Bush left Obama with all that garbage to try and clean up!

I'm so sick of this guy... Can we please get him off our sports pages..It won't be long and the NFL will be insolvent through association with him..

Oh get off the Obama hate already. I'm so tired of hearing about how he's a "radical" or a "socialist". The man has governed from the middle basically on everything. I know when people call him a socialist they bring up health reform, which of course mandates we buy insurance...FROM PRIVATE COMPANIES! That's about as far from socialism as you can get. So before you drop your medicare, social security, take your kids out of public schools and stop driving on our public roads, maybe you should learn what socialism really means.

They hated on Jesus. They hated on Ace Boogie. Why should this black man be any different. POTUS please give a rousing acceptance speech and do the "Superman" pose on the way out the door. Bump 'em if they can't take a joke!

If the Panthers lose the first the game to Tampa I am putting the blame on Obama and all you scummy liberals who wanted Charlotte turned into a freak show/traffic nightmare/anarchist&rioting scene
Posted by: No you can't | May 31, 2012 6:58:01 PM
As far as I am concerned, Barack Obama's presence in the Bank of America Stadium is a desecration of our hallowed team's home field. I was never so disappointed when I found out that the Democrass CONvention was being held there. Shame, Shame!
