Patrick Willis latest to chime in on Panthers-49ers feud

Jon Beason has always had one of the strongest voices in the Panthers' locker room.

The middle linebacker proved Friday he can make his presence felt in cyberspace, as well.

Beason ripped Alex Smith on Twitter after the San Francisco quarterback pointed to the Panthers' Cam Newton as an example of a quarterback who puts up statistics but doesn't win.

“Alex smith, don't hate on Cam (because) your stats would've gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran,” Beason wrote on Twitter. “Truth b told. That's after a 13-3 yr.”

Peyton Manning met with the 49ers this offseason before signing as a free agent with Denver.

In Jim Harbaugh's first year as head coach, the 49ers advanced to the NFC championship game despite finishing 29th in the league in passing. Newton was the NFL's Rookie of the Year and broke Manning's rookie passing record for the 6-10 Panthers.

“I could absolutely care less on yards per game,” Smith told reporters last week. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what, you're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That's great. You're not winning, though.”

San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis took to Twitter to defend Smith, posting: “Wins are Wins I stand with My Qb Alex Smith and all my teammates. I can't wait for the season.”

Unfortunately, the teams will have to wait until the 2013 season to face each other – unless they meet in the playoffs. If so, prepare for a lot of chatter – online or otherwise.

I could beat Alex Smith's butt myself and I'm disabled, so they better shut up and pray they don't meet us in the playoffs...

As a rookie, Cam Newton led his team to five more wins than they had won the year before. That's how a qb, manager in baseball, coach in football or basketball is evaluated: How many more games did you win than the year before.

From one win to six wins. Newton is off to a great start. I didn't waste my time looking up how many more games the 49ers won in Smith's rookie season because we know the answer.

Take into account how many of our (panthers) games we lost by less than one touchdown...including the packers! Way to go cam.

I don't see Alex Smith in any Under Armor or Gatorade commercials. Cam Cam is smashing all the competition.

Blame Cam Newton for the reason they want to cancel the Pro Bowl. He came in and played awful. Sorry guys, but until this guy gets his accuracy on point, he is not going to be the player we have made him out to be.

Matt Moore won as many games as Cam Newton.

Posted by: baha | May 26, 2012 11:00:27 PM

whatever man..... Matt Moore is a damn good QB, hide and watch! Foxie did not want him(Moore) too win, because it would have made him(foxie) look bad, for not moving MATT MOORE VERSUS JAKE!!!!!!!!!! SOONER!!!

Matt Moore.. let's just say this! "Parcells loved him when he brought him in", in Dallas....... So you can bet your ass he's a keeper! Foxie never gave him(moore) a chance because that is what some "fans" and Foxie wanted! Becasue he(fox) was not going tooo be wrong! For John Fox's sake! Every one but Moore got a chance. St. Pierre ring a bell!! Foxie set Moore up too fail with 1,2nd down runs and 3rd and long Downs and Moore fell for it and tried his ass of on 3rd and long to make it happen(in return made him look stupid)...... set up too FAil!!, So Fox would not look bad! By not taking JAKE out sooner to WIN, BOUND AND DETERMINED TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE MATT MOORE'S BAD PLAY!!!!!!!

THEIR YOU GO YOU EGOTISTICAL GOOBER SMOOCHING DOO DOOO HEAD JOHNNIE!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT SOME HOW MIAMI HAVE BEEN KICKING A!! WITH MOORE!~

Pantherlife, you shoul read your own post. Doesn't sound all that intelligent either. Does it?

The ranting is ridiculous but as you said anyone can say anything so it shouldn't matter to you. It certainly isn't cause enough to call people names. "idiots"? Really. You should take some time to look at yourself.

First, S.F won 6 games last year (7 counting their playoff win) by less than 7 points. Which means the ball bounced their way last year, and really those games could have gone either way.

Second, their record last year can lull them into thinking they have arrived, and they may have a rude awakening this year. We know that feeling from the Panthers going from the 2003 season (11-3, and a Superbowl appearance) to the 2004 season (7-9 record).

Is passing yards per game just a stat? yep, but if you have a good defense and can throw the ball when you want, I bet you will get many more wins than trying to eek by each game and not have a good air game... We will see what S.F does this year... It might be a downer for them....

SF were very lucky to be 13-3 they could be easily be 3-13 just look at their division they are playing Cardinals,St Louis,Seattle twice.
RAMS 2ND PICK
EAGLES 12TH PICK
CARDINALS 13TH PICK
doesnt that tell you anything?????
when we were in that division we owned them for years.something needs to change in that division

Posted by: hoaglandz | May 28, 2012 3:02:19 AM

you could tell cam didnt even try in the pro bowl…dont let some dumb pro bowl game forecast how he will play in his 2nd season, we all know he is a damn good qb

Posted by: mitchell | May 28, 2012 3:35:08 AM

I would like to see if San Fran could win 13 in the NFC South, or how many the Panthers would win in the NFC West. Wadda ya think?????

Posted by: JJ | May 28, 2012 9:55:58 AM

who cares, rnjoy newton while we can, i want to see a playoff game this year

Posted by: panthernation | May 28, 2012 10:27:25 AM

What stupid comments by Smith. I watched each game last season, and Cam NEVER padded his stastics with meaningless throws when games were out of hand. Most of his stats were generated when (1) the game was scoreless or tied, (2) the Panthers were behind, but within reach, or (3) the Panthers were sctually AHEAD. He took a team that was hiring quarterbacks off the street and looked like it could not beat anyone and made them not only respectable, but COMPETITIVE with the Packers! The record of the team -- while much better last year -- was reflective of DEFENSIVE problems, not Cam.

How Alex Smith gonna criticize on someone else rookie year. Son just got nice and still not nice thats Frank Gores offense anyway. Hate when a scrub have a good season then he wanna have an opinion. Where was your opinion when he was considered one of the worst number 1 picks ever.
