Beason makes splash in return to practice

Panthers0613_16Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason was back on the field Tuesday and back in the middle of the action.

Participating in team drills for the first time this spring following Achilles surgery last fall, Beason intercepted a Cam Newton pass during 11-on-11 work near the end of the Panthers' first minicamp practice.

Beason, who ruptured his left Achilles in Week 1 last season, was limited to individual drills and installation walk-throughs during the three weeks of organized team activities (OTAs) practices.

“It was good to see him moving around,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.

“Really, the biggest thing was just his conditioning. He was winded. He's done all the installation stuff. But he was out there. And you could see he had a little adrenaline rush going. He was all fired up to get that last extra set of reps. He (asked) out just because he was gassed.”

Beason made a nice read on his interception of Newton, who was throwing down the middle of the field.

“A natural play,” Rivera said. “Somebody else might not make that play. But I think guys with his kind of his experience and his kind of ability make that. And that's what he saw. He made a nice move on the ball and a nice play.”

While Beason returned, weakside linebacker Thomas Davis rode a stationary bike and did some leg-strengthening exercises before leaving practice early. Davis is attempting to become the first player in NFL history to return from three ACL surgeries on the same knee.

Defensive end Charles Johnson (knee), defensive tackle Ron Edwards (biceps) and offensive tackle Jeff Otah (knee) all were held out.

Undrafted wideouts Brenton Bersin and Michael Avila are both sidelined with hamstring injuries.

Jeff Otah was held out? Is this really newsworthy?

Otah should hold himself out... Of the buffet line.

Cam threw an interception. I guess the sophomore slump theory is true.

So, when is Ron Edwards supposed to be able to practice or do anything after his biceps injury? I don't know how long those take to recover from.

Quoting DAN

Cam threw an interception. I guess the sophomore slump theory is true.

~ Oh Dan I'm sure you are used to slumps, you've probably been in one since high school eneded for you.

Posted by: GREG | Jun 12, 2012 3:31:01 PM

Easy Dan. It is just an OTA and not a playoff game. Let's not speak of slumps unless he is throwing balls to the "opposing" team. I don't mind ready that he threw one in an OTA to an All Pro linebacker. Learn from that play and move on...you do the same.

Calm down guys. Just kidding. Geez.

Jeff Otah is that guy who's dream was always to MAKE it to the NFL and not to PLAY in the NFL........

Posted by: Smitty | Jun 12, 2012 3:56:31 PM

@ Dan

I knew you were kidding dude, good joke....people are touchy over Cam Newton.

Beason intercepted Newton! He's 100% Back! Didn'y you hear?! He made a sweeeeet play!

All seriousness.... So excited for the season to staret. We have alot of talent and should go 10 - 6, winning the wildcard and then make it to the NFC champ gm

Wow - are Ron Edwards and Jeff Otah ever going to play another game? Why did we cut Shirley for a WR that likely won't make the team when Edwards is damaged? I assume there is something i don't know related to Jason Shirley - perhaps he showed up at 400 lbs or something.

Who was the Top-tier QB who threw an INT last week to a sportscaster? I don't remember who, but remember it being shown on SportsCenter or something. Now, THAT one was pretty funny!

If McClain, Fua, Bell and ALL the defensive backs from last year aren't replaced.... the Panthers will not win 8 games. If they are ALL replaced. the Panthers will be in the playoffs.

Dude gambles numbers are not bad look up your stats.. It's hard to look good when the guy across from you is ranked last as a cb..Go Panthers!!!

Coach Rivera, I am sure I speak for a LOT of the Panther's Fans when I say this.

We are all behind you, cant wait for the season to start, and don't screw it up ;-)

We DO wish you the best of luck this year!

Rivera screwed up and single handedly blew 2 games last year. Good bet to repeat that this season.
As for Edwards, why is everyone really thinking this guy is the Second Coming or some defensive savior? He was a guy they picked up off the scrap heap after he got cut last offseason and no one else wanted him. Would suggest lowering expectations by A LOT.

hey Joe, good job and everything with the write up, but can we get a progress update on David Gettis? He's actually one of the most important players who was injured last year...

Posted by: Jason Alston | Jun 13, 2012 5:43:53 PM

Please go ahead and let Otah go. Enough is enough. The Panthers have typically nursed along some players way too long.
