What addition of Murphy means for other WRs

Still waiting for official word on what the Panthers gave up for disgruntled Oakland WR Louis Murphy, but guessing it was a draft pick – and not a very high one.

The Raiders wanted to move Murphy, so they lacked leverage.

Murphy, who played with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton at Florida, caught 90 passes in three seasons with the Raiders, but just 15 in 11 games last year.

The addition of Murphy gives the Panthers depth at a position where No. 3 wideout David Gettis is coming off ACL surgery and didn't do much during OTAs and minicamp.

Even with the acquisition, Brandon LaFell's standing as the No. 2 receiver is safe.

But Armanti Edwards' roster spot in his third season? Not so much.

Mmmhhh.

What I like about this move, is that it shows a commitment of the Panthers organization to have vertical threats for Cam Newton.

Not sure how well it's going to work out. But you hope, that Lafell, Smith, Murphy, Gettis and Adams, can provide the possession and deep threats for Cam and the Panthers to rack up the passing yards.

I like this because the Panthers, despite a good offense last year, are trying to get better. Now if the defense can just stay healthy...

That is an interesting pick up. I will never understand their handling of Armanti Edwards though. They draft a guy they know - and admit they know - will be a project. That guy is ignored by John Fox, then has no real offseason, with a new offense, in his second season - none of which is condusive to learning a new position. And now it looks like they are ready to give up on him? Makes it look like they never really had much of a plan for him, which makes them look kind of clueless...

swizzle,

You don't think a pro team knows if armanti is good or not if they are working full time with him all the time? he's just not that good, and they know it.

When will App St. fans admit that that league is J.V.

Didn't know Cam Newton played at Florida.

Rumor I heard was that Gettis was what the Raiders were getting in the deal. Of course that makes absolutely no sense, trading an unproven WR coming off injury whose only real asset is that he's really fast for an unproven WR whose only real asset is that he's really fast.

I like the pick up. I like it even more because I know we'll probably get rid of the most worthless receiver in Panthers history, Armanti Edwards.

Posted by: Ron Jeremy | Jul 23, 2012 4:03:48 PM

Edwards was never a receiver from the beginning...but too bad for him. I think this is a good pick up! Cam's needs as many options he can get to pass the ball too.

I read that the Panthers gave up a 5th round 2013 draft pick for Murphy.

The move may be great for the Panthers, but it will spell the end of Edwards' time here. As for the "JV" reference to the FCS players...I am sure Tony Romo and T.O. and Randy Moss and Chad Pennington and DJ Smith and Jason Hunter and Corey Lynch and Dexter Coakley...etc.etc.etc all agree with you.

The Panthers screwed up because they drafted Armanti too high and had a coach that refused to ever give the guy a shot. Had he been a 4th or 5th round project, no one would have said a word. That was the mistake that Hurney made. I would not be shocked to see Armanti catch on with a team like New England that will bring him in and incorporate him into the scheme. Carolina is just a ship that has sailed.

Thank God "The App State Project" is finally going to be over. Definitely a top 5 worst pick in Panthers History

AE will have the last laugh! Super Bowl Champs 2013. GO PANTHERS!!!

This certainly creates competition among the receivers which can only be good for the offense. Last year, the Panthers had to rely too often on Cam to win with his legs. I'd like to see him take less hits in the open field this year.

He played behind tebow !

Slim shady, Do you honestly think that pro teams don't make mistakes in this regard? There are tons of players out there who were afterthoughts on their first team, and went on to be viable players, even stars. Priest Holmes comes to mind immediately. If you think I'm saying Edwards is good enough to start, I'm not. I'm not saying anything of the sort.

I'm saying that if they aren't even willing to give him - a known project player - a full offseason and season of instruction before they cut him, then they never should have drafted him in the first place.

JEFF OTAH SENT TO JETS
idk what for yet

Just what the panthers need, another receiver, are we nuts? We have a full stable of excellent young receivers already , every one trained up in the panther way.. This is stupid , but remarkably consistent with Marty Hurney's methods ... Why not a capable League proven Defensive back? Maybe a defensive tackle ?? Unbelievable !!!
