Cam Newton will play first quarter vs. Texans

SPARTANBURG

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he expects quarterback Cam Newton to play the first quarter in Saturday's exhibition opener against Houston before turning it over to backups Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen.

Newton, last year's AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, is trying to build on a season in which he broke Peyton Manning's rookie passing record and energized the Panthers' fan base with his strong arm and long runs.

Rivera said Newton and most of the starters would be in for the first quarter before the reserves take over.

Starting linebacker Jon Beason and Thomas Davis, both coming off season-ending surgeries in 2011, will miss the Texans' game. Beason has a pulled hamstring, while Davis has a strained calf.

Rivera expects both to be ready next week.

In other news, the Panthers:

--Reached an injury settlement with offensive tackle Lee Ziemba, who is scheduled for knee surgery next week. Ziemba, a second-year player from Auburn, injured his knee when a teammate rolled up on it last week.

--Signed offensive lineman Andre Ramsey, who participated in their rookie/tryout camp in May.

--Broke practice by having cornerback Captain Munnerlyn attempt a 12-yard field goal with the night's meetings on the line. Munnerlyn, who had three chances to make it, missed badly on the first attempt with his old-school, straight-on approach.

He sneaked the second attempt inside the right upright, prompting a celebration from teammates who were free to head back to Charlotte with a night off before tomorrow's exhibition vs. Houston.

So was Ziemba released or still under contract? He was terrific in college, hope he remains w the Panthers and is back next year.

Go Panthers!!! As fans, we need to show more support and faith at games. That means buy tickets, and don't allow opposing fans to dominate our stadium. When our defense is on the field be LOUD, not just on third downs (be loud every damn down), and for the love of god shut up when our offense is on the field. Don't leave the game early if our team is down, because they might make a comeback and could use our help by making noise. You paid for the ticket, might as well enjoy the entire game. As fans, lets do our part to support the team 100%. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!
