Newton to play first half vs. Miami

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the plan is to play quarterback Cam Newton and the other starters for the first half Friday in the second exhibition game against Miami.

Newton, last year's Rookie of the Year, was 2-of-6 for 17 yards in three series last week in a 26-13 loss to Houston. Newton was in for 13 snaps, producing a field goal in the three drives.

Rivera said the goal would be to double the snaps for the starters against the Dolphins.

“Ideally, 25 plays would be perfect,” Rivera said.

Rivera said the following players are out: linebackers Thomas Davis (calf), Jon Beason (hamstring) and David Nixon (elbow), defensive tackle Andre Neblett (medical condition), offensive lineman Roger Allen (foot) and running back Tauren Poole (post-concussion).

Defensive end Eric Norwood, who injured his knee last week, will play. Rivera said an MRI on Norwood's knee revealed a slight strain.

Tight end Nelson Rosario (head injury) will be a game-time decision.

that's right...i'm da answer!

Obviously Chuckels has a magic crystal ball. So if Cam's not the answer, who is? And if your magic crystal ball actually worked, shouldn't you be collecting your powerball money today?

YOu all are jealous. Cam is the man and in 2 to 3 years will be noted as the Best QB in the NFC South if not NFC. Period.

I agree with Chuckles...I'm the answer.

Not the answer? You are Michael Proctor I presume?

Vegas has the Panthers at 6 wins this year. If all you know-it-alls think this team is playoff bound, then go make a wager. They would love your donation!

He won't they'll pull him early. They are just trying to get a good crowd out there.

What's the question?

Posted by: Gamera | Aug 16, 2012 1:03:21 PM

Panthers will be NFC South Champs at 10-6. Losses will be to Ain'ts, Broncos, Eagles, Falcons, Chargers, and Bears...Yes, we beat the G-Men, Cowgirls, Seahawks, etc...Cam makes his 2nd Pro Bowl...Holla!

I am all in this Season...#gopanthers

Posted by: Benjamin Bear | Aug 16, 2012 1:36:21 PM

Well they need to play the entire half b/c last week they look like SH@#$#T!!!!

Posted by: big daddy | Aug 16, 2012 1:39:14 PM

I thought for sure that this team would be an improvement over last year's. But they have done NOTHING to address the problems. I am afraid they will be very lucky to win half their games. The Brees's and Mannings of this league will destroy the secondary, and the pathetic pass rush (or lack of) will mean the D-backs will have to cover for 6+ seconds. The Panthers could see 500+ yard games from the opposing teams as the norm. Hard times ahead Panther fans, hard times.

Saying Eric Norwood will "play" is inaccurate. He may be on the field, but he is yet another Marty Hurney bust who has never done anything. hopefully between him and CRAPtain Munnerlyn hurney has learned his lesson when it comes to drafting Gamecocks but doubt it. They've never worked out here, maybe other places but not here.

Wow reading some of these comments you would think this was a falcon website. I remember last year during the preseason, people said Cam was going to suck and we would be lucky to win 2 games. I even heard talk of us trying to get Andrew Luck? Wow! There seems to be way to many haters(Jealous) people on the CHARLOTTE observer website

First of all, anyone crapping on Newton is not doing it based on his play. His sophomore year will be a test, but Cam is the real deal. As long as he stays focused and doesn't veer into celebrity distraction he will be a franchise QB. The real issues are with production by the defense, particularly the pass rush and secondary. Decisions made to invest BIG $$ in Johnson must get an equal return in production. Unless this line gets push & penetration, the D will not succeed. It's early, and guys are not healthy, so let's give them time to work through everything. And to the Giant's loudmouth...focus on your own personal performance, as your lady wishes you were close to half the man Cam is ;^).

Anyone else here think that Deangelo needs to cut his dreads? Those things looks terrible. Looks like he hasn't washed them since last year. I dont understand why people think that dreads look cool when they get that long. 6 to 7 inches long at the max.

G-Men/Saints/Falcons/Cowboys will all have down years...none of them will reach 10 wins...Bawhahahahahaha

Posted by: Mike Curry | Aug 16, 2012 2:16:00 PM

he can't play the 2nd half, he has a GQ Cover shoot.

Posted by: big gulps | Aug 16, 2012 2:21:08 PM

Davis and Beason might as well play and get hurt now as opposed to doing so in a few weeks so that they can start "healing for next year" earlier. Time to scrap some of these used goods.

This white guy is getting SOOOO tired of the racist idiots who keep bashing Cam! If you weren't impressed by his performance last season, then in the words of a local sports talk personality... you lost all credibility in your comments!

Posted by: John | Aug 16, 2012 2:48:59 PM

Newton is OK but I wish we could have got Luck.

Posted by: Tony | Aug 16, 2012 3:19:16 PM

Cam is the MAN! Haters gonna hate...remember locals, we have a bunch of other fans bashing the Panthers since they moved from up North where they could not afford to live. Don't blame them though...NY, NJ, and PA are dirty...Just sayin'
