Panthers lead Jets 10-9 at halftime

A late touchdown by the Carolina Panthers gave the visitors the lead heading into halftime at MetLife Stadium.

The Panthers lead the New York Jets 10-9 after the first half of action Sunday night.

Cam Newton hit Louis Murphy for a 3-yard touchdown with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter for the first touchdown of the game. The Panthers had scored on their first drive of the game with 33-yard field goal by Olindo Mare.

The Jets have yet to score a touchdown this preseason. New York scored three field goals after the Panthers stopped the home team twice in the red zone.

Linebacker Thomas Davis made his return to action Sunday night. In his second play of the game, Davis sacked Mark Sanchez for an eight-yard loss on third down. Davis, who is returning from his third reconstructive knee surgery, has been used on special teams and third-down plays only this half.

Running backs Mike Tolbert and Jonathan Stewart were both sidelined late in the half. Tolbert was limping off the field with ice on his right knee while Stewart was carted off the field with what appeared on replays to be a rolled right ankle.

Carolina's offensive starters have been in 35 plays, which was the low end of what head coach Ron Rivera expected. He said earlier in the week the starters could see time in the third quarter with as many as 46 total plays.

Keuchly is a beast. He's in on every play it seems.

Man I know, Keuchly is a machine out there, such a great pick. By far seeing Thomas Davis back out there and making plays has been the most exciting. Really hope Stew's injury isnt serious.

The only improvement on this team is Luke Keuchly, Newton is not rookie, and getting those injured player from last year.Still need help at DE,DT,WR and CB.I still see weaknes in these positions. From watching this preseason game vs Jets Steve Smith is missed badly,no one to throw to except Greg Olsen.I still cant believe Munnerlyn will be our starting CB.Dude holds a lot! Dont play football if you cant cover man...

Agree with comment about Munnerlyn. He's awful. He's so bad he actually makes Gamble look good. Panthers need some real NFL CB's. But Kuechley is the man. Looks like he should probably be in the middle and move Beason outside if/when he ever gets back.

SodaPop.....You're kidding, Right. Two things. One we were without Smitty, two and more importantly... ONE WORD.. VANILLA. Rewind to last pre-season. We didn't look good at all. Very Vanilla. Ron Rivera said Newton was the starter from the 1st preseason game. Yet it appeared Newton was struggling. Relax Preseason. Our defense looks good and Kept the NYJ out of the endzone.

it's hilarious to me that Jonathan Jones (who?) continues to only work for 1/2 of these games.

will that trend continue into the regular season?

the stellar coverage at the Charlotte Observer never ceases to amaze me. stinks we have to go to national outlets to get complete info on our team.
