Panthers release first depth chart of the preseason

SPARTANBURG

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers released their depth chart for the first time in the 2012 season and it held a few surprises.

First-round draft pick Luke Kuechly is not listed as a projected starter for Saturday's game against the Texans in Bank of America Stadium. Instead, the ACC's all-time leader in tackles is listed behind the eight-year veteran Thomas Davis at weakside linebacker.

Davis, who is recovering from a strained calf in the same leg on which he had three knee reconstructions, is listed as the starter. But Davis has not participated in pads with the team during training camp.

The lone rookie listed as a started is left guard Amini Silatolu, just ahead of the combo guard-center Jeff Byers

In the secondary, Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn are projected to start and will be backed up by Darius Butler and R.J. Stanford. Charles Godfrey is listed in front of Jonathan Nelson at strong safety and Sherrod Martin is in front of newly acquired Haruki Nakamura at free safety.

Brandon LaFell holds the No. 2 WR position after having a solid training camp thus far. He and Steve Smith will be immediately backed up by  David Gettis, Seyi Ajirotutu and Armanti Edwards.

On special teams, 16-year veteran Olindo Mare gets the nod on the depth chart over Justin Medlock despite Medlock running with the first team at Tuesday's practice. Mare started last season, but Medlock has shown this training camp to have a longer leg.

Edwards and Kealoha Pilares look to be the main options for the return teams. Pilares is listed first and kickoff while Edwards is first on punt returns.

I would have thought Thomas Keiser'd be good for a top-six DE spot...even Van Bergen is ahead of him.

Where is Adams as the return man? Edwards over him?

Cool.. Something I can line my birdcage with! Seriously, there will be changes before the game checks start coming.

This depth chart is flat off horrible.
-First off, Kuechly is about to be the new starting weakside LB so the Panthers can use some more "getting used to" by starting him over Davis.
-Second, is Norman and Hogan THIRD team? The two guys who are competing for the starting CB spot opposite of Gamble.
-Third, did Louis Murphy die or something? Cause I dont see his name anywhere.
-4th, just like Kuechly, Adams is clear to be the #1 PR, so you mind as well start him now. THATS WHY WE DRAFTED HIM. We dont wanna see Edwards muff a punt and turn the ball over.

Have y'all never watched preseason football? Geez. They do the depth chart like this bc the starters don't play muchn Kuechly, Hogan, etc. will get much more playing time this way.

Simmer down.

This will not be the season opening list. Some of the guys that posters have mentioned have been hampered by injury. This is just for
pre-season game #1. Stay calm guys.

Adams is the #1 PR...wps

maybe we will get lucky & that worthless kicker mare will miss one early so we can get rid of him....he is a huge choker...I can also see edwards fumbling so we can get rid of him...will not take long for martin to blow a coverage either....lets get these last year marty hurney losers in there early so they can screw up & we can move on without them

Edwards didn't muff any punts last season. His "muffs" came in 2010 pre-season. While he certainly didn't excel in the return game he's considered the safe option as he has NFL game experience there unlike Adams who they're probably gonna ease into the position as he certainly has more ability to break long ones.

Geez, you guys get your panties in a wad so easy. This is the first depth chart. It causes competition. You see your name down from the top row, you work harder to get to #1. Makes the rookies hungry, and see who can handle the pressure or choke under it. You want to find that out now, not in the regular season. Makes total sense to me.
Personally, the only way A Edwards makes the team is a really good Punt Return Average. But he looked good in camp last year, then crickets in the regular season. Opposite of Delhomme, who sucked during practice but come game time he showed up.(I know, some would say he sucked then too, still...he did take us to the Super Bowl)

First of all, I see more that the incumbents will start pre-season Kuechly and the other rookies will move into their earned spots later in the pre-season. Kuechly is probably the only one to have truthfully EARNED the starting role but it is pre-season and VETS do have squatters rights. RELAX everyone. God I hope we don't lose the pre-season game. All the CAM haters will come out in force.

Go Panthers!!! As fans, we need to show more support and faith at games. That means buy tickets, and don't allow opposing fans to dominate our stadium. When our defense is on the field be LOUD, not just on third downs (be loud every damn down), and for the love of god shut up when our offense is on the field. Don't leave the game early if our team is down, because they might make a comeback and could use our help by making noise. You paid for the ticket, might as well enjoy the entire game. As fans, lets do our part to support the team 100%. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!
