Rivera rips team for questionable effort

SPARATANBURG

Panthers coach Ron Rivera is a soft-spoken guy who seldom raises his voice when addressing his team or his staff.

Not Wednesday.

About an hour into the Panthers' practice, Rivera stopped the drills, gathered his players around him and lit into them for a lack of effort.

The Panthers were in shorts and shoulder pads, and Rivera thought some of his players were going through the motions.

"I wanted to make sure people understand the way you've got to practice. We're starting to back off now looking to game time. ... I wanted to make the point that a lot of opportunities are being passed up by not practicing hard," Rivera said afterward.

"Just because we back down doesn't mean we don't practice hard. We don't want the big collisions because we're not in full pads. But to do what we did for two periods and basically waste that time, that was disappointing."

Rivera said he was speaking to veterans and young players. But he wanted the young guys to know that last year the Panthers used 17 extra players because of injuries, and many of them were signed off the practice squad.

Rivera thought the tempo improved after his talk. There was no punitive running after the practice.

A couple of other quick hits from practice:

--WR Steve Smith sat out after bruising his knee Tuesday. It's not considered a serious injury.

--RB DeAngelo Williams was back at practice after missing Tuesday to attend a funeral.

--The Panthers have signed offensive lineman Justin Wells, who took part in their rookie camp during the spring. With second-year tackle Lee Ziemba out indefinitely with a knee injury, the team needed another linemen.

To make room on the roster for Wells, the Panthers waived/injured undrafted WR Hubert Anyiam, who has been out with a hamstring issue.

The Charlotte John blog is has Panthers crushing TB in week 1 (likely a tight spread) about -3

i wonder if the super bowl champion NY Giants had to get cussed out by the head coach for lack of effort today at practice

@dar456 - Tom Coughlin would have to wipe the drool off his chin, before he could yell. Since he is 65 going on 75 years old..Giants won't even make it out of the cellar of the NFC East this year.

If things aint looking so hot already and Rivera is yelling and hollering, this can't be good. I hope the defense holds up this season, whew!!!

Guys relax, this is a good thing. Rivera is just showing his grip on the team and keeping everything together. Rivera is a good coach.

:(

Well, what are you doing eating Hardee's hot dogs anyway? Everyone knows this is a Bojangles chicken team.

Again with the professional GM wannabees who think they know everything!!

problem with armantie is that while he might have a great camp he stinks in real games.

Wow! Some of you must have never played Football in life! Coach yelling and hollering does not mean jack! The nature of the Panthers have to change and half doing in practice is not what the coach wanted and demanded that they practice like champs and that will translate on Sundays! So all you half doing Panther fans go pull for Tampa! Way to go Coach!!

Well I walked 6 miles in the AM and thought it was hot as hell. Checked the weather it was only 86 but 50% humidity. Real Feel was 100. But glad to see Coach getting on the team lack of effort can bring the team down.

Good for Coach Rivera. He needs to make sure this team knows he means business. They are young in many areas and need a kick in the pants to keep them on their toes.

Go Panthers!!! As fans, we need to show more support and faith at games. That means buy tickets, and don't allow opposing fans to dominate our stadium. When our defense is on the field be LOUD, not just on third downs (be loud every damn down), and for the love of god shut up when our offense is on the field. Don't leave the game early if our team is down, because they might make a comeback and could use our help by making noise. You paid for the ticket, might as well enjoy the entire game. As fans, lets do our part to support the team 100%. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!

You tell 'em, coach! Tell them to get their heads out of their asses and straighten up! We're not putting up with any more 6-10 seasons around here. No more half-ass effort in Carolina! Make 'em run gassers until their balls fall off!

This Panthers team has had it too soft for too long...bust their butts, coach!

it is what it is!

I'm not a professional athlete, but I have played football. A hard and tough practice is the BEST simulation for a game. Finally, a coach that cares about winning, and holds players accountable. Anyone who wants to win "is not" a negative person.

just seems odd to me that 2 weeks ago our starting center takes out a full page ad laying claim to a super bowl title and describing this new found sense of urgency and intensity then when it comes time to go to work coach isnt happy with the effort. anybody can guarantee a super bowl victory in august to get some buzz started, but then hearing that the team is looking lazy in camp is a slap to every fans face. hopeully RR got them in check and refocused qucikly. full page ads arent going to do us any good against the packers in the playoffs. at that point, its going to come down to whose put in the most work and who wants it more.
