Rivera says Panthers ahead of schedule in camp

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said today he feels like his team is ahead of schedule as it completes its first week of training camp.

There's still work to be done, however.

Rivera mentioned defensive end Charles Johnson as a player who can do more.

"Charles Johnson is very consistent right now but we need him to take it to another level. He's doing the things we want him to do but we want him to do more. That's why we have him here," Rivera said.

Rivera pointed out how impressive former South Carolina star Eric Norwood has been in camp as well as rookie defensive linemen Frank Alexander and Nate Chandler.

He also said receiver Armanti Edwards is having "an outstanding camp."

Rivera said the battle for punter and kicker are close and will be determined by how each player does in preseason games. He emphasized it's an open competition at both spot and no player has a particular advantage at this point.

The Panthers will have a full practice in pads tonight then back off on Friday before FanFest at Bank of America Stadium Saturday at 4 p.m. Rivera said the Panthers will treat the Saturday session like a normal practice, doing a variety of things including team drills with the offense going against the defense.

What's the word on Greg Hardy? Also, updates on the secondary...as a unit as well as individual standouts!

I agree with coach that Charles can definitely play better, do more then what he did last season! Paying him too much money to not go hard every play.

Also whats the status of Shockey???? Is he offically cut from the team or are we bringing him back??? Hope we bring him back..........

Finally! Armanti gets some props from RR! He has been the most impressive receiver in camp and deserves credit for his bar work. Thanks Coach!

Shockey wasn't cut, his contract was up and he still hasn't signed anywhere. After his comments about the commissioner last week, it's doubtful he will.

Don't know about you guys but Im getting really STOKED about this season

I'm sticking with my prediction from two years ago: AE will NOT be on any 53-man roster after training camp final cuts. What a waste of a second round pick.

What's the love affair with Shockey? He's usually a good guy for a year, then starts to run his mouth. Ala, Terell Owens. We can be just fine without him. If we didn't have Olsen, then I could see wanting to bring him back.

If it's down to AE and one of the others that were recently brought in, and all things are equal, why would you expect them to cut AE? It makes sense to keep him in that scenario precisely because of the investment of draft picks.

@DT....No love affair with Shocky though I do like the dude dating back to his days as a Giant. Just wanted to know a status

@BlakCatFan ....Thanks for the update! And you right the comment about the commissioner Im sure wont sit well with Richardson anyway!!!

AE if he shows he can catch in the preseason offers a cheap back up at multiple positions. PR QB and WR. Who better to run Cams offsense that a QB that understands it?

Posted by: BigDave | Aug 2, 2012 4:18:26 PM

better he than jimmy.

The problem is AE often looks good in camp. He made some good catches in camp last year. But he hasn't shown it in games. He really needs to be explosive and make some plays in the pre-season for him to stick. I mean several impressive plays. He has got to show he can produce or he has to go. I think they screwed him from the start. I think he would have beat out Clausen. But that's water under the bridge.

I think Armanti is still the best QB on the Panthers roster.

AE hasnt made any catches in games because he hasn't been in any freakin games! Stop with that argument!

Posted by: Eman | Aug 2, 2012 5:09:49 PM

BTW, if you mean pre-season games, AE led the Panthers in receiving yards last preseason...

Go Panthers!!! As fans, we need to show more support and faith at games. That means buy tickets, and don't allow opposing fans to dominate our stadium. When our defense is on the field be LOUD, not just on third downs (be loud every damn down), and for the love of god shut up when our offense is on the field. Don't leave the game early if our team is down, because they might make a comeback and could use our help by making noise. You paid for the ticket, might as well enjoy the entire game. As fans, lets do our part to support the team 100%. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!

Just booked my rooms for all the home games so I can tailgate and stay late after the wins. Cant wait to roll up to CHA from ATL esp when we play Drew Greeds and his gang of thugs.

Armani Edwards has drastically improved and is standing out at camp. Lets let this project run its course. I am also very STOKED for this season!
