Updated: Thomas Davis has strained calf, knee OK

Clarification: Panthers coach Ron Rivera says Thomas Davis has a strained calf muscle, but his surgically-repaired knee is fine.

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis remains sidelined with a strained calf and knee, but coach Ron Rivera said an MRI on Davis' knee looked "great."

Davis, attempting to come back from three ACL surgeries on his right knee, met with the team's doctors Thursday.

“That was a very positive meeting. He has a little bit of strain in his calf and on the knee that was repaired,” Rivera said Friday. “So the whole approach will be to be careful with him and we'll evaluate him as we get into next week.”

Davis has not practiced since tweaking his leg Sunday. He said earlier this week his knee was fine, and the MRI apparently confirmed that.

“That (MRI) turned out to be just great,” Rivera said. “We're really relieved that it's just one of those things that's kind of cause and effect. Now it's just a matter of him getting back on the field.”

Rivera said receiver David Gettis, who is on the physically unable to perform list following ACL surgery last summer, is running full speed. Rivera did not give a timetable for Gettis' return.

he's not human, he's like a piece of iron

Thomas Davis cannot be killed by conventional weapons. He might look like robocop by the time his career is over.

cut davis ..re-sign kasay

No way he plays the full season or even half. He reminds me of Dan Morgan. Great football player, but injury prone. Not his fault. I wish he could get healthy, but like Otah the Panthers have to move on, and I think they have with drafting Luke Skywalker!

cut cam...re-sign delhomme

I hope this is not a preview of how the season with TD is going to go! If so lets cut our ties early and move on. But I wish him the best on a full recovery.

Duuuuhhhhhh.....did someone say they wanted to sign Dan Morgan? This make Dan Morgan happy. You want me tackle when whistle blow?

Don't underestimate a knee that came back from the dead. Just say "TD Knee" 3 times and you will see what I'm talkin about. I'm a ghost with the most, babe.

It's showtime

Thomas, I am so sad to hear of your recent demise.... as is being written by those who "know it all". Know everything there is.....except maybe perhaps nothing about courage and heart.

Keep it iced and swim a lot TD. Constantly do that at least twice a day. It's still 5 and a half weeks before the opener and we'll be fine until you are 100% but we will need you toward the middle of the season and the post season as well. Stay healthy Thomas and don't rush it.

Somewhere in the world Dan Morgan just had another concussion.

Cut this clown NOW! Move on...send him to whodatnation just like we did Dan Morgan...Saints will stink this year. Washed up like a hurricane...Holla!

Thats the thing...it doesnt have to be knee anymore. His entire leg will be affected by the surgeries as more pressure will be placed on the lower part of the leg.

Man...I hate it for TD! Such a good guy and helluva player when healthy.

I love the Morgan and Davis comparisons - although Dan's issues were concussions. Two GREAT Players who just could not stay on the field. I think both of those guys could have had amazing careers - Morgan would be a HOF candidate if he could have stopped tackling with his head. Davis would have had some pro-bowl seasons if his knee would have held up - but both can still be proud of what they were able to do and both made a ton of money. Morgan has the Super Bowl record for tackles...

Good to know the fickle parts of our fanbase are alive and well, keeping up the stupid portions of the comments on here.

Real fans would neither wish for nor cheer the cutting of Thomas Davis.

I hate it, but he won't play in more than a couple games this year at best. The guy is a great player, but fragile.

I applaud him for trying to overcome the impossible, but at a point, being able to walk is more important than playing a year or less of football.

thats what happens when you draft tweeners.when he gained all that weight to become a l.b his legs couldnt handle it.stop drafting tweeners, see norwood,a.e.

i know this is off topic but ive been hearing only good things about medlocke. why dont we keep both until we are sure medlocke is the real deal.we can always cut one of them at anytime during the year.what bothers me about mare is not so much his choking but he also kicks the ball low and under 47 yards hes a crap shoot.

Posted by: dazray | Aug 3, 2012 3:22:33 PM

So they were lying when they said it wasn't a knee problem....now they are lying when they say it is a minor knee and calf problem. This guy was a great athlete..and it is sad that he had such a short career. They were smart to draft Luke K.

Little mikey curry has no limit to his stupid ass remarks.

Thomas Davis won't be on the roster after the 1st game of season. Sad...but true. I like him as football player, but too injury prone. Hopefully, he'll prove me wrong!
