LB Davis to play Sunday vs. Jets, Smith and Beason out

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said linebacker Thomas Davis will play Sunday night against the New York Jets.

Davis has been hampered by a strained calf while recovering from a third reconstructive knee surgery, but the linebacker has seen time on the practice field this week.

Wide receiver Steve Smith, who at some point during the weekend suffered a foot infection, will not play Sunday. Rivera said if this were the regular season, Smith would officially be ruled as "out."

Smith was still on crutches Friday after first being seen on them Wednesday after a doctor's visit. He's been on antibiotics and the team is monitoring the swelling.

Linebacker Jon Beason will also not play while he continues to nurse a hamstring injury.

Defensive tackle Andre Neblett has been out for nearly two weeks with an undisclosed illness. On Friday, Rivera said he had recently been told that Neblett had suffered from hypertension, stress and fatigue. There's no definite timetable on his return--he's suspended the first four games of the season anyway--but Rivera said he expects him back "soon."

TD, we are all rooting for you. I dont care if you dont even like the panthers, you have to root for this man. So many would have thrown in the towel and sat home with a fat bank account. Good luck!

"I'm just in total shock that Beason is still out. He's been such a hard worker since he signed his lucrative contract, staying healthy, starting games, and really performing up to his pay on the field."

Freddie, if this were anything but a preseason game I'd agree with you.

Freddie, you are such a troll. Beason will start the season opener and record double digit tackles along with a turnover against Tampa. Mark it, know it, believe it. Said ME

Freddie: If nobody ever said that, there is no need for quotation marks. Maybe you should try to complete elementary school. Unless they don't let you attend school down in the park...

Godwin, start getting nervous when he's sitting out against Tampa.

A hamstring that takes 4 weeks or more to heal is cause for alarm. I said the same thing last year about Beason's achilles. When he hurt the hamstring it was called a 'tweak'. Tweaks don't take a month off to get better. Something much more serious is going on.

Really hope TD can get through this game. I would love to see him get through the season. Best to ya buddy. Love that you're a Panther!

Folly-Well considering Arian Foster was out for 3-4 weeks last year with a hamstring injury, I think it's understandable. Especially since we're talking pre-season and not reg season. Some of you guys need to get a grip with the conspiracies. It's football, not the US gov't.

I got a feeling TD is gonna blow that knee out. i hope to get my hands on a piece of the meniscus shrapnel that comes out when it blows out all the way this time, add that to my unique collection of panther memorabilia.

PANTHERS will regret not signing WR plaxico burress

Carolina Panthers are going to embarrass the Jets. However we better not let their special teams embarrass us. GO PANTHERS!!!

FutureGreatNFLQB. Teblow is that you? Shouldn't you be out practicing so you show Boomer you really aren't the worst QB ever to put a uniform on. Beason is out because we want NY to continue with the Teblow love affair. If Beason played you would look more like a christmas tree than a football player cause Beason would light you up. Teblow before you come on our page how about learning to throw a football. My 5 year old nephew his more accurate than you.

Tebow benching 600??? With 2 spotters?
Yeah not in my gym, maybe in his head and yours...

An "athlete" to bench over 400 is.. wow!
If you are not saavy to lifting than yes seems possible. This is how these rumors get started!

Even if Beason plays vs. Tampa, he won't and shouldn't start. He's quikcly gone from best LB on the team to 4th best. I don't know that he can even hang with Thomas Davis now.

Byron Bell is terrible!
