Veterans rest at practice on Tuesday

Several veterans on the Carolina Panthers sat out of practice Tuesday for various reasons as the team prepares for the final game of the preseason.

Wide receiver Steve Smith continues to nurse a foot infection that has sidelined him for more than a week. He was still on crutches Tuesday but head coach Ron Rivera said his receiver was "much better." Running back Jonathan Stewart is day-to-day with an ankle sprain, which was not a high ankle sprain. He will not play Thursday against Pittsburgh.

Also, fullback Mike Tolbert, who took a hit to his quad Sunday against the New York Jets on Sunday, was not on the practice field Tuesday.

Among the other players not participating were LB Jon Beason (hamstring) and Andre Neblett (fatigue). Both offensive tackle Jordan Gross and tight end Greg Olsen had the day off. So, too, did center Ryan Kalil, whose family welcomed a newborn girl this weekend.

The Panthers will practice Wednesday morning before leaving for Pittsburgh. Rivera said he and his staff will decide tonight on how to divide up playing time Thursday.

I would've rather kept Josh Vaughn over Armanti Edwards

That's why you aren't a coach

Vaughan is a running back, Edwards is a wide receiver.

Armanti could be on the bubble with the signing of Louis Murphy. Edwards might make the team because Gettis is on the PUP and cannot return for about 2 months.

Beason was given the day off to rest?? HILARIOUS! He's been resting ever since he signed his lucrative contract. They really should just go ahead and put him on the PUP list...Paid Unwilling to Perform.

Armanti is only on this team because Hurney is not ready to accept his epic failure in trading away basically a first round draft pick to take this clown. If Edwards ever does get cut, he's out of the league. Just like Everette Brown. No other GM is dumb enough to sign him.
