Comparing RG3 and Cam Newton

They're fast, they're dynamic and they can both make plays with their arm and legs. But how similar are Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton as quarterbacks?

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was asked that question Thursday at his press conference. The previous day, Rivera had noted the athleticism shared between the Washington Redskins' quarterback and Newton.

Newton and Griffin will long be compared because both were selected in the top two in back-to-back drafts (Cam was No. 1 in 2011, RG3 was No. 2 this year), and both were Heisman Trophy winners. Rivera went into more detail about the similarities and differences between the two on Thursday.

"I think their styles are similar only to certain degrees, certain aspects of the game," Rivera said. "I think after that it’s a lot more different. They get RG3 more on the edges, they get him outside the pocket a lot more. RG3 makes a lot more throws behind the line of scrimmage than we do. We attack a little bit more vertically as opposed to throwing the ball sideways. And our quarterback stays more in the pocket. I think those are some of the philosophical differences between our coordinator and their coordinator.

"I think their skill sets are similar to the degree that they both have good arms, they’re very athletic and they both run very well. The difference obviously being the physical difference. Our guy is 6-5 and he’s 6-2. There’s that difference and about 40 pounds."

Other notes: Wide receiver Steve Smith was still wearing a brace on his right knee. He had limited participation, and Rivera said he got "a little sore" as practice went on. Rivera reiterated that he expects Smith to play Sunday against the Saints.

Greg Hardy went home Thursday morning due to illness. Rivera hopes Hardy's illness is short term.

Jonathan Stewart practiced again Thursday and Rivera said he did not see the same apprehension when the running back cut as he did at Wednesday's practice.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, Did Rivera jsut say the Panthers QB played out of a pocket? What fantasy land is he living in? The "pocket" is more like a crease that is gone within 2 seconds.

Saints in a roll. Not close, not at any point.

mmm yea, the Aint's aren't going to roll over the Panthers on Sunday. 35-31 panthers. Fug the Aints

Cam will be good, but RG3 will be better, IMO. Unless Cam improves his accuracy drastically.

Speaking of Steve Smith, Tampa Bay's new Rookie Safety Mark Barron scares me. I've seen pretty much every game in Steve Smith's career and he's definitely one of the strongest WR's in this league. But I have never seen somebody knock the crap out of Smith like Barron did last Sunday.

If Rivera thinks Newton is a "vertical" pocket quarterback, somebody better start teaching Newton how to read a defense...if he's capable of learning. So far he shows to be nothing more than a Vick. Trade for RG3 right now!

dirty vs clean - Way to keep your post clean with the BS comments. Everyone makes mistakes and I'm sure RG3 doesn't have a mistake free record either. If you're just going to go out and call Cam a bum, poorly educated, blah blah then you obviously haven't paid a lick of attention to what he's done off the field since he's been here. The guy has set up numerous charities, is active in the community and you sure as heck don't see him on the 11:00 news for anything he's not supposed to be doing. So take your tail, stick it between your legs and get out of here with that garbage.

no way in hell can anyone say RG3 is better than Cam after one game. How many records did Cam break his rookie year? He threw 300 yards on a very very bad game, RG3 is better! Come on man! RG3 is a M. Vick thats all. Cam is a 6-5 245 linebacker playing QB that can run and throw aswell! Think people think!

Wow, amazing the trash that come on these boards sometimes. I'm surprised ya'll are even capable of pushing the power button on your computer.

DvsC-Think I missed where the article said Cam was better than RGIII, maybe you can help me out?

John Law-You obviously haven't watched Vick or Cam play yet have you? If you did, you would notice that Cam doesn't like to run unless he absolutely has to or the play is called for him. Vick pretty much looks at 1 receiver then takes off. HUGE difference, but nice try.

You Panther fans are a funny bunch! You act as if Cam was something special and the league is worried. That is a JOKE! EVERY team would love to play the Panthers week after week. Easyt o beat, and the "home stadium" is nothing more than a rest over home for whatever team is visiting. The Saints fans will once again OWN BOA this Sunday around the 3:00 hour. The whine n cheese crowd will go home after the Panthers are down by 30, and the diehards will pass out by then. Then as normal, the Saints fans will make it their own little Bourbon Street.

It's comical to me that it's one game into the season and a Cam (2nd season) vs. RG3 (rookie season) comparison is even being made. Yes, Cam struggled against TB. But he didn't exactly have much help since the run game was non-existent and he had hands in his face by the time the ball was in his hands. Let's what RG3 is at the end of the season. Let's not forget who holds the rookies passing record for yardage and rushing TDs by a QB. Oh yea. It's Cam Newton.

Right, Vilma... All the Saints fans that have been around since 2009.

Did someone really just try to insinuate that Jimmy Clausen is a better QB than Newtwon? Get out of there! LOL. Good grief.

DaveM-He's probably an Alabama fan. It's really amazing that people can have that kind of hatred built up inside of them about a football player, of all people.

Yeah, Pickles is better than Cam. Just like you should pro-create.

Posted by: MJW | Sep 13, 2012 5:35:13 PM

Yea, he's probably related to that moron who killed the famous tree on Auburn's campus.

Posted by: davem | Sep 13, 2012 6:01:42 PM

It's unbelievable the time and energy someone is expending to criticize Cam by creating multiple accounts and posting criticisms under all of them...

Trying to compare RG3 to Cam Newton, is STUPID. They both have totally different styles of play. Both will be great QB's. Cam is just light years ahead of RG3. SO stop comparing APPLES 2 ORANGES!!!

Sports columnist are comical, before RG3 played his first game it was Cam Vs Luck, Luck had a ho hum first game and is now forgotten. I guess every game or every season it will be Cam against the new wonder boy of the week. Good greef! some people need to find more constructive subjects to write about, but I guess that's how they sell papers and keep all the Cam haters busy.

talk about a bad comparison. first off, Newton and RG3 are woefully different and being a Redskin fan from carolina, i seen both guys play. the running styles, different and the passing is too early to judge because RG3's only played one game and i'm not just basing the passing on stats. as for Vick, i think they both are more pocket passers than Vick. Vick's improved, but it took years for that and both Newton and RG3 seem ahead of Vick in that area when he was their age.

The only comparison to rg3 and cam is obvious, they are both black qbs in the nfl..yep i said it..move on..next question

Posted by: pantherworld | Sep 14, 2012 12:44:55 AM

RG3 compares well to the guy who washes Cam's jock strap!!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!

Posted by: TheTruth | Sep 16, 2012 4:54:10 PM

First of all cam newton is definately not 40 pounds heavier what is the coach on? crack?
he weighs 245, RGIII weighs 223... thats not a huge difference given that cam is 3 inches taller, 2nd RGIII has world class speed, cam has slow running back speed, RGIII can make any throw on the field WITH accuracy not just power like cam... RGIII will break cams rookie records take my word for it... at this point cam newton already through 5 interceptions.. RGIII only has 1 int.. and currently at week 4 rated 4th QB rating over all.. CAM is below 20th
