Panthers not moving Kuechly to the middle

Even if Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason can't play against Atlanta, Panthers coach Ron Rivera will not move Luke Kuechly to the middle.

Kuechly set NCAA tackling records as a middle linebacker at Boston College, but he's settled in at the weakside spot after the Panthers drafted him No. 9 overall last spring.

“The one thing we want to be careful of is moving Luke too soon,” Rivera said Thursday. “Luke could probably play some Mike for us. He'll do it in the sub-package, with Jon not playing. And who knows, if this is extended, maybe we will consider doing that.”

Jason Phillips, who started all four preseason games while Beason was out, will get the call against the Falcons if Beason can't go.

The Panthers have not ruled Beason out for Sunday's game. But the three-time, Pro Bowler has yet to practice this week as he nurses shoulder and knee injuries.

“The shoulder and knee obviously are concerns. And the one thing we need to be careful of is getting him back out there and he tries to play through it again and does more damage,” Rivera said. “That's probably why we're being overly cautious right now.”

Rivera said he felt good about RB Jonathan Stewart's chances to play against the Falcons. Stewart has practiced on a limited basis this week after missing the Giants' game on Sept. 20 with a toe injury.

Rivera said DE Antwan Applewhite (lacerated knee) and OL Mike Pollak (shoulder) likely are out this week. DE Greg Hardy practiced for the first time Thursday since breaking his thumb covering a punt against the Giants.

Breaks my heart to say it but Beason is done! He is getting plowed over! How many great players were wasted by this franchise?

SMH. More wasted money on a player thats not producing on the field. I've NEVER been a fan of Beason. He can't cover, he can't tackle, and now he's injury prone.

Correct! Beason could never cover anybody or blitz! So let's make him the highest paid inside linebacker in the NFL! Perfect Hurney logic!

Ilove a good football game to .BUT it just gets my last nerve when people feel sorry for these players,THEY ARE F---ING MEGA RICH AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOU FOOLS!!!

can armanti or jimmy play middle lb ?

give armanti a few yrs to "try the position", he's very athletic and gifted.

Lets just hope the falcons dont go 80 yards for a td on their first drive. Or their second ,third, fourth, and fifth.

So much ignorance in hear. Beason cant tackle?? Beason was a top 5 MLB in the nfl before his achilles and you all want to judge after 3 games?

Posted by: Eric | Sep 27, 2012 7:08:16 PM

Definitely one of the lowest knowledged fan base ever. You idiots that think that Beason is done. ARE FOOLS. The guy is hurt not dead. Let him heal and he'll be worth every penny we gave him. It stinks when the injury bug hits a player. Especially when he just got a huge deal. It happens. Give him some time and he'll be just fine. Amazes me at the Madden mentality this forum has.

@eric, key word WAS a top five MLB, your living in the past like Hurney. Beason was trying to tackle that RB for NY whom been cut by every team he played for and he just bounced off him. Shook Beason off like he was nothing. It's a wrap folks. @davethepantehr, if I'm looking at Beason's contract, he doesn't have time. Being paid all that money he needs to be on the field. If you cannot produce, you need to be cut. Wish we had management that cared about winning.

wow Beason is a beast he's dealing with a injury and tried to play through it. Whats sad is that more than likely 99 percent of you probably never played tackle football and I aint talking about madden. The guy had a bad game and this came after the fact that he made a interception on the Saints to seal a victory for us. So stop hating you people are never supportive its sickening! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TEAMS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THIS GUY ON THEIR TEAM SO STFU! GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: footballknowledge | Sep 28, 2012 4:11:46 AM

Face it Panther fans --->Matt Ryan and my Falcons are going to RIP "crybaby Cammy's defense" into shreds!!! Goooooooooooo FALCONS!!!!!!!

Posted by: Eric J | Sep 28, 2012 5:14:43 AM

It does not matter who starts in the middle. We lose by 30+ with either starting.

Posted by: Got's mine | Sep 28, 2012 8:09:41 AM

Beason should of been cut long time ago.

Posted by: Eric J | Sep 28, 2012 10:20:11 AM

insane to believe the comments on here.

Fairweather to say the least. let the guy come back. he had a devastating injury last season and he's played in......3 games since?

talk about a lack of patience. he was once the best young linebacker in the game. let him have some time before determining if he's done or not.

I think everyone needs to realize and appreciate the gift that Marty Hurney and our Scouting Dept. has given us. Take the opponent, when a decent to good one, to cover the points and buy yourself a freaking Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. Had to be PC else Stephen A. Smith might come after me too.

It's obvious how stupid the Panthers fan base is. Beason can't tackle? He can't cover? Beason is regarded as one of the best tacklers in football and one of the fastest LB's as well. He's considered a great coverage LB. He has multiple interceptions in his career and has always been a sure tackler. But of course when you have idiot fans who don't understand the game see the stat sheet and he's not averaging 12 sacks and 100 tackles a game he's "done." What is wrong with you? Are you guys really that stupid? He hasn't played in almost a full year and has only had 3 games to try and get back and he's not even at 100% strength. He'll return to form with more playing time and rest. If you have anything negative to say about Beason I would like you to remember that you're an idiot and need to shut up.

By the end of October the fans will all be looking forward to the Bobcats season. What a garbage product the Big Rat is selling, yet the gullible line up to buy tickets. He is laughing at you all the way to the bank!

@mikep..i second that , ihate our fan base, the worst in the league, no support for the players at all
