« Panthers sack Cutler six times, lead 13-7 at half | Main | Rivera: No plans to make moves before trade deadline »

October 28, 2012

Gould FG wins it for Chicago, 23-22

Score: Bears 23, Panthers 22

Scoring play: A game-winning 41-yard field goal by Robbie Gould.

Drive: 9 plays, 55 yards, 2:27

--

Score: Panthers 22, Bears 20

Scoring play: A 45-yard field goal by Justin Medlock.

Drive: 11 plays, 53 yards, 4:17.

Key play: On third-and-short from the Carolina 45-yard line, Newton faked a rush left and went bootleg right to pick up 16 yards and get the first down and into Bears' territory.

Time of game: 2:27 in the fourth quarter.

Worth mentioning: Again, the Panthers are 1-9 under Ron Rivera in games decided by one score.

--

Score: Bears 20, Panthers 19

Scoring play: A 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Tim Jennings.

Key play: Steve Smith fell down on his route as Newton looked for him out of shotgun. Tim Jennings snagged the ball for his second interception of the game along the far sideline and went into the end zone untouched.

Time of game: 6:44 in the fourth quarter.

Worth mentioning: The Bears now have six takeaways that have been returned for a touchdown.

--

Score: Panthers 19, Bears 14

Scoring play: A 12-yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Kellen Davis.

Drive: 7 plays, 38 yards, 3:26

Key play: Cutler hit Brandon Marshall for a 15-yard gain on 3-and-8 to perserve the drive. The Bears were already in four-down territory down two scores, but Marshall's catch avoided that.

Time of game: 6:52 in the fourth quarter.

Worth mentioning: Cam Newton has 300 passing yards for the first time all season. But the Panthers are 0-3 when Newton has done that previously.

--

Score: Panthers 19, Bears 7

Scoring play: A 43-yard field goal by Justin Medlock.

Drive: 8 plays, 63 yards, 4:02

Key play: A 47-yard pass from Cam Newton to Steve Smith. On first down, Newton passed a deep ball to Smith along the near sideline. Smith pulled it down at the Bears' 25 to get the Panthers within striking distance.

Time of game: 1:30 in the third.

Worth mentioning: Entering the game, Medlock had just two field goal attempts all season (both makes). Today, he has four (34, 31, 22 and 43 yards).

--

Score: Panthers 16, Bears 7

Scoring play: A 22-yard field goal by Justin Medlock.

Drive: 12 plays, 90 yards, 6:32

Key play: On 3-and-10 near midfield, Newton found Mike Tolbert sitting in the middle of the field but short of the sticks. Tolbert shook two Chicago would-be tacklers and picked up 15 yards for the first down.

Time of game: 6:47 in the third quarter.

Worth mentioning: The Bears have -10 passing yards so far this game. Cutler has been sacked six times this game, all in the first half. Carolina leads in total yardage 306-54.

What's new.....defense is horrible when it really counts, too many 5'09 DB who can't cover......

Posted by: Panther fan | Oct 28, 2012 4:13:39 PM

The panther secondary has no clue how to bump someone off the line - they play 10 yards deep and just keep giving up the yards, pass after pass - as if running up to the guy after the catch is the goal. Bunch of idiots!

Posted by: Harold | Oct 28, 2012 4:17:34 PM

those guys are too small and too slow!

Classic SNAFU!!!!!!!!

I think it's obvious why nobody gave Ron Rivera a shot before us. It might also be time to let Cam watch a game from the bench. Teams have him figured out, and his attitude is atrocious. I would much rather have Jay Cutler as our quarterback than Newton- he'd be a much better teammate.

Coaches are history. BYE!!

Bad coaching like usual.....get rid of Murphy never catches the ball when we need it.....awful game. Where's williams give th w playmaker the ball on sweeps, what happened to sweeps, did they take those out of the play book?

Posted by: Panther fan | Oct 28, 2012 4:24:01 PM

They never thought they would win. They have a losing mentality and are the worst team in the NFL by long shot

Posted by: Tiger 2 | Oct 28, 2012 4:24:36 PM

Once again when you play not to lose, you lose!!! We need and agressive coach!!! This sucks!!!

Special teams coordinator needs to be fired tomorrow. Why are we pooch kicking the ball instead of kicking the ball into the endzone? What was up with a 6 yard punt. If we can't tackle on ST, then our scheme is wrong, the players are bad or the Coordinator can't coach. No excuse for loosing this game other than being afraid of Devin Hester. Just pathetic.

Posted by: beachbum | Oct 28, 2012 4:28:26 PM

I counted 5 slant plays on the last drive, for 10-15 yards each. Unacceptable defense when it counted most. Our d-line had been providing awesome pressure when Cutler took too much time. They adjusted and went with quicker passes. We still FAIL to make adustments and jam the receivers off the line to force Cutler into taking longer. I know we don't want to get burned deep, but we gave up 50-65 yards and these dink-and-dunk passes, when all they needed was a field goal. Embarrasing. Pitiful coaching, Rivera. That's on you!!

Posted by: dangburnit | Oct 28, 2012 4:30:06 PM

This "team" continues to find ways to lose. D can't get it done when it counts. Coaching is weak. Cam is on the verge of being a bust. Get's old trying to remain a fan of this organization.

Posted by: Frustrated Fan | Oct 28, 2012 4:30:25 PM

I'm afraid Charlotte has become loserville, USA - Panthers and Bobcats. Two poorly run franchises that are going nowhere but to a new city soon.

Posted by: Tiger 2 | Oct 28, 2012 4:31:14 PM

Rivera...god to see you show emotion at Munnerlyn when there were too many guys on the field for a FG. But if you don't fire special teams coach Murphy tomorrow, I'm selling my PSL's (since day 1). On one play too many guys on the field and forces a timeout. Then we have too few on the field on another FG? We can't kickoff and tackle the return man, so we spot them the ball at the 40 or better? Why not just kick it out of bounds and not risk injury or dirty jerseys?

Posted by: dangburnit | Oct 28, 2012 4:36:13 PM

Cam...for your suggestion box. Look in the mirror. You are a huge part of the problem. Fumbling at the gaol line? Really? Erratic passes, whether they are long or short? You need to learn consistency and touch. Try throwing a real footbal when you have time off instead of playing X-box. That's how REAL quarterbacks learn to get better and trust their touch. You have zero confidence and it shows, but you try to mask it as though others are the problem. Get a clue.

Chicago Bears like all other Pussyrat opponents know its a W so they get cocky and take the week off with NO practice but then all these dumb bastards all party on Saturday Night downtown at Gators and look what happens just trying to keep it close. Damn.

Bears let the Pusheadz lead until late in the 2nd and playing chicken still half drunk and blind from boozing into Sunday AM when they finally leave at 4AM with the coaches. Jesus Krist ...

Bears better be careful. They are playing chicken too long.

Goodell earlier demanded the Saints lose to the Puzheadz or face a 50 million fine.

The Scam Curse Strike Again !!!!!

ps Butler or Catholic High Schoolers will suit up against the Skins secretly and help with a rare W if requested ... send an email or call the school ...

Another pathetic performance by the Carolina Panthers. Another pick six for Newton and a another FAILURE TO WIN A CLOSE GAMES BY A RON RIVERA COACHED TEAM WHICH MAKES HIM 1-10 IN THOSE CLOSE GAME. THIS TEAM IS IMPLODING AND RIVERA NEEDS TO GO ALONG WITH HIS ENTIRE STAFF AND LET THE HOUSE CLEANING BEGIN. WHAT A NIGHTMARE OF A SEASON! WORST THAN THE 2010 DEBACLE TO ME.

scam curse strikes again

I have to say this.....What the heck are you talking about? I'm lost trying to figure out who went out all night. If you think the Bears did, you're wrong. They haven't gone into a game this year thinking it was going to be a piece of cake.

Posted by: Nance | Oct 28, 2012 5:08:30 PM

@ tebow says he'll think about it.
I know for SURE I'd give up on the panthers if tebow was our quarterback!!!

Don't start blaming everything on Cam...an example would be Smitty slipped on the route and the other guy was able to get the ball (Smitty couldn't help slipping, it happens) Other times, receivers didn't hold on to perfectly placed balls. Yes Cam made some mistakes too....the fumble. But it was a TEAM loss, not just one or two guys. It's a shame as there were some really good moments in this game. As one poster noted, I think they played too far back from the receivers and they easily got into field goal range.

Posted by: I've seen it too | Oct 28, 2012 5:19:31 PM

Oh...and Greg Olsen...way to take the day off!! Two horrible plays by you (at least that I saw without the benefit of film review) had hugely negative impacts. On one, you stood up at the snap and allowed the defensive end (#98, a big, big boy) free access to the backfield where he creamed DeAngelo just after the handoff. That play could have ended up ending DeAngelo's season or career. You simply just can't do that to your teammate. I'm waiting to see if you post the photograph you must have taken as you got your a$$ handed to you. The second piss poor play was the interception you allowed to happen, again right under your friggin' nose (did you get a photo of that one too?). Cam threw a desperate "don't get sacked, throw the ball away" pass in your direction, and you took pics while the cornerback hustled, dove and intercepted the pass....on THEIR freakin' side of the field!!! Hello!! Buehler? Anybody freakin' home? I sympathize with your personal life events and the potential for distraction, but this lack of effort is for high school, not professional football. Unacceptable.

Panthers do not have what it takes to win ball games. Three times in the fourth quarter the Panthers could have put the game away and they didn't. This has been the story since Ron Rivera has arrived. I like Rivera but it is more than evident that he is not head coaching material. The pooch kicks, not going for a field goal before halftime, the non-killer instinct - conservative play when we have the lead in the fouth is getting old. We have too much talent on this team to be losing games like this. I would rather get blown out every game than keep losing by little margins. I love my Panthers and I think Newton is our QB, (given a serious attitude adjustment), but this coaching staff is suspect at best........
