Panthers preparing to play Sunday without three starters

For the second straight day, linebacker Jon Beason, guard Geoff Hangartner and cornerback Chris Gamble did not participate in practice.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera spelled out the team's contingency plan should the three starters be ruled out for Sunday's game against Seattle.

Reserve Garry Williams will start in place of Hangartner should the guard not recover enough from the knee injury that's kept him off the practice field. Second-year cornerback Josh Thomas would see time in place of Gamble if the Panthers' top corner can't go.

Rivera said the team is trying out a few options for the hole at middle linebacker should Beason's knee keep him out of Sunday's game. The coach has said previously he doesn't want to move WLB Luke Kuechly to middle, but the rookie will see reps in the middle this week.

"You look at what could potentially happen and you say to yourself, is the best thing to keep him static and just move one guy or is it to move guys around? We have to look at that and see how it impacts what we want to do," Rivera said.

S/ST Colin Jones and reserve guard Mike Pollak also did not practice, while defensive end Frank Alexander and Antwan Applewhite both participated fully in practice on Thursday.

Can we play without 43 too?

Watch this trend... this is Hurney's MO. At the end of the year they will have 20 on IR, and he has a built in excuse. Guys will be placed on the IR with a hang nail.

PS Green Bay won the Super Bowl with over 22 guys on IR

Can we put Hurney on the IR?

i feel there is no reason to blame the coach, OC or DC week in and out. This team has no depth, all our backups are scrubs or rejects. Because we have no depth any injury for our starters is disastrous. Who do we blame for a lack of depth, Marty Hurney.

I love Beason but I think we need to think about trading him while he still has value. Hes off the field entirely too much and if hes not healthy then hes useless to us.

Dave, when has Beason been off the field this year? Pretty sure he's played in all 4 games so far, so please give that dead horse a rest.

If Beason can't go, need to shift the kid over into the middle and his natural position. Start 58 and watch him wreak havoc. I still don't understand how 43 is getting more PT right now. Must have absolutely no faith in Martin at this point.

When it's all said and done, this team will only improve once Hurney is gone. Maybe someone can answer, but has there been a GM that has been in the league as long with the record this guy has put together? I seriously don't understand it. It's like JR is being blackmailed or just doesn't give a crap! Hurney even said himself in the interview the other day that he makes all football decisions.

Beason needed to be off field b/c he's missed some key EASY tackles that ended up in scores!!! Somethings gotta give!!!
