C Ryan Kalil out for the season with foot injury
UPDATED (2:25 p.m.): Minutes after confirming Ryan Kalil's foot injury was worse than expected, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the starting center is out for the season.
Kalil has a Lisfranc injury to his left foot that will require surgery. The Panthers will place him on the injured reserve.
Rivera said the injury occured before halftime of the Seattle game on Sunday. His foot was re-taped and Kalil played the rest of the game.
"It's unfortunate. He was having a terrific year in spite of our situation," Rivera said. "Individually he was doing great. We're just going to hope for the best and we'll go from there."
Kalil took out an ad in the Charlotte Observer at the start of training camp promising the city a Super Bowl.
"He's certianly one of the emotional leaders and it's hard to replace those kind of guys," Rivera said. "But the truth of the matter is, it's time for us as a team to step up anyway. And this is anothe one of those things that's going to try us. That's why we keep guys as back-up players. Now they've got their opportunity."
Rivera said the team may look outside the organization for help on the offensive line.
Carolina Panthers center Ryan Kalil could miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday.
Kalil injured his foot during Sunday's game against Seattle, and the coach said Monday that Kalil had sprained his foot. But the Pro Bowl center went to the doctor this week and the injury is believed to be worse than originally thought.
"I know he's going to talk to Dr. (Robert) Anderson, but it's really not looking good right now," Rivera said.
"It's scary. If we do (move him to IR), we'll probably announce something soon."
The Panthers only have one healthy center on the roster in combo guard/center Jeff Byers. G/C Geoff Hangartner was inactive for Sunday's game, and G/C Mike Pollak was placed on injured reserve last week with an injured shoulder.

The jinx of the ad. I really like what Kalil did, but this season is a disaster.

Top 5 pick here we come. The question is who do you guys like in the Top 5? I say best rated DE, DT, or CB.

This is terrible news for the Panthers. The team is imploding and the season is becoming an after thought.

Kalil should have kept his mouth shut and never posted the ad. Karma. This team is getting worse by the week!

Memo to Panthers: Next season talk about how bad you're going to be so you'll meet your fans' expectations. Better yet...don't talk at all. Just perform (for a change).

What is the foot injury specifically?
Also, when is Hangartner scheduled back?
This report is amazingly vague. It's just short of saying "the team has some players with injuries". Gee thanks for the update!

According to what I saw on Twitter it's a Lisfranc injury.
Lisfranc (midfoot) injuries result if bones in the midfoot are broken or ligaments that support the midfoot are torn. The severity of the injury can vary from simple to complex, involving many joints and bones in the midfoot.
This is the same injury that Cedric Benson of the Packers sustained on Sunday.

Great. What else will go wrong this season?

I guess Hurney and Rivera will find another scrub from San Diego....Hurney will trade draft picks and sign him to a huge deal also

OT: How much of a cap hit will cutting Deangelo cost?

I said this 5 blog entries ago, this will be the trend now. Hurney will load up the IR with players with hiccups. At the end of the year he will say, in a gruff voice, "well we had 16 guys on the IR."

No excuses, a losing record and Hurney should not last a week past the last game.

On the bright side, he can expect a HUGE pay raise and contract extension if Hurney's history tells us anything.

As if the line wasn't playing bad enough...

Specifically, he's suffering from foot in mouth disease.

Kalil really injured his foot when he stuck it in his mouth.

START WINNING, OUR PICK WILL BE 32ND.

Top 5 in the draft. My money is on us selecting a RB or LB. Those obvious deficiencies we have on defensive line and secondary will work itself out in time. No need to waste a draft pick there.

It's simple now. We just groom one of our draft choices for this position, right Marty?

Guess he can now come to the East Gate and run interference for those of us who go to a football game and expect to see an opening kickoff
