Rivera: No plans to make moves before trade deadline

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that, to his knowledge, the team isn't looking to make moves before Tuesday's trade deadline.

Rivera has said since the bye the Panthers are in an evaluation process -- one that has included roster cuts and personnel changes. But he said Carolina isn't actively pursuing the trade market.

"We've got to sit here and see if somebody does call, but we're not looking to move anybody or send anybody away or try to get anybody out there," Rivera said. "I don't think we have a lot to give in terms of trying to trade for players."

Running back DeAngelo Williams has been the subject of a potential trade. A team source told the Observer that at least one playoff-contending team has reached out to the Panthers about possibly trading for the back.

Rivera said he has not discussed a Williams trade with anyone and referred questions to Brandon Beane, who has been handling personnel duties since Marty Hurney was fired last week. He declined to discuss the potential of a Williams trade further.

Bench Cam, start DA, give this team a reason to play the rest of the games. Nothing can be worse than it is right now.

that whole john fox not giving out information to the public might have been annoying to the press.....but it sure didn't tell people what we were planning or not planning to do.

rivera isn't the guy. he just isn't. this isn't a knee jerk reaction like the ones he has....we've watched him make mistake after mistake week in and week out. last year was his first year you let things slide early. but now? this guy wastes a time out because we had 10 guys on the field for a chicago field goal attempt. you burn it if we have 12 and the 5 yards gets them a first down or makes a significant difference in makeability of the kick. NOT BECAUSE YOU HAVE 1 GUY MISSING.

that could have been huge for us had chicago scored a touchdown quickly at the end. they are the kind of things fox never effed up on and we took for granted.

now the nfl scheduling will rub it in our faces in 2 weeks. awesome.

i would give up next year's 1st round pick to get fox (and hurney really) back. that's the difference between this team being 1-6 and 4-3.

when you are specifically trying to avoid punting to hester and you just got handed a missed field goal.....and if you continue the current drive you could run the clock way down up 2 possessions.....YOU GO FOR IT ON 4th and less than a yard near mid field.

don't blame nortman for the shanked punt. they told him to make a perfect punt in the wind with the block rush on. could have just told cam "fall forward". game over. even if he didn't get it your win probability is way higher taking the chance. you don't lose much at all even with a good punt.

the kickoff scheme didn't end up hurting us because of how well our d-line played, but that was a horrible idea. you don't intentionally walk barry bonds 6 times because he's barry bonds. if he hits one 500 feet, you start giving free passes but you don't put runners on for no reason. it's playing scared. you can't effing do that.

Fans cut down John Fox saying how pathetic a coach he was and a non winner. lol, looks like pie in the face of thos Fox haters, as the Panther's linger in last place and lose, his Bronco's win and will be in the playoffs

Posted by: Laughing | Oct 29, 2012 1:15:37 PM

I can't believe people are crying over John Fox and want Anderson to play! You deserve a losing team! The o-line is bad! Period! They knew it and did nothing the entire pre-season!

The fans should embarass the team like the team has embarrassed the city: Fans should boycott the games or either show up with bags on their heads. Cam Newton, DeAngelo, Stewart,Tolbert andLoius Murphy stole millions of dollars from the PANTHER ORGANIZATION and then went AWOL.

I'm betting the playoff contending team contacting the Panthers was Denver. Fox has a great team brewing out in Denver...a strong running game that makes Peyton very dangerous throwing the ball. But they are one injury away in the backfield from being crushed. Adding DWill to that Bronco offense would make them a legitimate SB contender in the AFC, which is very open.

Enough about Fox! Who cares, it was his time to move on. And please with the whole Broncos making the playoffs bit. I could coach #18 and make the playoffs!!!!

Posted by: Mike P | Oct 29, 2012 1:23:29 PM

Panthers are talking with the Bills about moving Steve Smith.

Posted by: Johnny | Oct 29, 2012 1:24:58 PM

If Brandon Beane has half a brain, he'll deal one of our 3 RBs for a future draft pick. I am not interested in trading for anyone to come in now. Let make the right hire and let the new GM do this. Right now... figure a way to stockpile picks!!

Posted by: PantherCane | Oct 29, 2012 1:26:03 PM

The Panthers are the only team is in he NFL that plays scared. Carolina could be up 50 points going into the 4th quarter and would squander it playing scared....THE PANTHERS CAN NOT, WILL NOT AND SHALL NOT SCORE A TOUCDOWN IN THE 4TH QUARTER: ITS WRITTEN IN THE NFL HANDBOOK AND ALL 31 TEAMS ENSURE IT WONT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When does rae carruth come back ?

Posted by: Crab Claw | Oct 29, 2012 1:49:05 PM

Rae Carruth???? OK folks have gotten to a new low in desperation for this team!!
Trade Williams away for something, draft picks or whatever and Smith, not a bad idea, if we get something huge in return!

Any coach that states as part of the team strategy "we were trying to make them beat us systematically" should be let go on the spot. Choosing your method of how you are going to lose says alot about your ability to be a head coach. Good grief.

u can trade me!

BREAKING NEWSS RON RIVERIA FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am the new coach..lol

Posted by: KENJ | Oct 29, 2012 2:16:54 PM

little league coach's could have this team 1-6, the man should be ashamed.

how can he sit there and talk about possible trades when he can't even make basic decisions about a game he has been involved in his entire life.

I'm sure he's a good man, but he is not a very smart coach.

Rivera said, "I don't think we have a lot to give in terms of trying to trade for players."

Rivera might be a bonehead, but that is the most accurate statement he's made since he's been here. And it's the most damning thing you can say about this team.

Everybody can quit hollering about "trade (insert name here) for (insert price here). All the NFL front offices know we have no leverage, and any player we have that is worth a crap is way overpaid and no one will take the bloated contracts. These contracts are the disease Hurney left us with that will take years to recover from. DeAngelo is 1-2 years away from the cliff all feature RBs fall off of once they are used up, but Hurney signed him to QB money anyway. He did the same with Stewart, who has more in the tank than Williams but will fall off that RB cliff halfway through his massive contract. He found out Charles Johnson wants to play for the Falcons, so he gave him double what he would have got from the Falcons on the open market (and CJ has done nothing to hide the fact he would rather play for the Falcons than us). Beason is finished; he will never be a dominant LB again, but he's on the books for 4 more years (good thing we already have his replacement). It's a Hurney pattern. Hurney & Fox both should have been fired before the 2009 season (Fox for approving a game plan that used NOT guarding Larry Fitzgerald as a strategy, Hurney for giving Jake the new contract).

And no, do not even think about wanting Fox back. Fox is still stuck in 1965 and thinks that the forward pass is not as good a play as a punt. The civil war I was predicting for Denver hasn't happened probably because Elway told Fox to let Peyton do whatever he bloody well wants to do, and the Broncos are winning in spite of their coach.

Everybody shut up with the stupid John Fox comments! That train left long ago, and it ain't coming back. Dam! I hate Panthers fans even though I am one. The typical non-football knowledgeable Panthers fans are back on here with their corny John Fox! and Bring back Jake! CRAP. Shut your mouth and know your role. Just shut the heck up! I think Riviera needs to go, but, my God, How in God's name could you prefer John Fox and Marty Hurney back?! Put a hole in my head first! I bet you all want Cam gone and for us to bring Jake back! OMG I can't stand it any longer. I think I'm about to crap myself just thinking about it!

We are on the right track now with Hurney gone and these people want him back! OMG Hey, Jerry, just fire everybody and bring real football people in like... (anybody from the Bellichick coaching tree)

the Bears are who we thought they were! That's why we took the damn field. Now if you want to crown them, then crown their ass! But they are who we thought they were! And we let 'em off the hook!

Posted by: dennis g | Oct 29, 2012 3:12:26 PM

Hey, "you guys talking about trading players and stockpiling picks", Don't worry. We are about to get the #1 pick. And that alone will bring us a plethora of picks pending a trade with another team (such as KC, NYJ, BUF, etc.) Because we don't need a QB, we got one!!!!! So shut your mouths all u dam haters! Cam is a beast and the rest of this roster can burn for all I care! (Except Steve Smitty)

J in KP,

Will you please be the new GM ?
