Panthers place Pilares on IR, activate Gettis

Panthers wideout David Gettis is on the active roster for the first time in a season and a half, although his promotion came at a cost.

Interim general manager Brandon Beane said second-year receiver/kick returner Kealoha Pilares was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after injuring his shoulder during a second-half kickoff return at Washington.

Beane said Pilares will require season-ending shoulder surgery. Pilares averaged 24.0 yards on nine returns after replacing rookie Joe Adams, who was benched after fumbling twice against the Giants in Week 3.

Adams likely will reclaim his job, unless Ron Rivera decides to go with Gettis or Armanti Edwards.

Gettis, a sixth-round pick from Baylor in 2010, played in 15 games as a rookie, including 13 starts. He caught 37 passes for 508 yards and three touchdowns.

Gettis tore his ACL at training camp last year, and began this season on the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury. The Panthers had until Tuesday to activate Gettis or he would have missed the rest of the season.

Later Tuesday afternoon, the Panthers announced they had signed C Thomas Austin to the practice squad after cutting him from the 53-man roster late last week. Carolina cut LB Jerry Franklin to make room for Austin.

Bummer about Pilares. I really think that he's got some potential as a receiver as well as a returner.

So how did his promotion come "at a cost" if Pilares was out for the season with surgery? Could he have delayed the surgery? If so, how many other players are delaying surgeries that could be done now?

FACT!

Don't recruit players from Hawaii.

FACT!

Don't recruit players from Crap State.

FACT!

Put a bounty on Manning this Sunday. Bring back the swagger and the respect.

Hate that pilares went down but it actually saves the panthers from making a bad personnel decision right now.

instead of cutting either edwards, adams, gettis, or pilares (none of whom deserve it right now IMO) our hand was played for us. good opportunity to let edwards or adams have another go of it. either way it's good evaluation wise.

Very good point charlottean.

Put Adams back in, Pilares was horrible.

Net negative for the team...a solid, proven returner goes out for the season. In come a rookie that's VERY shaky and a player that hasn't been in an NFL game in 20 months. Maybe Kuechly can return kicks??

Pilares horrible? What do you expect, a TD return every kick? I'll tell ya. Some people.

No, Greg, no one expects a td every kick, but we do hope for more from the kr. Pilares had his sights set on the 20 yard line, once he got that far, he started looking for a place to fall.

Adams has to be the guy to take them. Easy decision.

i think you split it between edwards and adams. back and forth open competition until someone OWNS the job.

big gulps- "recruit players"? we're talking about the nfl. they don't recruit.

They scout!

Play Edwards more! He's shown what he can do in his very limited time!

I think Gettis is too big for a kick return position. Usually smaller players do that.
