Rookie LB Luke Kuechly named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Luke Kuechly's late-season push for Defensive Rookie of the Year picked up some steam Wednesday when he was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 14.

The middle linebacker tallied a career-high 16 tackles for the Carolina Panthers in their 30-20 win against the NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

He has three games of 15 or more tackles, and according to an NFL spokesman, no other player in the NFL has done that in more than one game.

His 130 tackles this season leads all NFL players. He's on track to finish with 160 tackles, which would place him second among rookies all-time behind only Patrick Willis, who won the 2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

"If there’s a better defensive rookie in the league, I haven’t seen him," defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said Monday. "Week in and week out he’s No. 1 or 2 on the list of tackles for us. The things he does as a rookie at the age of (21) is very impressive. He’s got a bright future and this organization is fortunate to have a player and person like Luke."

I think thats a pretty safe comment. Not sure how it is possible to have three games of 15+ tackles in ONE GAME.

I would think if you lead the league in tackles, you would be a lock for DRY and should most certainly be in the running for DPY. Kids a beast and can't wait to see him get better year after year after year. I wonder if Beason, if he's even on the team next year, will mind shifting to the outside?

The tackle comment means that no other player has more than one game with over 15 tackles, while Luke has three.

a good pick by the panthers.....they can get one right now and then.

I really like this guy. good team player, smart, works hard, isn't all about himself, doesn't sulk or wear a towel on his cranium when times are tough. very refreshing.

Love the idiots still commenting about the towel on Cam's head. It's weird because he had the towel on his head last week when they were winning. He was studying game photos when the defensive was on the field.

Luke Kuechly is the best LB in the history of the NFL.

Better start updating my resume

Posted by: Jon Beason | Dec 12, 2012 11:57:44 AM

Marty was always solid with first-round picks. It's the second- and third-round picks he royally stunk at. He definitely hit the bullseye with this one. Most of us were hollering for Fletcher Cox or Dontari Poe or Melvin Ingram. Kuechly is the best of the first-round defensive guys.

Now, hopefully we will land a GM who is as good in rounds 2 and 3 as in round 1, and we should be set up for a winning team next year.

amen to the not sulking and not being all into himself comment. We have enough of that in cam.

Personally, I think Luke is the future of the panthers. Cam is a good QB, hands down. But Luke brings something else, character, attitude, leadeship. You see him on the field leading, not taking a back seat. He knows what needs to be done, and does it. Franchise player.

Luke is a future all pro. He deserves to stay at middle backer whether or not Beason returns. I would love to have all 4 backers on the feild next year but the salary cap won't allow it in all likelihood.

Great player!

Cam wears the towell because Gatorade pays him to...

At least there's something to crow about in this lousy season. I'm looking forward to see this team turn it around and get productive...consistently...to finish strong. That would be a great way to go into the offseason. Then see who's available during free agency to help this team. I think this team is one click away from being successful and I hope it works out. Congrats to Luke for a job well done.

i agree henry and Me. Luke is the kind of player a team and its fanbase can be proud of.

A real idol for the kids.

His career and history in school is much better than the QB that left Florida for criminal activity and had a daddy for a college agent as he moved to other schools. I am glad that Cam is doing better now and is great....but he could learn a thing or two from class act Luke.

Never seen Luke disrespect anybody the way he did Gonzalez Sunday. Treated the future halloffamer like a rag doll one time. Love dat 'tude!

Bright spot in yet another wasted season. Great job Luke and thank you for being a model player on the field and off.

Luke should hook up with Chicago and replace Brian Urlacher who is in the waning days of a great career.

Hurney first round pick were gems. Afterwards something to be desired.

I notice that Luke seems to have gotten more vocal as the season progressed.A player that players the way he does always brings other players around him up to a higher level. Here's a salute to Luke.
