Breaking: Panthers hire Gettleman as GM

The Panthers' search for a new general manager is over after the team hired New York Giants executive Dave Gettleman on Wednesday afternoon.

Gettleman, 61, has a quarter-century of NFL experience and has been a part of six Super Bowl teams, including three that won rings – the 1997 Broncos and the 2007 and 2011 Giants.

He worked closely in New York with former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, who consulted the Panthers on the search and had two Giants' executives on his list of finalists. Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross interviewed for the job Tuesday.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has long admired the Mara family that owns the Giants and the organization in general.

“I was very impressed with Dave’s experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization,” Richardson said in a statement released by the team. “He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard, and he played an instrumental role in their success.”

Gettleman said he was “thrilled” to get his first GM job.

“I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to work in the Panthers organization,” Gettleman said in the release. “It is similar to the Giants organization in which I have had the privilege of working the last 15 years and has a lot of pieces in place for success. I am excited about getting started.”

Terms of Gettleman's deal were not disclosed.

A team spokesman said it might be next week before Gettleman is formally introduced in Charlotte.

Gettleman is one of four known external candidates to interview for the post, all of whom had extensive scouting experience. Besides the two Giants' execs, Tennessee Titans vice president of pro personnel Lake Dawson and Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp also met with Richardson.

Interim general manager Brandon Beane, who took over after Marty Hurney was fired in October, also was considered for the job.

I am sure the logical panther fans we have here will give him plenty of time to get things worked out....like 1 year lol. Seriously guys...lets give hime 3 years to draft guys and see what happens before we try and run him out of town.

Adult supervision in the front office will be welcome.

Good Luck Gettleman! You're going to need it with the team 16 million over the cap!

Good hire. If they can find a way to get Norv Turner in here to assist the offense I'll be very happy.

Posted by: White Powder Ma | Jan 9, 2013 5:57:18 PM

Excellent choice!

If they got norv turner in here as an OC i would do kart wheels down the field in a skirt while using a hula hoop and playing hacky sack with a 3 legged dog that has 3 eyes...

Posted by: This guy | Jan 9, 2013 6:01:07 PM

or assistant as you stated

Posted by: This guy | Jan 9, 2013 6:01:40 PM

As long as Norv would continue to be the OC and NOT the HC one day Im fine with that!!!
No surprise the new GM is formerly of the Giants Organization....definitely see a pattern here, John Fox, Getteman who else????

Hope he has an eye for talent...past the 1st Round and can balance the cap without it being too painful. Good luck.

FAR and AWAY the best choice of the 6 candidates listed in the paper recently.

Frankly I'm shocked that he agreed to take the job but there is no other way to construe this hiring -- a big positive. I really can't remember the last time Boone's Farm Jerry made a good decision but this one definitively was, positive.

Rivera is officially on a 1 year deal now, if he doesn't win at least 10 games and get into the playoffs he is G-O-N-E.

Seeya...

Lawrence Taylor for the new LB coach!!!!!!

Posted by: Man Up | Jan 9, 2013 6:22:23 PM

I dont want Norv. Id rather have Chud, Phillip Rivers has only regressed playing for Norv. I think we should give Kevin Greene a look for linebackers coach. He is working for Green Bay as an outside linebackers coach, and switch to a 3-4. And draft either an outside rushing linebacker ie Jarvis Jones or a nose tackle, we would be in a lot better situation. Then we could keep Kuechly and Jon Beason inside.

He will stop Cams pouting and take away the towel

Rivera is officially a Lame duck coach ,and Cam has 1 yr to get his act together ,or be sent packing...LOVE it!

Posted by: Cam's Entourage | Jan 9, 2013 6:45:50 PM

Cam be sent packing? lol yeah right, idiot. Quit attacking Rivera. I feel he can get it done, if he doesnt then hes gone. No need for all this name calking and whatnot, grow up. The biggest obstacle in having a successful '13 season right now is the cap & personnel, thats now Gettlemans problem, not Riveras.
