Could E.J. Manuel be a fit for Panthers?

MOBILE, Ala.

At the Senior Bowl last year, the Panthers had an eye on former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson as a potential, late-round pick and backup to Cam Newton. Wilson went to Seattle in the third round, won the starting job and led the Seahawks to the playoffs.

With No. 2 QB Derek Anderson a free agent and hinting that he might return to Cleveland with fomer Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, the Panthers could be in the market for a backup. Florida State's E.J. Manuel, built like at Newton at 6-4 and 237 pounds, said Tuesday he believes he could run the Panthers' offense, including the zone-read.

“I see a lot of myself in Cam, as far as being able to run and throw the ball,” Manuel said after a Senior Bowl practice. “I think it would be a good fit.”

But like Wilson, Manuel is drawing attention from teams looking for a starter. He met Monday night with new Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly and a team of Eagles' coaches and scouts.

Manuel, projected to go in the fourth or fifth round, said he has yet to sit down with the Panthers.

Manuel would be a good pick in the 5th round. Too bad he won't last that long.

cain't over look he was basically 4-0 in bowl games and comes out of school becoming the most accurate passer in school history with a rating of something like 67.1. With that said he won't be around in the 5th. I think he goes late 3rd or 4th. And teams should be stupid to pass on him if they need a good back up. will he start probably not, but if he can start making deep throws then yes.

If I ever see Clausen under center again I will scream of injustice to the heavens!

With the record that kid has he'll be gone in the early rounds. In my opinion he has the whole package. Jimbo and Bobby Bowden did the right thing when they got E.J. He is a class act and will do well in the NFL with the right organization. All the best E.J.

No and by that I mean HELL NO-and it has nothing to do with Manuel. We don't need to waste another draft pick on a young QB that won't ever see the field. We got far more pressing needs. Go get another vet to back up Cam, and focus on the O and D lines, secondary, and WR depth. Last thing we need is another Pickles Clausen/Tony Pike holding a clipboard.

They have Armanti Edwards. NO!

Unless he is available in the 4th or 5th, we have many bigger needs. DT, OT, WR and FS to name a few.

Yeah we need another Quarterback we had three including Armanti Edwards.OMG how stupid can we get.DT,WR,OL,CB,FS,K

Unfornately, it is too early to draft a mobile QB. My solution is sign Jason Campbell and draft Logan Thomas next season. We need to focus on the O-line and secondary. We want a QB to take over for Cam 4-5 yrs from now. With the emergence of Cam, RG3, R.Wilson, and Kapernick mobile won't stay on the board long.

It would be nice to see the Panthers have a solid draft this year. One where we get good players in the later rounds. Hurney did great with our first round picks but past that he did terrible. Seattle has 10 players on it's roster who were not even drafted last year! Now that's a solid GM!

For you Cackolacky dunderheads who keep clamoring for Armanti "The Mascot" Edwards, don't waste your time. With a new General Manager in place, there will be NO allegiance to this useless draft pick. Cry...cry all you want App State and Armanti fans, because Armanti will NOT be with the Panthers in 2013! He's certainly not a NFL QB, and he hasn't done anything in the Pros.
We're so tired of these comments about Armanti as QB, for he last played QB 4 years ago. Armanti will be a Ex-NFL player come Fall of 2013. Buh, bye Armanti...and good riddance!
As for the Panthers drafting a QB, the Cats now have a GM that is smart enough to know one can be had as a Free Agent...AFTER the draft.
