Shurmur interviewing with Panthers

(5:45 p.m. Monday update: Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach and former Oakland head coach Hue Jackson also interviewed for the Panthers' OC job today, a league source confirmed.)

The Panthers and Browns might be making a trade of sorts.

Former Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur is in Charlotte today interviewing for the Panthers' offensive coordinator job, a league source told the Observer.

Rob Chudzinski, the man who formerly held the job, replaced Shurmur last week as the Browns' coach.

The Panthers still hope to interview other candidates, although a couple of them – Ken Whisenhunt to name one – are in the running for head-coaching gigs. Carolina also is hoping to get Cincinnati assistant Hue Jackson in for an interview, although the Bengals apparently view Jackson as insurance in the event Jay Gruden gets a head-coaching job.

It is expected Shurmur, who worked with Panthers coach Ron Rivera in Philadelphia, would be asked to overhaul or scrap his West Coast offense if he accepted the job in Charlotte. The system is not much of a fit for Panthers QB Cam Newton and is a departure from the vertical stretch passing game employed by Chudzinski.

Whether Shurmur would be receptive to such a change, or whether it would be practical, are two pertinent questions that obviously have to be addressed.

Not a fan of Shurmur. Think its a very bad fit for Cam.

How about the 49ers coordinator / QB coach?

Kaepernick is making them look like innovators this post season.

Shurmer is awesome. Look at what he did for Sam Bradford. He won't deploy the West Coast offense her. He'd be great IMO

well, why not...

We are the NFC's version of the Browns.

People might not like a west coast offense. But it would probably win us more games. Screw the vertical passing attack. I want long sustained drives and punch the D in the mouth and wear em out. Not have our D on the field twice as long

Nothing says winning championships like the Cleveland Browns.

Promote Shula before Shurmur gets it

Could be a courtesy interview. After all, he did work with Rivera previously. Course he may be going that route because he cannot offer anymore security than 1 year. Ouch.

Seriously? He's who were looking at to help develop cam and our offense and help take us to the playoffs?? Oh, and please tell me what he did with sam Bradford that was so spectacular?? Cmon Rivera..remember you're looking to keep your job..

Long time Browns fan. Thanks for Chud, the Browns have hit a homerune hire with him. Pat is a good guy but would be a very bad choice for Cam,He has only run the west coast dink and dunk. No way they hire him.

what about seatlle oc offer him the positon and use asst hc to sell him on it . like they did with Hue and see if he goes for it or SanFrans

Anderson is as big a problem if he leaves!

Too early to comment on OC, have no idea who they are.

@Ty: this will be more of hire from the new GM Gettleman not Rivera. He will have input however. GO PANTHERS!!!

Damned right WCO would be bad for Newton. Can't hit the broad side of a barn between 4-12 yards away. Maybe the wind vane.

Shula can run the same offense we know and tweak it some. Mike Shula is the logical hire.

If you’re contemplating Shurmur, why not interview Serena Williams, Tom Cruise or Carrot Top as well? They don’t have any business being the Panther’s OC either.
