Panthers under salary cap after releasing Gamble

The Panthers made their big, long-anticipated move to get below the salary cap Friday, cutting veteran cornerback Chris Gamble after nine seasons in Charlotte.

Releasing Gamble puts the Panthers about $4 million under the $123 million salary cap. Teams have until Tuesday's start of the league year to be below the cap.

Gamble, who will turn 30 next week, had a cap figure of $7.9 million.

Gamble, a first-round pick in 2004, has been the team's top cover corner. But he's missed time due to injuries two of the past three seasons, including 12 games in 2012 following a season-ending shoulder injury.

Gamble is the Panthers' franchise leader with 27 career interceptions and his 117 regular-season starts are the most by a cornerback in team history.

β€œI appreciate the contributions of Chris during my first two years as head coach and to the organization for many years,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a release. β€œHe always handled things the right way and we wish him the best.”

Class A guy who kept his mouth shut and played football. Always played great coverage and never dissapointed us in any way. No Panther fan should ever have any hard feelings toward this guy. Good luck Chris!

Chris, you can thank Mr. Marty Hurney for this one. I really wonder what his "plan" was or did he just assume he wasn't going to be around to try to clean up his own mess?

No doubt he will find work quickly. Corners with his ball-skills will always be in demand.

Thanks CG.

The "fans" who disrespect Gamble are doing an injustice to his tenure as a Panther. Never caused problems and did whatever he was asked to do (cover the top WR, return duties). He was a top flight CB for a few yrs in the league, which is more than most guys can say. If not for injury who knows how it would have worked out...

Good luck to Chris Gamble and thanks for the service!

i'm surprised looking back he doesn't have a single reception or carry on offense in the NFL after being a 2 way player all of college. he's older now, but that didn't stop troy brown from playing defense at age 35. Watch the patriots pick him up too.

That was a GREAT move. He was the worst CB, the Panthers had.

LET'S get some WR's, because SMITTY is getting OLD.

Some other team will take a gamble on him.

There are 3 distinct plays that stand out to me over the years that just blew me away from a purely talent and athleticism standpoint..Gamble owns two of them.

Thanks for all your efforts in Carolina! You will be missed & Best of luck!

Great dude. It's been a good run. He deserves a better team. He's seen some real stinkers here.

For the past 3 years:
- 1 interception for every 8 games
- 2 tackles per game
- 0 fumbles forced
- 0 fumbles recovered
- less than 1 pass defended per game
- pay of $500,000 per game

Well, at least this Ohio State bum didn't break any laws...YET! Give it time, as all former Buckeye players end up with a criminal record.

Good riddance, Gamble. Armanti, you are next to be cut!
