Beason on moving positions: It's about winning a ring

Veteran Panthers linebacker Jon Beason said today on NFL Network's NFL AM that he knows he has the ability to play outside linebacker after spending nearly his career in Carolina at middle.

Beason has spent almost the entire past two seasons on injured reserve, and last year, he lost his spot at middle linebacker to Defensive Rookie of the Year Luke Kuechly.

But the three-time Pro Bowler said it's less about pride and more about what the team can do as he enters the latter half of his career.

"Going into my seventh year, you think about things like legacy and all of that stuff becomes important to you," Beason said. "But it’s really about winning a ring. When my career is over, I want to win a ring. I’ve done great things, big things but I also know I have the ability to play outside. Watching Luke, watching him mature and make plays and seeing how dynamic he is, I just want to get out there and do the same thing.

"We can be scary good with that front we have, Thomas Davis. We could be the best in the league and that’s the goal, so I want to be a part of the best defense and win championships, starting with one first obviously.”

He said he's "probably ahead of schedule" for his return to the field. He's almost to the point where he can train again, and he believes he'll be ready for training camp come late July.

Beason started at middle linebacker for the first four games of the season but became less effective as the weeks went on. Nagging shoudler and knee injuries forced him to have scopes on both areas during the year and he was placed on injured reserve for a second consecutive season.

"What I learned was to be in the moment," Beason said of the injuries. "If you can appreciate the grind, the training camps, the moments that you do have, the tough times, you can do big things. So for me, everything is just being near-sighted and winning the day.”

Beason also discussed quarterback Cam Newton's body language as he enters his third year as the offensive leader of the team, the decision to keep coach Ron Rivera for a third year and what it's like to play for owner Jerry Richardson.

He said the team must have a higher sense of urgency in training camp if the Panthers want to come out of the gate hot rather than struggle for the first half of the season and win late like they have the past two seasons.

“Guys can’t miss reps in training camp; I haven’t taken a rep in training camp in two years," Beason said. "It can’t take [until] mid-season to hit your stride; you have to have that mentality right away. We’ll do that this year but you have to appreciate training camp for what it is. Go in with a mentality to work every day, get better and hit it running Week One.”

HAHAHAHA, funny stuff Beason. Where are you planning on winning that ring?

Four winning seasons in 18 years. You would have a better chance in Detroit, Cincinnati or Oakland. No way the Pussy Cats win a single game in division next year.

4-12

Look, it's an internet troll!

SMH. Why Panthers? You tried this little experiment moving Beason to the outside. He is TERRIBLE at all the LB positions EXCEPT MIDDLE which is already occupied by a HEALTHY, defensive ROY in Keek.

Just call it quits. Your not the same Beason you were seven years ago. You haven't played a full season in two years.

Who is this clown that lacks optimism? He/she lacks optimism, he didn't say we're going to get a ring this season. We must give our new GM a chance to out a team together. Given Beason's contract, it's possible we could see a ring in a few years.

U guys are lame. Beason was one of the best in the league prior to his injury 2 seasons ago. Look at fantasy defensive points. He is a productive mofo when healthy. Sadly he hasn't been the last 2 years. He blew his Achilles trying to cover for a blown safety read. Tried to save a TD. If healthy we will have an exceptional lb core. F you losers who say otherwise. He did well as outside lb darsh.

Jon Beason was seen at the local jewelry store recently. One can only assume he wants that ring!
Now we know why Beason won't take that pay cut; he has to buy his own ring. Jon, you did not mean a Super Bowl ring, did you? Dude, you'll have to leave town to get one of those...or get lucky on E-Bay.
Thanks to you not taking a pay cut, Jon, the Panthers don't have a lot to look forward to in 2013. Perhaps a winning record.

Hey Ty, the only troll here is YOU! Everyone else here is aware that the Panthers aren't going to the playoffs...except YOU!

I love that some guy above said look at Beason's "fantasy defensive points" in trying to defend him.

Well here in the real world that most of us live in, the guy is just no good anymore and has no desire to play the game unless it's a contract year. There really is no coincidence between him getting that huge contract and his lack of performance since then. He's the highest paid cheerleader in the league.

The title of this should have been "Beason on moving positions: That's what happens when you lose a step and only play for money"

also Jonathan Jones...

thank you for not censoring your blog and deleting simple, G or PG-rated comments like Joe Person does. i'm surprised Mike Persinger allows Joe to do that. Censorship at it's finest over there.

People commenting on this clearly aren't fans and don't give a flying fuck about the Panthers at all. Beason is good LB,and even more so a good leader. If you don't think that Carolina has a chance at winning a superb owl in the next three years then you clearly haven't watched a single game except the Giants on Thursday night football.

did papa jerry get his money from the taxpayers to put in more escalators with?

i need to know

Why is there so much negativity here. Carolina can a will get back to the winning ways. I have been a Carolina fan from day one and that will never change. When they went 1-15 I was still pulling for my team, all the negative stuff needs to stop, because we all true panther fans need to get behind this team. And when we start winning, don't jump on the band wagon because they people posting all this negative crap never was a true panther fan. I love this team with all my heart. Panther fan for life, no matter what , unless they move and that would be heart breaking for me. Keep Pounding and stay positive, because I know we can turn this thing around.

Beason's best days are behind him, but he's still capable of delivering a good season or two, maybe three. And with a little more Gettleman magic, the Panthers may get him a ring after all. When the Panthers are on (see Panthers vs. Falcons, Nov. 2012 for example), they can be great. It's the consistency that needs work, and that's what is missing (see Matty Ice's career for an example of inconsistency). Put it together for a whole season, and the playoffs are a sure bet. Fear the Cat!

You dumb fucks. panthrsnation

I believe that Beason can make a big comeback this year but his days as the "beast" in the middle are over. If he can adapt and other factors come into play, then the Panthers can make a run at the playoffs. A ring is possible but a slow start will doom this team again.

There's a lot of trolls and assclowns on this thread. Here is breaking news for you! Jon Beason of the Carolina Panthers IS RESTRUCTURING HIS CONTRACT THIS WEEK. He's following Gross in a contract extension and taking a pay cut to free up money for the future. Now go talk smack about someone else you think is past there prime and greedy. He's always been a first class guy, and that won't change. The front office was dealing with one thing at a time.

I want a D@MN ring too Beason!!!!!! Make it happen this year!!!!!!!!

Posted by: MB | Apr 3, 2013 7:46:45 PM

Beason, we all want a ring. How about we just start with you staying healthy for 16 games as the first goal?

Posted by: John | Apr 3, 2013 8:00:14 PM

The reason so many people are negative on this board is that their lives are made up of a string of pitiful failures. You know how it is...when you're a loser in life, career, parenting, and marriage you just want to bring everyone else down. It will be these same idiots that jump up and down and act like the best fans ever win the Panthers are winning again. That's how losers behave.

4 Winning seasons in Panthers History.

Let's start there, shall we? Oh, and players unwilling to take pay cuts, LIKE JON BEASON, so that this Panthers team is unable to even compete in free agency.

Yet, people who do not follow football, like JD, Logan, and SkitzO, are clueless as to the reasons why the Panthers fail year after year. You girls need to stay in the kitchen and worry about getting the tailgate food ready for the real football fans. You faith, hope, prayers, and beliefs are not going to mean anything on the field.
Once again, IF this 2013 Panthers team ends up with a winning record, it will only be it's 5th in 19 seasons. By the way, that is utterly PATHETIC! As a Panthers fan that moved to Charlotte specifically because this city got a NFL Franchise, I expect more.

Losers are ones that back a team when their Management gives them an inferior product and they don't demand the best.

GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: L.T | Apr 3, 2013 8:46:56 PM

He wants to win a ring, who doesn't. So if you really want that ring, restructure your contract and take a pay cut from that huge salary you made from the sidelines. Give the Cats more cap space to go out and sign the players required to make a run.....be a leader and lead by example, like some of your team mates-- now THAT would be a class act.
