Panthers considering Eifert for first-round pick
While most of the pre-draft speculation has focused on the Panthers taking a defensive tackle with the 14th pick, they are also giving strong consideration to Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert, the Observer has learned.
The thinking is Carolina could pair Eifert with Greg Olsen in the two-tight end sets that were so effective for the Panthers in 2011 with Olsen and Jeremy Shockey.
At 6-5 and 250 pounds, Eifert looks the part of the new breed of pass-catching tight ends. He often split out wide at Notre Dame, and he ran the 40-yard dash at the combine in 4.68 seconds.
Eifert also bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times in Indianapolis, and had a 35.5-inch vertical jump.
The Panthers have more pressing needs at defensive tackle and in the secondary, although first-year general manager Dave Gettleman is a believer in the “best player available” approach.
Since drafting Cam Newton No. 1 overall two years ago, coach Ron Rivera has talked repeatedly about surrounding the franchise quarterback with additional play-makers.
It's possible the Panthers could be using the Eifert buzz as a smokescreen.
There's also a chance Eifert won't be available to Carolina at 14. At least one draft expert -- the NFL Network's Mike Mayock -- has Eifert going to the Jets at 13.

Losing Jeremy Shockey was the main reason Cam regressed. I actually love the idea of replacing him, just not sure how Eifert would mesh with Olsen as they are the same player in my mind. I say pick up some big guy who can run 8 yards, turn around, and catch in the 3rd round.

This is what I expect. The Panthers brass will draft a TE first, then a punter or RB. We have the biggest joke of a front office/ownership in the league. 4 winning years out of 17 speaks for itself. It matters not who we draft, as long as the Big Rat owns the team the Panthers are doomed.

If Gettleman takes a TE or WR 1st he needs fired immediately.

LOL. I'm sure they are considering him. I'd bet there are, say, roughly 14 players they are considering with the 14th pick...

Cam didn't regress. He improved in almost every aspect of a quarterbacks game.

Typical panther front office moves
Posted by: wesley | Apr 25, 2013 2:02:41 PM
1) Sheldon Richardson DT
2) David Amerson CB
4) TJ McDonald S
5) Reid Fragel OT
6) Rodney Smith WR
Carolina should draft like this...TE is just a smoke screen.

I think it's only a smokescreen. We need to trade Williams for a 3rd and take a risk on the RB for south Carolina. I think they want WR Austin or S from Texas. Than a DT in the second. The DT that makes the most sense is Williams from Alabama. His a run stopper and big plus is the opposite of Edwards.

Tempting, but no. There has to be an App State player in the draft that I can take in the first round.

1- Tavon Austin/DeAndre Hopkins
2- DJ Swearinger

Sounds like a huge smokescreen someone will jump for him early. Anyone that believes this is an idiot. We are going OL, DT, or DB with that pick.

What a dumb idea that would be.....that's what you call a reach.
Anyway, I'm pretty Ron Rivera wants to draft Manti Te'o first anyway if he has anything to do with it. He'll make Beason sprain his ankle so that way they put him on the IR

Not a bad idea, but I'd prefer Austin over a TE if he were available. This draft just has so much line depth, why not wait a round got DT. I've always been a fan of the best player approach, and if we could get a heir apparent to Smitty, so much the better.

I have not sent in my PSL payment yet. Taking a TE in the first round would be a potential dealbreaker.

If they wanted a stud TE they should have drafted Dewayne Allen last year. Drafting a ND player is a wasted pick.

Two TE sets are deadly and could open up the running game. Drafting Eifert would be great. It's a lot of DT the team can draft in the 2nd. Then take safety or WR in the 4th or 5th. Kicker from FSU in the 6th.

Eifert is a baller for those who don't know. He is like having Cam Newton on the field catching passes.
Personally I wouldn't be mad at picking up Eifert at all. I'm betting he's the next great TE.

I LIKE THE IDEA ACTUALLY.... YOU DONT DRAFT FOR POSITIONAL NEED YOU DRAFT BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE. THATS WHAT THE GIANTS HAVE DONE AND THAT SUPPOSED TO BE GETTLEMAN'S PEDIGREE. WE WERE SUCESSFUL W/ THE 2 TE SET AND THIS GUY PLAYS LIKE A WR FOR THOSE STILL WANTING AUSTIN.... DONT SEE HOW THIS IS A BAD IDEA. MAYBE NOT MY FIRST OPTION BUT NOT TERRIBLE

I think Eifert is better than any of the WR prospects and would be a great add, I'd prefer DJ Fluker though, please no Vacarro or Sheldon R.
