Panthers take D-II guard Edmund Kugbila in fourth round

With the No. 108 overall selection, the Panthers got another line pusher.

Only this time, he plays offense.

After doubling up on defensive tackles in the first two rounds, the Panthers took Valdosta State's Edmund Kugbila with the 11th pick in the fourth round.

The 6-foot-4, 317-pound Kugbila ran a 5.13 40-time at his pro day and had 24 reps at 225 pounds.

He's the first draft pick from Valdosta State since 1997. He was born in Ghana and moved to the United States at age 10.

Valdosta State won the 2012 Division-II national championship in December with a 35-7 win against Winston-Salem State.

Kugbila should compete with second-year Amini Silatolu, last year's starter at left guard, on the line this offseason.

He's not going to compete with Silatolu. He'll play the other side.

Great draft this year Gettleman actually filled the needs on the Dline now with plenty of depth up front If we can get a solid S in the 5th I'll be stoked!

We drafted a 7th rounder or UDFA in the 4th. Why?

Posted by: Byrd | Apr 27, 2013 1:31:03 PM

Project 7th rounder or FA. Could have gotten him later.

Already better than any of Hurney's draft Gettleman didn't trade any picks away ,and filled in that void the team has had for years on the DL ,and a nice starter at OG to go with Silatolu ,and now a S/LB this will be a GREAT draft.

Solid draft by Gettleman all the haters are all offense lovers which is fine until next year when that side will be addressed.

Nice job by DG ,If he gets a DB ,and a LB were GOLD this year ,and Cam better come through this year or next year DG will draft his QB this is Cam's 3rd year which is boom or bust we'll see.

wth.... 52 rating in the 4th round?

Posted by: i cant believe it | Apr 27, 2013 1:40:07 PM

I've never heard of the guy, so I'll trust the Panthers' scouts. Apparently he was recruited by Alabama, Georgia and Florida but didn't have the SEC scores to qualify. Which seems understandable if he didn't move to the US until he was 10.

Great draft by the new GM even handcuff by Hurney's throwin picks away with just 5.
I can't wait until he gets 7 picks again...Just get a Safety!

Dave Gettleman should've been here years ago! GREAT job DG!

Another another giant leap to mediocrity!

Why? This guy? Just axin. Hope the staff is right about this one. Do not need to fire blanks in this draft.

Several guards and centers rated above him... guess the Panthers experts know something others don't? lol

You must be crazy thinking we would draft Cam replacement after 3 years that hasn't been all his fault.

Byrd ,GM's like there own guy's NO EXCUSES year 3 is it for QB's it's a CONTRACT year ,If Cam don't make the playoffs he's DONE here ,and you know it...13-19 you gotta be better than that with a probowl TE/WR/RB ,and 2 probowl OL ,so NO more excuses!

Posted by: TWIGGY | Apr 27, 2013 1:51:25 PM

YOU got it RIGHT Twiggy no more excuses for towel head pouter boi!

I agree with Rob in NC ,year 3 is it ,so no more what IF's with Cam the diva!

i hope he can play left tackle. that's the weak link that no one wants to talk about. when seattle beat us the last time we were in the playoffs -- the took advantage of left tackle. when they beat us last year same story. you name a big loss and i'll show you where the left tackle gets the heck beat out of him. please put a competitive left tackle in the mix.
