Cam down 12 pounds after offseason challenge

There is less of Cam Newton this season, and perhaps more big plays as a result.

The Panthers' third-year quarterback said Wednesday he's dropped 12 pounds since the end of last season, going from 255 to 243 as of Tuesday.

“But we're going to see what I weigh in today because I had hot wings last night,” Newton said, drawing laughter at a post-OTA press conference.

The 6-foot-5 Newton, who has missed only a handful of plays during his first two seasons, said the weight loss was a personal challenge and not in response to his performance or health.

“It was just a personal goal that I set for myself. I'm not going to go into what it really meant because looking at my body from afar you really couldn't tell,” Newton said. “Being that I lost the weight, nobody really could tell, either. It's just me challenging myself to have an edge going into the season.”

Newton has been in good shape since the Panthers drafted him No. 1 overall in 2011.

Now he's in better shape.

As for the Panthers' offense, Newton said the verbiage has been simplified under new coordinator Mike Shula, who was elevated from QBs coach after Rob Chudzinski left to become Cleveland's head coach.

Other than some of the nomenclature, Newton said the offense would look much like it did under Chudzinski.

Good to see Cam always look for for ways to better himself and this team.... Now if we can just get Steve Smith to stop giving Cornerbacks body-to-body suplexes every play, then our offense wouldn't have to lose 15 yards all the time.

I told him he could not eat at Denny's anymore.

Its a shame the man is so underpaid, he wears a black skull cap, or whatever it is, to represent his team, city and self...classy...

err dang it, meant that feelings not the playoffs. (needs a new keyboard and mouse)

He will lose a lot more than a few pounds this season. No way the Kitty Kats win a single game in the great (other than the Panthers) NFC South. The rest of the schedule offers up just three wins as I see. Now before you jump on the prediction, I was exactly correct two years ago, predicting six wins and was only one off last year predicting six again. This year we lost key members of the team and have lost much ground in off season pick ups and drafts.

Enjoy your last two seasons here Cam. Anyone who knows anything about football knows you are running from here as fast as you can when your rookie contract is completed.

Hey, "I care not," The Panthers play 16 games in the regular season.

You just lost ALL credibility. Now, run home and cheer for your own NFL team, whether it be the 'Aints, the Dirty Birds, or the Yuckin' for Years. Or, given your ability to add, you're probably a Cowboys fan.

Newton losing 12 pounds will only help him slide in and around the pocket. Good move on his part.

"nomenclature"...had to look that one up.

Posted by: deez | May 29, 2013 4:42:07 PM

can we get some insight into who the key pieces are that we lost?

james anderson is the only one. and we got beason back + blackburn and klein to compensate.

who else did we lose? sherrod martin? gary barnidge? chris gamble hardly played last year so we lost him last year not this offseason. who else? ron edwards?

who am I missing?

Doesn't matter tells you what they really know. They watch either National sports media or 6:00 sports on local stations.

I've been jacked in the past, but I am more jacked about the Defense than the "O". With Shula going to run the ball more than 8 to 10 times a game(surely he will), Massive improvement right there. This team is starting to look like a rival of 2003 team better QB. defensive Secondary is going to be fun to watch not just front 7.
All you posting under dumb names and Not, just hide and watch. Bet your ass this front 7 is coming after all your QBs out there. Hide and watch!

Did he lose those 12 pounds off his big head? Why is he wearing that stupid looking cap? He looks a little bleary-eyed in that picture, and his grin is a bit lopsided. Maybe that cap's cutting off circulation to his brain.

Week 1 Seattle game is a must win!

The Panthers are finishing either 9-7 or 10-6, barring any major injuries in 2013.

Okay, I'll answer the "cap" questions since it seems to be a concern and is foreign to some of you ...When you're a black guy and you have short hair..its called a FADE (FAY-D). If you add a substance called pomade (you can call it hair grease) and brush your hair religiously, it creates ripples that we in the black community call "WAVES". Women love it. The thing about waves however, is that you can't wear hats or in Cam's case, a helmet, without some type of silk or nylon to keep the hair in its desired wave pattern. Some people prefer a nylon scarf that is often referred to as a "du rag". The thing about "du rags" is they have a long piece of fabric in the back that covers the neck. Cam Newton has decided to go with the alternative, also known as a "wave cap", presumably because it lacks the long piece of fabric in the back and can fit comfortably under his helmet. Lets face it, the kid has great hair and maintains his swag at all times. I hope thats ok with everyone here. Thank you ..I'll be here all month with similar nuggets of African American culture. lol In short, he's not a thug. I know thugs. They don't play football for a living, trust me.

Panthers 1995 has obviously had his head stuck up his rectum, as Cam has improved, while the O-Line is healthy once again. a strong running game and a decent passing attack. The Defensive Front 7 has now been solidified, so the Secondary will not be picked apart quite as easily.
Could the Panthers finish 9-7? Absolutely. Either way, I do NOT expect them to earn a playoff berth. The Saints were the WORST Defensive team in the NFL and no one is sold on the Bucs. The Falcons have holes on the O-Line and question marks all over the Defense.
Obviously, Panthers 1995 is in charge of the tailgating and munchies. Hey Alice, go get us more Brewskis!
Rae Carruth, I didn't know they allowed murderers access to the internet. You've been confined for so long, you probably are looking forward to touring the Twin Towers when you get out.
John Fox...it is what it is.

In the first half of the 2013-14 season the interior defense was gashed, the secondary was torched, the special teams gave very little effort, the read-option was used too much minus a conventional running game, and Rivera was still learning how to game manage. That being said, the Panthers could have easily won four more games if not for one huge mistake in each of those four games and made the playoffs. In my opinion, they addressed some of the areas of weakness in the offseason and are getting players back from injuries who played very little or not at all last season. This team should compete for a playoff spot.
