Keiser biggest name among Panthers' 5 cuts

Several hours after being cut by the Panthers on Monday morning, defensive end Thomas Keiser said he expects to land on his feet.

Perhaps literally.

Keiser was the most surprising of the Panthers' first wave of cuts following their rookie minicamp during the weekend. Offensive lineman Zack Williams, a sixth-round pick in 2011, and three undrafted rookies also were released – linebacker Damario Jeffery, tight end Taylor Cook and Sam Houston State wideout Trey Diller.

Williams' release leaves the Panthers with just three of their picks left from the '11 draft – quarterback Cam Newton, defensive tackle Sione Fua and receiver/returner Kealoha Pilares.

Undrafted out of Stanford in 2011, Keiser tied Greg Hardy for second on the team with four sacks as a rookie.

But injuries to both elbows limited Keiser to four games last fall, when Hardy had a breakout season with 11 sacks.

The 6-4 Keiser, who played between 262-265 pounds, is a bit of a tweener. He played defensive end in a 4-3 scheme early in his college career before moving to outside linebacker when the Cardinal switched to a 3-4.

Keiser said he was preparing to play both positions for the Panthers this season, and could well end up with a 3-4 team.

“When I said good-bye to coach (Ron) Rivera, he said getting up in a 2-point stance could work out for me,” Keiser said.

Rivera said he expects to sign as many five players from the pool of 36 who tried out during the rookie camp. The list includes kicker Jordan Gay and defensive lineman Linden Gaydosh, both of whom have said they signed with the Panthers.

You can't cut Pickles what if Anderson and me go down. Who is going to take this team by the horns???

I think we should pick up TBOW and cut PICKLES. I need to have a break out year this year fellas if I want the big money.. If I dont play well no one is going to sign me to big money. I will be another could've been. I need the Defense to Play Hard ever play not just the linebackers and hardy and johnson but everyone. I also need one else beside steve smith to run a good route. Deangelho needs to run like he did before he signed for big money.

What is it with Tebow? Why hasn't someone called this man and talked to him about converting to a Tight End. Good running ability after catch...decent speed...good size.

What is so great about this Jordan Gay if he can only hit 50% of his field goals in college? Camp Leg at best. Graham Gano is not the answer either. The Panthers have brought in nothing but stiffs since John Kasay was cut. Dave Gettleman needs to find and sign a kicker for the long term. There are no candidates for that on the current roster.

TBOW would be a good fit here in the charlotte area, he could start a megachurch like elevation or some of the big ones we have had in the past. not sure if he would be of much use in football gear, he could do the prayer before games.

That's what we need....more corporate religion in Charlotte. Escalators and bookstores in the building...big business on a tax free basis. What a crock.

Another quality player let go for no good reason. This team is being setup to fail. Well as long as we are making money, right Jerry?

Did you miss the part about injuries to both elbows?

Posted by: Star | May 13, 2013 2:06:11 PM

hurt limbs never stopped hurney from giving players huge contracts....Beason and Davis are bionic men that are fragile.

glad g-man dropped this weak elbowed player, get some players that aren't walking rebuilds.

I think Quan Sturdivant would be a good pick up LB out of UNC

I saw Keiser make plays. He and Neblitt have stood out more than Fua, imo. I think we should have kept him through training camp and see how he stacked up.

Sad to see this quality player go. Keiser played very well when called upon. I hope he lands on another team soon.

Dump Clausen, and let AE work out as the #3 QB. He's got the arm and knows the play book. He's not in the top 2 at any position, but plays at a respectable level as WR, KR an PR. Let him get some reps in camp as #3 QB, and we have a well-rounded utility guy that can fill in a pinch if and when needed.

Claussen needs to go. Probably has smarts but cannot translate that to on field performance. AE is a sentimental favorite and his advocates claim that he has not been given enough snaps, chances, time etc. This is not going to work out folks. Need to let him go. IF he is that good advocates, he will hang somewhere else. Good for him if it happens.

Hey! Plenty of hotels, motels and house rentals at the Carolina coast! Take a break. Hurney is no longer destroying the product. Good riddance to Fox also. Burgers are on the grill. Later
