Panthers' No. 89 is 84th on NFL list

Pro Bowl wideout Steve Smith is the first Panthers' player to be featured on the NFL Network's countdown of the league's top 100 players.

Smith was rated the league's 84th-best player Thursday night when the network unveiled the players ranked 90th through 81st on its list.

According to the announcer doing the voiceover, Smith's 49-spot drop in the rankings had more to do with the Panthers' continued struggles than a lack of respect among Smith's peers.

Several of those peers were interviewed during the three-minute spot on Smith. But teammate Jon Beason had some of the most interesting comments about No. 89.

"First off, Steve has a chip on his shoulder," Beason said. "All the things he's accomplished, he has not taken that chip off his shoulder."

And later, this from Beason: "To me, he's the best player ever to wear a Panthers' uniform. He brings it (with) toughness every single game, and he's just the most confident player I've ever been around."

I scared to think what life would be like without 89 on our side for the past 10 years. If we've been this bad with him, it gives me chills to think how much we'd suck without him!

We need more players with chips on their shoulder and some swagger. Team is weak.

I wanna see Smith pop Cam in the mouth if he sulks this year, tell him to perform on the field.

Let's hope Smith doesn't get into any wrestling matches this year with those cornerbacks that he's suppose to "block" on run plays lol.
What does the Panthers "struggles" have to do with Smith still being one of the best WR's in the NFL? He still got his yards and Cam still looked for him often, despite double, even triple teamed. That's BS. He deserves to be in the top 50 easily.

It's good to see a Panther make the top 100 list, yes Steve should have been some where in the middle but because he plays on the Panthers no one from another team would put him where he actually belongs. The Panther's are the red headed step child of the NFL.I believe there will be only a few Panther's on this list. The only way we are going to get some respect from the players, media and fans is too win, win, win and win!!!!!!!GO PANTHER'S

Steve smith should thank lays for all the chips

poll the coaches and he's probably top 15.

there's no way he's 84 in the league currently. 50 maybe. but 84 is way too low. dude is currently 23rd ALL TIME in receiving yards. he could be as high as 15th after this season.

he's 34 this year but I wouldn't put it past him to be able to put in 4 more solid years and retire at age 37 somewhere top 5 all-time. you can only imagine what he would have done if 1 - he had played receiver from day 1. 2 - had a quarterback every year he played (no clausen, testaverde, peete years) and 3 - didn't miss 2004 to the broken leg.

give that man a statue. helluva player. worth price of admission on his own.

I agree with D.M.G his ratings shoulding reflect the team's performance.Like the man said we have to win. They snubbed us on the pro bowl. We are not going to get respect until we win the Super Bowl.

Second-best player to put on a Panthers uniform. Sam Mills is first, and that's no knock on No. 89.

#84 on this list. #1 in dumb celebrations after a 4 yard catch that comes after a drop.

Top 5 ALL-Time. I got to watch Walter Payton's career while in Chicago. Best ever, in my book. Now I got to watch you. Thanks Steve.

How good would steve had been and would be if he had a QB ???

he's top 10 right now....would be top 5 if we had a good passing QB

Posted by: big gulps | May 6, 2013 10:12:55 AM

Someone tell him that age is gonna get him so he can use his anger to stay young forever! :)

In my opinion Steve is one of the best players in the league in that he seems to give it his absolute best on every play, even in games that are meaningless. If we had 53 dudes of that makeup we would be in the playoffs EVERY year.
