Panthers sign Short to 4-year deal

The Panthers have half of their rookie defensive tackle tandem under contract.

Second-round pick Kawann Short has signed with Carolina, the team announced Wednesday. Short is the first of the Panthers' five picks to sign.

Terms of the deal were undisclosed, but all rookie contracts are four years under the collective bargaining agreement.

In his first draft as the Panthers' general manager, Dave Gettleman took Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and Short with the first two picks. Short started four years at Purdue, finishing with 19.5 sacks and a school-record eight blocked kicks.

“We are very pleased to have Kawann under contract,” Gettleman said in a release. “We felt he was the best pass-rushing defensive tackle in the draft, and we are excited about what he can bring to our defensive front.”

Lotulelei and Short will be part of a rotation that also includes veteran Dwan Edwards, who re-signed with the Panthers after finishing with a career-high six sacks in 2012.

Our front 7 is going to be pretty good this year if everyone stays healthy. Cant wait for one of these guys to give Matty Choke a hit so hard he tells his own team to get the F off the field.

This recent draft appears to highlight a multi-year approach by new GM. No way he can find all perfect-fit players in a single draft / free agency period to restore the Panthers to playoff wins, but he can over 2 or 3 drafts. He also looks at the talent presented at the draft, and determined based on where we drafted, the best for the team is to stock up on the "hog molly" picks. This DL and LB crew is going to be a force to deal with. Let the DB coaches coach. The GM sees enough talent there not to address it with what would probably would have been a wasted pick. Then, next year, we go after DB's in earnest in the early rounds. Go Panthers!

I still can't get over the fact that we only drafted one potential starter in this draft.

So if you combine that we only have one starter from the 2011 draft and one starter from the 2013 draft... our future is looking quite bleak. Especially since Gettlemen is only signing reserves.

Usually I am quite optimistic about the Panthers from a talent perspective. However, this is certainly shaping up to be a very concerning offseason. We only acquired 1 obvious starter (Star).

I certainly hope I am wrong.

Drafts aren't always about finding a starter with every pick (though obviously that would be great if you could), sometimes it is just finding quality backups and special teamer's who could start if needed but who are going to be more useful on STs and practice squads throughout the year.

Fingers crossed the 2 DT's this year turn out better than Fua and McClain.

Agree with manu4t,If our defense stays healthy, We should be able to cause problems for the high praised, yet well deserved qbs of the nfc south. My only concern would be our secondary, but great upfront pressure, should hide that, with these big boys.

With the signing of Drayton Florence, the Secondary will be able to hold its own, especially with the push from the front four. This will give the opportunity for the Linebackers to stunt more, drop back into coverage and create more turnovers. The Defense should be much more aggressive and opportunistic with the new "Hog Mollies" on the line.
It will be up to Shula, Cam, and the O Line to be solid and score points.

No trade ups in the draft was a refreshing change. Those never worked out in the past.

but in 2012 we landed.......4 starters (1 ROY), 2 potential starters (campbell and alexander) and 1 return man who has shown flashes AND fumbles in adams. nearly a perfect draft if adams had panned out better.

it comes and goes.

not sure you can say we only landed 1 starter in this draft just because short might be listed as 2nd team with edwards under contract. It's just as likely short starts as it is edwards. and it's highly likely short starts eventually since edwards is only on a 2 year deal and is 32.

you don't always want to start a bunch of rookies. we've seen that the past 2 years. it's a young man's game, but not THAT young. 3rd year guys is what you want and we have a ton of them this year.

ROY in 2012 was kuechly. Cam was 2011. and cam just had a very solid season last year. our offense was fine. defense was fine. special teams and coaching was deplorable.

12th total offense 10th total defense yet 18th in points allowed and scored. head scratcher it is. only person gone after this year would be rivera.
