Munnerlyn joins Davis, believes Panthers can be one of best defenses in 2013

Carolina defensive back Captain Munnerlyn said this week on WFNZ that he believes the Panthers can be the top defense in the NFL.

His comments followed one week after LB Thomas Davis told Scott Fowler that he thinks Carolina can be one of the best defenses in the league, and Munnerlyn was asked if he agreed.

"It'll be scary how good we can be," Munnerlyn said. "I'm excited about this year. I feel like we can be the top defense in the NFL."

The Panthers finished 10th last year in total defense and fourth in the NFC, and the additions of Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short, along with a healthy Davis and Jon Beason to start the season, does nothing but help their potential ranking for next season.

But questions linger about the team's secondary. There's no clear-cut starter in the defensive backfield except Charles Godfrey at free safety. A number of players including Munnerlyn, Josh Norman, Josh Thomas, Drayton Florence, James Dockery and D.J. Moore could start at either cornerback position while the strong safety spot is also up in the air.

Last year the Panthers had the worst opponent completion percentage (66.8) of any team in the league, tied for 23rd in interceptions (11) and 23rd in quarterback rating per game (91.7).

"Nobody (is) really giving us a chance in the secondary to be great," Munnerlyn said. "For me, being a leader in the secondary, this is my opportunity to step up and be that guy."

Munnerlyn suffered an abdominal strain at the start of organized team activities and sat out nearly all of spring workouts. He expects to be back by training camp, where he will compete for his nickel back position with Moore.

Well Captain, if you were practicing against a real NFL QB you may have a good reference point to make that statement. As is, you practice with a really talented mediocre performing QB in Cammie Newton. You have no clue as to what real QB's will do to this group. Good luck, and go Bills.

LOL a Bills fan talking about needing a real QB

Posted by: shadrock_t | Jun 26, 2013 10:09:20 AM

FoReal, I don't know what's funnier about that comment- the fact that it's coming from a Bills fan who hasn't had a decent QB since Dougie Flutes or that you are considering Cam mediocre after his record setting freshman and soph. years.

As an article in the Yardbarker about the Panthers stated a couple of days ago, these guys need to SHUTUP and JUST play football! Don't spout off touting how good/great you THINK that you are going to be. Let your play speak for itself. Need we remind the entire Panthers team what was posted in the Newspaper last year about the Super Bowel? In the words of Elvis P., A little less talk and a lot more action. So, Shut up and play.

Justin, what fantasy land are you living in? Cam's record speaks for itself. He is the worst QB in the NFC South. He is in the second half of the league. Not my opinion, it's fact. Keep sniffing his jock though, it's all you have in your life.

Posted by: FoReal | Jun 26, 2013 10:38:28 AM

Haha. A Bills fan talking smack about QB's!!!!!!!!! I needed that this morning!

Is this like the same genius STATEMENT Ryan Kalil made last year whewn he said the cats would win the super bowl? I wonder why ESPN or any other sports outlet even has the panthers in the top 10 of defenses, yet there knuckleheads are predicting the cats will be #1. Now I know they're not going to say "we suck," but I certainly hope no one is believing these boneheads. Let's see where you are after the bye week or when your record is 4-4.

HAHAHA! Are you excluding Josh Freeman from your analysis? Granted he isn't the best in the NFC South, but he's not the worse. He can only do as well as his defense (and let's hope these guys do shut and just play).

As for the Bills, I really hope that EJ project works out for you or the Kolb experience pans out.

Panthers will be 8-8 and Luke Kuechly and Charles Johnson will make the pro bowl. Those are the only 2 defensive players who will stand out. Enough said!

To the poster @10:59..... espn has the panthers def rated #20,yahoo has them #22,and rotoworld #18.

EVERY DANG YEAR one or more of these guys start running their mouths about how good they can be. I swear it's on purpose just to sell tickets but they need to shut their mouths, play football, win games and brag after the season if the actually do anything. It was so refreshing to not have Mike Minter after he retired because it used to be him every year talking about how great they'd be. Last year it was Kalil with his cleats in his mouth and now the defense won't shut up. Just play football and show us what you can do. DANGIT!!!

our defense was respectable last year statistically. they will be upper echelon at worst (barring major injuries) this year.

health is always the key.

Ratings are just someone's opinions

The proof will be what happens in September...

Posted by: Yuppa! | Jun 26, 2013 11:49:06 AM

To be honest I'm sick of hearing Panthers players talk during the preseason about how great they're going to be. Just work hard and show the fans how great you are ON THE FIELD. It's good to be confident, but we want to see an actual productive season. No one in this city wants another 8-8 year without a playoff berth. Just get it done on the field when it counts instead of jawing in the locker room in front of a microphone.

Are we now going to be the Jets? All talk no walk? And Captain, seriously bro, I've linked it many times for the Charlotte Observer folks, Captain is one of the WORST CBs in the league. He has always had an astronomical completion % when QBs throw his way. He's also given up some of the BIGGEST plays year after year. You may be scrappy, but you also can't cover, and I can't even believe you will be our starting CB. YOU are going to cover Julion Jones and Roddy White 2x a year? O-M-G....

Posted by: Nuoc | Jun 26, 2013 1:18:14 PM

I agree with PanthersFan!! Year after year we get the same dog and pony show from players talking about how this coming season is going to be this or that, even ads claiming the year of the superbowl!!!! But each time its always the same. Enough of these articles and interviews! Show us on the field in September with wins!!!!

Posted by: Exactly! | Jun 26, 2013 1:18:54 PM

Last year Cam was ranked 15th out of 32 QBs in QB Ranking. Couple that with what he does on the ground I would consider him an above average QB (nothing more, nothing less)

Posted by: Dan | Jun 26, 2013 1:34:08 PM

I hope the team's on-the-field performance supports Captain's claim. I remember a full-page ad hyping last year's team.

9 - 7 finish = acceptable
Make the playoffs = Good season
Win 1 playoff game = Great season!
Below 9-7 = bad year.

I just wish Crash Davis was around to help the Panthers players learn their cliches. As it is, they keep saying things that make them look not-smart. Captain, Ryan...have you guys ever seen Bull Durham?! How about watching it and learning a thing or two about how to act.

Posted by: Greg | Jun 26, 2013 2:11:27 PM

Don't care what rank they start or finish. Just Win.

Posted by: Baconator | Jun 26, 2013 3:32:37 PM

Panthers defense greatly improved when Gamble retired.

Posted by: Lakemed | Jun 26, 2013 3:48:28 PM

Do your talkin' on the field, Cap. You haven't exactly been 'scary', at least in the good sense.

Posted by: Yonse | Jun 26, 2013 5:23:06 PM

Wait wait wait... the Bills have a fan? What manner of sick joke is this?

Posted by: Joseph | Jun 26, 2013 10:01:22 PM

Vinny, you beat me to it. I'm sick of this crap from the Panthers. PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!
