Beason takes pay cut in restructured deal

Panthers linebacker Jon Beason agreed to a significant pay cut this season, although Beason can recoup a lot of the money by staying healthy and remaining on the roster.

Under the terms of his restructured contract, Beason's base salary drops from $5.25 million to $1 million guaranteed, a league source with knowledge of the contract told the Observer on Friday.

Beason earns a $500,000 roster bonus Saturday, and can collect an additional $1.75 million in roster bonuses throughout the season. The contract also includes a $500,000 bonus if Beason makes the Pro Bowl a fourth time.

The restructuring drops Beason's cap figure from $9.5 million to $5.75 million, counting Saturday's roster bonus.

The rest of Beason's base salaries remained unchanged through the 2016 season, creating the potential for another restructuring next year when his cap figure is $10.75 million.

I've given him a lot of heck for underperforming on this contract, but respectable move by Beason here.

I don't get why people say Beason (and Gross) are such great guys for taking pay cuts. Surely they are basically being told to either renegotiate or be cut... It's insane to think that someone would take a $4 million pay cut if they had a choice otherwise.

The big story on the four letter network today concerned the Panthers opening day opponent Seattle Seahawks and their super-duper off season acquisition Percy Harvin’s injured hip. Will he play, won’t he play, surgery, no surgery, is it meaningless, is it the end of the world, an opportunity for the other guys, or the first crack in the Seahawk dam…?

Tom Pelissero who used to be the ESPN NFC North blogger (think: Minnesota Vikings) was on the radio with the Seattle local guys today and gave a very revealing 12:20 interview concerning Percy Harvin. Well worth your time if you're interested.

Thank you for your time, and now back to your local programming.

and I don't mean to blow up this Panther blog with Seahawk stuff, but here is a good example of what a local blog should look like.

how did he "underperform" on this contract?!

when he was healthy, he balled. he had some major injuries. 2 completely different things.
