Beason might be sidelined for training camp

A day after signing his restructured contract, Panthers veteran linebacker Jon Beason said he did so to help the team.

When Beason can help the Panthers on the practice field remains to be seen.

Beason said it's “quite possible” he won't practice during training camp following microfracture surgery on his right knee during the offseason.

Beason, who has missed all but five games the past two seasons due to injuries, said doctors have told him he will have to manage pain this year.

“So I'm going to have good days and bad days,” Beason said Thursday. “But you get it calmed down, you get it feeling good throughout the week and then by Sunday you feel pretty good. You go out there and wear on it, bang on it, then start over on Sunday.”

Beason said his goal is to be ready for the regular season opener against Seattle.

Beason has battled injuries since signing a five-year, $51.5 million contract extension in 2011 that made him the game's highest-paid middle linebacker at the time. He has since moved to the weak side with the emergence of Luke Kuechly in the middle.

Beason, who was scheduled to make $5.5 million this year, said he is still under contract through 2016 under the terms of his restructured deal. But he declined to divulge any specifics of his new contract.

I love the guy, but it really sounds like his body is breaking down on him.

This is what happens when you cut a perfectly good, healthy LB (James Anderson) in favor of relying on a broken down, cheerleader from the sidelines the last two years. Not to mention, the LB you cut, broke this bums single season tackling record.

"Manage pain"?!? Are you serious? He has not done a good job of that the past two years, so what makes this year different?

And don't bring up TD coming back from three ACL injuries. TD is a breed of a different animal. He actually has played a full season now.

I agree. I love Jon Beason the man, have fond memories of Jon Beason the rookie, but have no confidence in Jon Beason the starting LB.

It may be time to move on from Beason just like Jeff Otah. If he cant get on the field in two years except for a handful of games, its time to move on and give healthy players a chance to play.

That AJ Klein pick is looking better and better at this point...

Like I said, you want a break out year Beas, play all 16!

Posted by: Mike W | Jul 25, 2013 1:23:04 PM

What i question from beas is tentative play. Not wanting having confidence in his body, not giving 100% in fear of injury.I think a panthers fan we don't credit Rivera enough for preparing for possible injury A.j klien and chase Blackburn in the wings.

Haven't even started camp and here we go with folks not ready. Unreal.

Posted by: Jellybean | Jul 25, 2013 1:43:54 PM

And here we go with you "Fair Weather Fans" that rag on Beason or Stewart or DeAngelo or ANY Of the players! NO Wonder people get on the fans of the Panthers! How about you get behind the team?

Posted by: REALCarolinaFAN | Jul 25, 2013 1:51:55 PM

I think every one of you are over thinking the situation way too much. The Klien pick was a value pick. It had nothing to do with a lack of confidence in Beason or Davis being healthy. If that we're the case Beason would've been traded or released not James Anderson. Injury happens in the nfl, it's not like your day job where you just sit around in the a/c all day. Plus lets see any of you go out with a bum knee or ankle, ain't happening. So please go ahead and say you wish Beason was gone or we should move on like we did from oath, but when he is on another team, a winning team, and plays as big of a role for them as he is capable of, don't start complaining about how the panthers got rid of him. Beason WILL be back this year and he WILL play well. He might not have the number of tackles that we are accustomed to but that's simply bc he's playing along side two beasts. Beason and kuechly can be just as good if not better than Willis and bowman

To Real Carolina fan: We WANT to get behind a team but 6-7-8 wins a year ain't gonna cut it. Most of us are out here busting our behinds for 10-15 bucks an hour paying top dollar to this team that has overpaid players that under perform while making gazillions.
It's time for the Panthers to shut up whining about sore ankles, knees, and toes and play some damn ball.
And coaches you need to be mindful that we won't put up with bad play calling, poor clock management, and being generally unprepared to think your way out of a wet sack.
I'm not sitting through another year of keystone cops ala NFL...

BUNCH OF SAME PATHETIC PEOPLE AS USUAL...ADRIAN PETERSON HAS HAD 2 MAJOR SURGERIES TOO...YOU PITIFUL UNGRATEFUL IDIOTS !!!You morons know nothing about the medical field of football injuries but you want to comment like you know.Talkin about "washed up". Glad people like Thomas Davis don't listen to you morons...I really can't stand this whinny disrespectful "fan base" on here.

beason won't play half the games this year. stewart will miss 1/3 of the games.

The only peeps I hear whining are the players.

I agree with you Bryant80 and if one more fan posts thinking that James Anderson is better than Beason at 80%, I would say you were blinded by false stats and a sorry D line.

Posted by: Ronnie Whitworth | Jul 25, 2013 4:01:27 PM

bryant maybe you can live year after year with mediocrity but I can't. I was embarrassed to be a fan last year's first 8 games. I grew up watching QB's that didn't need the coaches permission to call a time out. I watched coaches that understood the game and players that knew what they were supposed to do during a 2 minute drill. For 2 months last year this team looked like a bunch of prima donnas coached up by pee wee herman. It's no wonder SS beats someones ass every couple of years. I'm frustrated too.
It's time for the players and coaches to shut up, grow a pair and play some damn ball!!!

Most contract restructures involve getting a bolus of cash up front. If JB's salary this year was $5 million, he probably got $4 mil cash, then a salary reduction to $1 mil. This is treated like a signing bonus for salary cap purposes. The player doesn't lose a penny. It helps the cap this year, hurts the cap in future years.

Ronnie stop drinking the Beason juice. Anderson broke your precious hero's single season tackling record. That would qualify him as better in my book. Not to mention he didn't have any history of injuries or any off field issues (remember Beason's whole night club ordeal where he punched a guy?)

This team needs to shut up and win games. Point blank. I'm tired of the talk, the losing records, and no playoff appearances.

Posted by: D.W.G. | Jul 25, 2013 6:41:20 PM

D.W.G. Off the Field issues? Really? One thing he was not guilty, two if someone said those things about you, you would knock his block off soon. Did any of you think that maybe this is the doctor's call? Maybe he is 98% and want to make sure it is 100% and give him this last 6 weeks. Or maybe he is 100% and just want to be cautious. He is a vet, he knows the scheme his job assignments. Better to give a rookie or someone else a chance in PRESEASON than risk re-injuring something during a portion of the season that basically means nothing to Beason. It isn't as if they put him on the PUP list. How about getting behind your team instead of trying to make a big deal out of something very small.

d.w.g, Did you watch any of the Panther games that James Anderson played in, if so you would have noticed that most all of his tackles were made after a long run, which was usually because he did not stop the play five yards sooner,to put in words that you will understand, he %%$#@*&&^%^$$# screwed up.And if you knew anything about football, Chase Blackburn is far far better than Anderson, who by the way plays all three LB positions and makes most of his tackles at the line of scrimmage not five to eight yard down field. If Beason is not ready to go then Blackburn will fill in with out loosing a step, however I believe Beason will be ready and will show all you negative minded people that you don't know what you are talking about, and if you can't support the Panther's there are 31 other teams to be negative with. If you guys don't fill good about what is taking place with this years Panther's then there is no hope for any of you.

All of these people complaining about Beason will be the same ones calling him the greatest of all times if he does have a break out season. If you hate the team that much then stop supporting them, find another fan base to drag down.

time to start earning your money Joe, Jonathan. We been waiting, Busting for some good information.
Another thing all of you are guilty of complaining wether it be the team or the guys complaining about the complainers. Make a f--ING comment on the topic.

It is a good thing everyone is so passionate about these discussions and making their points known. I am sure the coaching staff and Mr. Richardson will collectively review everyones opinion to help make decisions about the direction of the team right now and in the future... #sarcasm

Seriously... people. Hate to burst your bubble, but unless you are a hired Sports critic... No one cares what you think. Get off your high horse and support your team. Talking crap in a message board is wasting your time because most people skip your comments anyways. With that said... I am excited about the start of Football season and can't wait to see how things play out for my favorite team. Go PANTHERS!!!!
