Panthers waive Austin, place Bryant on NFI list

The Panthers made a couple of minor moves Monday, waiving former Clemson offensive lineman Thomas Austin and placing wide receiver Lamont Bryant on the non-football injured list.

The release of Austin, coupled with Cincinnati's release of veteran guard Travelle Wharton on Monday, prompted questions about whether the Panthers were clearing room for Wharton to return to his former team.

That scenario is unlikely, according to a team source.

For starters, there are questions about Wharton's health. A salary-cap victim in 2012 after eight seasons with Carolina, Wharton injured his knee on the third play of the Bengals' preseason opener last year and missed the entire season.

Also, the Panthers have indicated they want to to give fourth-round pick Edmund Kugbila a long look at right guard, where Geoff Hangartner started last season before shifting to center after Ryan Kalil was hurt.

As for Bryant, the former undrafted free agent was sidelined during OTAs and minicamp with a hamstring injury, although Panthers coach Ron Rivera indicated recently that Bryant had been cleared for training camp.

Bryant will continue to count against the Panthers' 90-man active list and can be activated at any time before final roster cuts.

I would take Wharton with 2 blown out knees over Hangartner! I'm not worried about the secondary! The O-line worries me!

From what I have read Wharton is not ready yet. He was a great Panther and if he can get healthy soon I would love to see him come in and teach the rookie a thing or two.
