Rivera confirms interest in Mikell

Panthers coach Ron Rivera confirmed Thursday the team has interest in free agent safety Quintin Mikell, who was in Philadelphia when Rivera was an Eagles' assistant.

“Without getting into details, I think there's a little curiosity and that's about as much as I can say about that,” Rivera said before teeing off at a celebrity golf tournament hosted by Bobcats president Fred Whitfield.

Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com reported last week the Panthers and Mikell were talking, and a deal could be done soon.

Mikell, 32, has been a starter for six of his 10 NFL seasons, the last two with St. Louis. The Boise State product is an in-the-box safety who has finished with 75 tackles or more the past three seasons.

He would represent an upgrade over the Panthers' current candidates at strong safety, a field that includes undrafted rookie Robert Lester, free agent acquisition Mike Mitchell, second-year pro D.J. Campbell and Haruki Nakamura, who was benched midway through last season.

The Panthers report to training camp at Wofford in two weeks.

“He can play. He's a good football player,” Rivera said of Mikell. “We'll see how things go. It's still early. We've got a couple weeks left to go.”

I'd pass. My last FA signing at safety was phenomenal.

Hey Marty, how about coming up with an "All-Worst-Hurney" team. I think it would be fascinating. And sad.

Posted by: Ben Dover | Jul 11, 2013 4:21:13 PM

Who hurney? Nakamura? Lmao he was mentioned in the article for being benched..quit trolling loser

The team does not need a safety. They could use more help at cover corner. Forget about spending the money.

dubass comments as usual

Dont know much about him!!!
Hope the Panthers know what they're doing!

Posted by: Big Daddy | Jul 11, 2013 4:58:05 PM

Okay, let's get elementary as it seems we have some that are not really fans, but people that like to talk out of their rears...

The team DOES need a safety (we have Nakamura, a 6 rounder, and an undrafted rookie completing for the starting Strong Safety spot.

We have a solid, albeit average Free Safety that acts as our last line of defense. The Strong Safety needs to possess both a nose for tackling and some coverage ability (think of them as a faster LB with good coverage skills).

Mikell, while being up in age, is able to play this position for the Panthers than the options currently on team to date.

In the future, please don't post unless you can offer some form of thoughtful comments.

And for folks that want an All-Kitty Litter (worst of the worst Panther players), go to fan site -CSR.

On another note. Who invited Warren Sapp to that golf tournament? I know it was for charity, but goodness Sapp is probably the most hated opponent in team history. I still remember when the "Fan of The Game" called him out over the jumbotron. That was awesome.

I doubt there's a weaker roster spot on the Panthers right now than strong safety. Did someone neglect to tell their new GM that local favorite Corey Lynch (who upped his game with the Chargers last season) is still a free agent?

32 isn't old so if he can play, invite him to camp. I don't bash my boys but we need help there and he is a good player, if nothing else he'll be an good stopgap until they find someone else.

He is 32 which is getting up their in NFL years. However he had 101 tackles last year and was only release due to salary reasons. If we can get him at a discounted rate then we are very lucky. His old coach Jeff Fisher had nothing but praise for him. If Fisher thinks you are a good player then I want him on my team. Sign him and watch the benefits come.

Gettleman will be smart with this guy. I believe we will be fine with or without him. The key is our front 7 is good and deep. This will make poor DBs average, average DBs good and good DBs Great. We'll be good just like in 2003 with Howard and Cousins.

Posted by: Davethepanther | Jul 12, 2013 8:51:12 AM

@tim was saying the same thing 2 weeks ago, cousins and Howard was bad but our front 7 was excellent during those days I actually believe our secondary is better than the 2003 team atm

If u dont remember this guy when with the Eagles.... Then SIT DOWN AND SHUTUP!!!

Posted by: 10-4!! | Jul 13, 2013 8:00:42 AM

Forgive me for being so blunt...
whether they add thisor not doesnt matter, this team Defensively is going to b Aweasome. ThenJoshs are going to be adequate and then good Second half of season. So that leaves safefty... well, we add this experienced starter to this group WITH THIS FRONT SEVEN!!! FORGIVE ME BUT HolySH!T!!!!!
Between the "o" and "d" we are going to be the most Talented Panthers in team History!!
Maybe the most explosive team PERIOD in NFL history. Far fetched well maybe a little but ccompare player to player each and every position. Panthers defeciencies will equate to or better some where else on this team. DO IT AND ADD IT UP!

Posted by: 10-4!! | Jul 13, 2013 11:20:40 PM

Everybody better climb on now!!!
Everybodys gonna know who and where we are this year.
This team is goona make 2003's team GREEN.
Not hearing sht about the Panthers all summer so far... Typical!

Posted by: 10-4!! | Jul 13, 2013 11:27:15 PM

Forgive me on phone.. crap made for little people.

Posted by: 10-4!! | Jul 13, 2013 11:28:22 PM

The Panthers open up against Seattle and Marshawn Lynch, so I guess everybody will know soon enough how good the front seven is.
