Gettis among Panthers' final cuts

The Panthers' final cuts included just a couple of surprises, marked by the releases of veteran cornerback Drayton Florence, a free agent acquisition during the offseason, and wideout David Gettis, who was waived-injured.

With third-team quarterback Jimmy Clausen (shoulder) also getting waived-injured, the Panthers' 53-man roster includes more centers (three) than quarterbacks (two).

Carolina kept center Brian Folkerts as protection for backup center Jeff Byers, who made the team but has been dealing with a knee injury.

Panthers first-year general manager Dave Gettleman is almost certain to scan the cut lists around the league to find help along the offensive line and perhaps the secondary or receiving corps.

Gettis had a solid preseason, but injured his hamstring during warmups before Thursday's exhibition finale against Pittsburgh. The Panthers decided to go with five wideouts, influenced undoubtedly by the performance of new arrival Ted Ginn Jr. this month.

The Panthers also kept five defensive ends.

A pair of undrafted rookies made the team -- Wes Horton, a defensive end from Southern Cal, and Melvin White, a cornerback from Louisiana-Lafayette.

Here are the Panthers' moves Saturday to get to 53 players:

And Armanti Edwards is STILL a Carolina Panther.....

Posted by: TheRealJD | Aug 31, 2013 6:46:50 PM

Gettis wimps out in pre game...if you can't get on the field then you are of no value...if Stew can't come back we will cut him too...sick and tired of players saying they can't go....they make millions to play...Gettleman is already top notch in my book...are there any Hurney losers left??

Posted by: Bull123 | Aug 31, 2013 6:56:47 PM

Can not believe Gettis was cut over Edwards.

Posted by: par404 | Aug 31, 2013 6:58:54 PM

There is still a receiver named Edwards on the team, to answer your question.

Now how about someone actually posting 53 man roster.

Posted by: Logan | Aug 31, 2013 7:00:39 PM

Just when you think Jimmy is gone! He'll be placed on IR when he clears waivers!

Posted by: joe cool | Aug 31, 2013 7:07:38 PM

Gettleman is an idiot. Gettis hurt? Hixon has been hurt for 3 games and his entire career for the Giants. Hixon makes 1 preseason catch and Gettleman decides to keep "his boy", not because hes good or can help us, merely because he is a former Giant.

GTFO of here with this ish

There's a 53 man roster on the Carolina Panthers website. It does include Armanti Edwards and four TE's.

And Armanti Edwards still has a job. I can't believe it.

Waived/injured is going to have a bigger roster than the Panthers 53 before it is all over with. I did not know that Jimmy Clausen was injured?????? Injury settlements are coming down the road because these guys are still essentially on the the Panthers roster until they are released outright. There should be plenty of room to add some quality depth next week. Gettleman deserves a tip of the hat for the most part? I still do not understand the Drayton Florence decision however?????????

Posted by: Whitecomet77 | Aug 31, 2013 7:16:09 PM

Gettis was the second best receiver on the roster. Edwards looks like a baby giraffe running around out there. Jerry Richardson must have made this decision. Horrible Horrible decision.

Clausen's $$ is guaranteed this year, why not keep options open for next year with I/R

Sucks lester didnt make the team. I thought he was a steal. i agree with the rest of these moves and gettleman as a whole. Hes a business man who knows wat hes doing. I agree these guys that are injured are of no use anyways so why keep them. were making moves in the right direction.

I don't like our receiving corps if we were going to get rid of Gettis it's should have been last year. We could have used that roster spot then. And still we have Edwards who hasn't done dittly squat since becoming a panther. Hixon is still injury prone. Ginn has been great pre season but the jury is still out on him. Lafell needs to be more consistent. So technically all you have is Smith. I pray Gettleman brings in someone good for Cam he really deserves it. Mad we cut Roh too.

This roster wins a solid 6 games-

Posted by: Gettleman | Aug 31, 2013 7:43:48 PM

The waiver wire giveth and the waiver wire taketh away. One can only hope. I would guess there's maybe a half dozen guys who shouldn't get too comfortable with being a Panther just yet.

Posted by: BigMikey | Aug 31, 2013 7:44:07 PM

Oh, and this is Ted Ginn's year, I can feel it. Get on the bandwagon now, people! Breakout year!

Posted by: BigMikey | Aug 31, 2013 7:46:36 PM

It is apparent that Gettleman does see value in Armanti, or he would have cut him. All you haters should just get over it! He is developing into what they had hoped for, and believe the contributions he will make will be evident this year. No need to argue about it....how 'bout for once making an attempt to get behind him rather than tearing him down?

Posted by: David | Aug 31, 2013 7:48:22 PM

anybody that watched the panthers the last 2 years should not be surprised armanti made the cuts. he looked better than even gettis given the reps and given the reps were against 1st and 2nd team and not 3rd/4th team. gettis looked better than both hixon and ginn by far though. ginn cannot run routes underneath at all, it's either a go route or he's worthless. but he's valuable enough on the go and on the return to keep him for sure.

you SHOULD be surprised that hixon made it. over gettis........that floors me. somebody is going to pick gettis up. baddddd move, dude is a player.

gettis and campbell should have made the team.

carrying 10 o-lineman seems a bit extra, although I get keeping nate chandler because he can play D-line too. basically kept him over fua. don't get kolkerts making it though. not he AND byers.

how we managed to keep 6 corners not named drayton florence blows my mind too.

so we have 10 o line, and 10 defensive backs and 5 receivers and 3 runningbacks, 2 fullbacks, 3 tightends, 2 quarterbacks, 9 d-line (which seems 1 extra with chandler available), 6 linebackers (which seems lite given how many injuries we've had in past years), 3 specialists.....and a ton of questions over something that should have been pretty routine.

Armanti over gettis.....you have got to be $#|+|ng me!

Posted by: Brown91 | Aug 31, 2013 8:06:56 PM

I just knew you sad, miserable Armanti haters would be out today.

Armanti has improved every year. He had to learn an entire new position, and that takes time. It's easy to sit in your lazy boy and pretend like you know more then the paid decision makers. Gettleman did not draft Armanti, Rivera didn't draft Armanti. They have no reason to keep him around unless he earned it fair and square.

And LOL at the suggestion that Jerry made them keep him. Jerry has no reason to keep an App player around. If he is making those kind of decisions, why not keep the Wofford kid around?

Good job Armanti, keep doing work!!

Should have never got rid of Roh. However, good riddance to Gettis!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's about time. He only shows up during preseason and then stinks up the rest of the year. He remained on IR just about all of last year. So before all you Gettis lovers fuss:
Activated from reserve/physically unable to perform by Carolina (11/6/12)...Placed on reserve/physically unable to perform with an injured left hamstring by Carolina (8/27/12)...Placed on injured reserve with an injured left knee by Carolina (8/30/11)...Selected by Carolina in the sixth round (198th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft (4/24/10).
Spent the first eight games on the physically unable to perform list for Carolina while recovering from an injured left hamstring suffered during organized team activities in June...Played in two games, did not play in one game and was inactive for five games after being activated from the physically unable to perform list (11/8)...Did not record any statistics.
Time to take out the trash!!!!

This is not the final roster. CALM DOWN

Posted by: Al D | Aug 31, 2013 8:41:02 PM

First Ginn not better than Gettis!? What game were you watching? Ginn will be our savior and is the only guy we've ever had who can consistently stretch the field! Who cares if he can pick a hitch route out of a lineup, he's a star... maybe you don't know WR talent cause we've had so little of it but... say hello to a WR core with potential to score on every play!
Also, no Armani has no real talent... no team but us makes a 3 yr. project out of a div. 2 QB... a grandma could catch an NFL pass with that much training. But this year behind Ginn and Hixon at #3 WR... all he'll be catching will be Cam's water bottle.

Oh and yes the freakin preseason counts! All teams gear down their play so when a D that is vanilla, not consistently blitzing and not showing their best stuff is blowing up multiple quality teams up... it means they are monster talents! We have a legit top 3 D and with Cam throwing guys open vs. throwing at, over or behind them and an O-line that can open a few holes.. I bet we go at least 9-7. Maybe... maybe a wildcard birth.

Never had a problem with Armani, but gettis being cut is total bs, a 6'4 young star in the making, bad freaking decision
