Are Clausen's days in Carolina nearing an end?

For the past two seasons, Panthers third-team quarterback Jimmy Clausen has held a roster spot and done nothing but hold a clipboard on Sundays.

His role under new general manager Dave Gettleman actually could be reduced, which is to say, eliminated.

Gettleman came to Carolina from the Giants, whose philosophy in recent years has been to keep two quarterbacks – Eli Manning and David Carr. Gettleman told the Observer recently his approach in setting a roster is to identify the best 53 players, regardless of position.

It would be hard to make a case for Clausen being among those 53. He hasn't taken a snap in a real game since 2010, when he was thrown to the wolves to replace an injured and ineffective Matt Moore and went 1-9 as a starter.

Teammates and coaches like Clausen, and Ron Rivera often talks about the chemistry in the quarterback room among Cam Newton, Derek Anderson and Clausen. But that might not be enough for Clausen to keep his seat there.

Anderson has not had a great preseason, but he's a former Pro Bowler with a more successful track record than Clausen.

The Panthers could end up keeping all three quarterbacks. But if they get in a numbers crunch at another position, don't be surprised if Clausen ends up as the odd man out.

according to rotoworld his 2013 base salary is guaranteed. does not appear that anderson's salary is guaranteed.

comparing anderson in his prime to clausen as a rookie is a no brainer not even close comp......but now? i'm not so sure the margin is that vast. if you're talking about cutting a qb, might as well save a million in the process.

if somebody gets hurt, bring somebody in at that point and run a vanilla offense. until that happens, and even if that happens....i don't think anderson vs. clausen vs. keeping them both really matters at all. it's not like we're going to win games with anderson under center if cam missed a bunch of time.

Who cares? If the Panthers don't go to the playoffs this season or next...Cam Newton will be the odd man out.

I agree with charlottean. Keep clausen over Anderson. Also keep Armanti who could play qb in a pinch.

Before the pre-season I said 7-9 now ehh 6-10 MAYBE as Cam can't run a real conventional offense and is a ball hog in the read option ,so this will be his last season in Charlotte. Dave Gettleman will bring in "his" coach ,and QB.

For all you idiots that somehow think if the Panthers dont make the playoffs, Cam will be gone, yall must be crackheads. All the Panthers need to do is get the run game going early in the season or give Cam a real number 2 WR

Another thing to consider is which of the two backups can best mentor Cam Newton - he NEEDS it. Cam can be an elite in this game; his raw talent and athleticism are remarkable, but he needs fine tuning and an attitude adjustment. Newton could learn something from either quarterback, but I think Anderson wins that contest.

Hey Panthers1995, Cam signed a four year deal. You don't do the maths very good do you!!
Without Cam, this team wouldn't have sniffed 6-10 in 2010 or 7-9 last year. It's the preseason, stop freaking out. The last thing the Panther's need are more ignorant fans like you!!

Posted by: Evan | Aug 25, 2013 1:05:19 PM

Cam isn't going anywhere. Gettleman isn't going to bring in another QB, maybe another coach. Team is better than 7-9 based on defense improvements. Doesn't matter who is behind Cam because they wont run the offense as effective.
Cam ran a "conventional" offense second half of the season and killed it.

Like I said Cam will be gone ,because ANY team with a new GM without his own chosen coach/QB will make a change in year 3 without making the playoffs BET ON IT that's the way it is ,so put down that Kool aid...Diego/Evan/Jason this ain't Madden where Oh he can throw ,and pass fantasy BS ,so If you remember how long Gettleman took to answer when asked ,If Cam would be back next year he said quote "We need to make the playoffs ,and I'll leave it at that" end quote ,so in other words NO ,so put your 1 jersey's on eBay now while there still worth something!..Geez Cam's record is 13-19 have you watched the games? Idiots!

WHEN the O-line gets fixed, and the guys start holding onto the ball, 10-6 . May not be enough, but it will be a solid season!

Clausen has great work ethics. He just does not have the NFL caliber arm. I wish Cam had Clausens work ethics and demeanor.

Panthers1995 apparently you haven't been watching the games idiot...Cam is the SOLE reason we haven't been worse then 13-19...I don't remember the Defense and Special teams holding up their end of the deal in the past two year its a (count em) 1...2...3...phase game sounds like your one of those "fans" that had a heart attack because Luck decided to finish his senior year

Do not see Newton as a/the problem others do. Would prefer Anderson over Clausen any day this season. Any QB needs time to throw and the issue is the OL. Have always stated that Newton needs to spend a lot more time in the film room improving his brain and understanding of NFL football. That is still a work in progress.

Ha....look who the idiot is. Go look at superbowl winning QB's and see their first 2 season records. Not gonna argue..go join another team's fan base

Panthers1995 doesn't watch football. Gettleman would be stupid to dump Cam. Bet you will shut up when the right side gets fixed.

Clauses was in an absolute no-win situation due to the perfect storm of Jerry Richardson's fire sale, Marty Hurney's abject incompetence, and John Fox's end-of-contract ambivalence.

Yeah, Jimmy likely never would have been an NFL caliber QB, but he's displayed a world-class work ethic, and he's been an incredible gentleman. The Panther's should be proud of him, if for nothing else, being a good representative for the team.

Clausen over Anderson. Anderson looked bad, like the game past him by. Anderson seems to want to cruise on his past accomplishments.
I used to be a great volleyball player and could stuff a bb, now my vertical is around 2", any takers?

Used to be's don't count for anything but fundraising golf tournaments.

Trade Derek Anderson to the Buffalo Bills for a 5th or 6th rounder.

I do not think any moves will be made this year at QB, so Clausen is safe. That said: Clausen has come a long way since 2010, and quite frankly I think if Cam starts off against the Seahawks like he has played in the preseason I would bring in Clausen in a minute. Clausen has shown more pass accuracy then Cam and Anderson put together. Go Panther

Posted by: ahrcshaw | Aug 25, 2013 4:09:35 PM

Rivera in the past has chosen not to play his 1st team in the 4th preseason game, but if I were him I would this year just to get Cam etal in sink. I would give Cam no more then two drives, then I would bring in Clausen because Cam needs competition. So far this preseason Clausen has out played both Cam and Anderson and it should stir up some action. If nothing more it would improve Clausens net worth if he were to be traded at some later time. Cam look like he has no motivation at this point and that is not going to be good for the team. Go Panthers.

How can people or maybe fans or side fans say this dumb stuff. Cam gone after this year? Our running game is horrid because of our offenseive line. The pass protection is garbage and we only have steve smith and olsen who are a huge threat. If anything Cams ability to run has helped us. Without cam we would have been even worse these 2 years. Same basic lame fans that hate cam and dwell on his win/lose stats are bums. Cam cant win on his own. I think his stats also show he has been the best Qb stats ever in the nfl first 2 years. Thats speaks on his position and performance. Badthing is imagine what he could be with another #2 wr, running game and a oline.

In a heads up competition Armanti Edwards would be out Cam Newton at the QB position!

Posted by: Hokebuck | Aug 25, 2013 4:52:28 PM

Cam's deal is a 4 year deal with a team option for the 5th year. Then after that the Panthers could tag Cam for 2 more years. Cam is probably going to get paid by the Panthers after this season or early during next season. Cam will be the Panthers QB for the next 10 years easily. I'm not sure why people don't like the thought of having Cam here long term? He is quite possibly the most physically gifted QB of all time. He is also a lot smarter than he gets credit for & his football IQ is excellent. Cam has put up almost 9,500 yards & 62 TDs over his first two years as a pro. I'm not sure who people think we can get that has a brighter future? than Cam Newton?

Jimmie Clausen would not start for an Arena Football league team just because these guys come from Big tyme univ's don't mean they are ready for the NFL for example brady quinn matt linert mark sanchez colt mccoy jimmy clausen is garbage wether he remains with the team or he gets cut Cam Newton is inmature and he dosen't take the game serious enough to win on week after week no one is holding him accountable for anything but under armor to showcase there products the problem with the panthers they continue to bring the same broken down players every season and you get the same results lackluser performance!

Cam isn't going anywhere! He is a young QB with record numbers in his first two years. If the GM would cut him after 3yrs on a guaranteed contract he would be the one gone. Besides they have yet to provide him with a decent offensive line. Regardless of this year's record Cam will receive a new 7yr contract at the seasons end.
