Panthers cut 9 players, place Pilares on waived/injured

The Panthers made their first step toward trimming the roster to 75 by the Tuesday deadline by cutting nine players on Saturday.

QB Colby Cameron, P Jordan Gay, CB Nick Hixson, K Morgan Lineberry, WR Dale Moss, DE Louis Nzegwu, LB Ryan Rau, S Ricardo Silva and G Justin Wells were all waived Saturday.

The Panthers waived/injured T Bruce Campbell (shoulder), FB Mike Zordich (knee) and WR Kealoha Pilares (knee).

None of the cuts should come as a surprise. Cameron, the team's fourth-string quarterback, didn't see playing time Thursday against the Ravens, and Carolina may not even keep three quarterbacks as it is.

Nzegwu, despite totaling three sacks through the first two preseason games, was dispensable at a deep defensive end position. The same could be said for Rau at linebacker.

The release of Gay and Lineberry signals P Brad Nortman and K Graham Gano have won the specialist battles, which were never truly contested.

Campbell and Zordich were expected to be waived/injured, with Campbell undergoing surgery to repair a rotator cuff injury, and Zordich tore his ACL this preseason. Pilares injured his knee on the opening kickoff of Thursday's game, and coach Ron Rivera voiced concern for the injury later that night. The extent of the injury has yet to be released.

Those players will soon be eligible to revert to the injured reserve at the next waiver period.

The Panthers' roster now sits at 78 players (RB Jonathan Stewart is on active PUP), with three more needing to be trimmed by Tuesday afternoon to meet the deadline. Carolina must have its final 53-man roster by Saturday afternoon.

Pilares & Campbell maybe put on IR if/when they clear waivers. Be good for depth for next year's team.

Expect the first and second round picks to be o-linemen next year! 2 lineman away from a Super Bowl!

Yes Indeed......

Good to keep Klein vs Rau. Cutting Pilares could be a mistake.

Cutting only nine players probably indicates there some difference of opinion on who to cut by the powers to be. More discussions are needed to sort things out. Good luck Guys!!

Cut Clausen & keep Armanti for emergency QB

Posted by: stuart | Aug 24, 2013 6:42:57 PM

As bad as Nakamura is on defense, he plays special teams hard, so he'll make it.

I don't see what folks' love affair is with Pilares. He has some straight-line speed, but doesn't create any separation as a receiver and is an average kick-returner. He's no Ted Ginn by any stretch.

Fua needs to go ASAP. I'd rather have an extra DE than a useless Fua.

Armanti's not a bad option as an emergency QB. I do believe Jimmy Clausen's job is on the line.

pilares is a solid 5th or 6th receiver/special teamer. he's made some big plays in nfl games. simple as that. not as many as ginn, no but he also has had way less chances.

nakamura is a weak starting free safety. he's a solid backup free safety and special teamer. hate him as a starter. love him as a backup.

Armanti as third string QB? What makes you think after four years without taking a single snap at QB that he can come in and play in the NFL? Come back to reality App state fans...

Armani drafted as a QB 3 yrs ago would probably be a decent backup to Cam. Another Hurney failed project. We will be living with his screw ups for about 2 more yrs

he's taken a few game snaps in shotgun and I'm sure he's taken plenty of scout team reps as well.

we're not talking about playing him. you're talking about 3rd string emergency guy. he's better than clausen and knows the offense and is already going to contribute at receiver. newton AND anderson get hurt......he's every bit as capable as clausen.

all that hurney dead weight.

like cam and kuechly and gross and khalil and beason and davis and godfrey and munnerlyn and johnson and hardy and norman and lafell and olsen and silatolu and williams and stewart and nortman and edwards and edwards and gettis and thomas and alexander, etc. etc.

how is gettleman ever going to field a squad with such inadequate talent left for him? oh and all the cap space misery that left him capable of fielding this roster at least 13 million below the cap. yeah we need at least 2 years to undo what isn't/wasn't the problem.
