Godfrey out for the season as Panthers secondary takes a hit

The Panthers confirmed Monday free safety Charles Godfrey is done for the season after suffering an Achilles injury Sunday in Buffalo.

The confirmation of Godfrey's injury is the biggest blow to the Carolina secondary that has allowed 578 passing yards (22nd in the NFL) and a 72.2 opponent completion percentage (next-to-last in the league).

Ron Rivera said he spoke with general manager Dave Gettleman on Monday about whether the team would look outside the building for help at safety or shuffle around players on their current roster and/or practice squad.

"Since last year, we moved him to free safety and he's played about as well as you would like to have a free safety play," Rivera said of Godfrey.

Rivera said he has not gotten an update on CB Josh Thomas' concussion and said S Quintin Mikell's (ankle) status for Sunday's game is "touch and go." In all, five defensive backs (including CB Josh Norman and DB D.J. Moore) missed time against Buffalo with injury.

Rivera said if the Panthers played tomorrow, Mike Mitchell would be a starting safety while Moore and Colin Jones would compete for the other position.

Carolina also has undrafted rookie Robert Lester on the practice squad.

who else is looking forward to the return of nakamura? am i right? who's coming with me?

seriously though....might be our best option and would be awesome if he was able to make up for the atlanta game.

our secondary would have been fine healthy or losing anybody but godfrey. but losing him? that's brutal. not just for this year but going forward.

I would imagine thomas will miss some time too. that did not look good the second it happened.

Wonderful news. Man. What a shame of a start to a season. Things are looking bleak, and it's only Week 3. Crazy considering all the optimism surrounding the team in the preseason.

Next steps:

1. Replace Rivera/Shula.
2. Draft a #1 WR in the first round of the 2014 draft.
3. Then draft corner or safety.

The NY Giants are coming to town hungry for a win and Eli Manning will not throw 7 interceptions against this secondary. They should resign Drayton Florence immediately. I can't believe Ron Rivera still has a job today. This team has plummeted to the bottom of NFL team rankings ahead of only the Jacksonville Jaguars. The offensive line and the secondary are in shambles and Byron Bell is a turnstile at RT. This team needs a coaching change and sooner rather than later.

*3. Actually, draft OT
4. Then draft corner or safety

Posted by: Shaun NJ | Sep 16, 2013 2:37:43 PM

1.Cam/Rivera OUT!
2.Hire Nick Saban
3.Draft a QB Cam can't read D or throw accurate. Is 13-21 enough!
4.Draft WR/CB/S
5.Draft OL/LB/CB depth

Posted by: Nick Saban | Sep 16, 2013 3:09:22 PM

I'm with Nick Saban ,Cam was out played by a rookie ,and can't get a pre-snap read right or throw accurate enough to hit a barn ,enough is enough!

Posted by: Panthers1995 | Sep 16, 2013 3:11:50 PM

Saban & 1995 your dead on Cam just can't be consistent ,and looks down his targets long enough you would think he could come even close to them sheesh!..Oh and the NYG are next oh my it's 0-3 Eli will have 500yds passing...42-13 NYG maybe worse!

Posted by: QB | Sep 16, 2013 3:16:00 PM

Clean house starting with the QB and head coach who are miserably awful Trade Cam for a 2nd round pick while he's still got value the NFL D-coordinators have figured the one trick pony and his high school offense out.

Posted by: seenthisb4 | Sep 16, 2013 3:19:37 PM

Whitecomet77 you hit the nail on the head which Cam can't do ,and Eli won't have 7 picks ,but Cam could! It's time for Anderson to get a shot at QB enough of pouty towel ,Zero accuracy ,Zero leadership .and Rivera is a dumber version of Fox!...It is what it is our QB & coach are terrible ,and I hope Rivera is fired and Anderson starts after the bye week!

NOT only is Godfrey out for the season: this whole team has been out for the season since drafting Rivera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: zoom | Sep 16, 2013 3:28:10 PM

its funny how you keep seeing get rid of cam when he did what he supposed to do. is it his fault if he leave the field with 1:38 left in the game up six points, and the defense didnt do their job. or was it his place to not call any pass plays in that final drive. i just dont get it!!! 2 weeks the defense had a chance to step up late and FAIL both times but its cam fault. aslos 11 time he had the lead in the 4th quarter and still loss the game thats not cam thats coaching and defense.

Anyone has Jon Gruden's number?

Posted by: Jerry Richardson | Sep 16, 2013 3:41:07 PM

No matter who the QB is, he's got to have OLs who will engage and block! Our RBs HAVE TO learn NOT to go "help-block" a guy that's already being blocked, while letting someone else come in UNTOUCHED for a sack!

Posted by: J. Mixon | Sep 16, 2013 3:55:56 PM

You mean to say, Herman Edwards! "Not Gruden"

Panthers should draft a left tackle with the first round pick and a right tackle with the second round pick. Myron Bell was absolutly destroyed Sunday and Jordon Gross was bad too...

Posted by: Dom | Sep 16, 2013 4:25:43 PM

1. byron bell should NEVER be expected to check mario williams one on one on deep passing plays. that's just ignorant.

2. brandon lafell should not be the assumed #2 anymore. I would really like to see gettis brought back to get a shot at that job because he actually wanted it. lafell doesn't look like he does. ginn and hixon aren't that level of receiver, never were. good compliment guys.

3. we still need to draft OT 1st round next year because word is gross is retiring.

4. shula isn't the problem. the situation play calling has been all in all solid. he's been made to look bad by newton holding the ball too long (maybe receivers faults as well) and by a lot of drops by receivers. week one it was olsen, yesterday it was lafell. he was credited with 1, but he had 2.

5. we'll definitely need to think safety now too. silver lining with godfrey is that he was due to be restructured after this season and he'll surely be willing to do so now. but the downside is that he might be a shell of his former self when he gets back. he was playing great yesterday too. the play he got hurt on was huge.

the team is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. the execution in critical moments has always failed. the go for it vs. punt/fg has always been rivera's worst nightmare. he NEVER gets it right. why kick the fg when you're up 3 and the other team's kicker has already missed one from 42. and you have one of the most dangerous running QB's in the league especially in short yardage situations.

I said it all last year and the year before that rivera has no idea what he's doing. fox would have won all of these games and you guys hated fox. and no he isn't just winning because he has manning. remember.......fox won a playoff game with tebow. imagine what he could have done with cam.

2 close losses are just that. doesn't make the team bad.

you guys are acting like the giants aren't 0-2 coming off back to back dominant 9-7 seasons. we almost beat the seahawks who just waxed san fran. THINK about it. we outplayed buffalo through and through and then handed them the game.

game plan week 1 was great. play calling great.

leave it to rivera to second guess it and demand more passing which led to the disastrous 1st half yesterday with the INT and the sacks galore. what happened in the 2nd? points.

shula is not the problem.

BTW - no need to fire Rivera until the end of the season. If you do that then there is no chance they play better until next year. There is still a chance - a win Sunday against the Giants will keep us one game out of first place in the division with all those intra division games still on the schedule.

Posted by: Dom | Sep 16, 2013 4:27:47 PM

to be clear - firin Rivera now would just disrupt what the team has going and garrentee a 3 or 4 win season. The Panthers always play well inside the division so what they need right now is the fans behind them so they can get this first win. Panther fans and this newspaper is always so negative - just get behind the team and the coach for once! The Bills are far better than advertised and could end up challenging for a wildcard.

Everyone start selling their tickets so Giants will have home field advantage

Posted by: jeff | Sep 16, 2013 4:56:38 PM

dom, I agree.....but he's also never going to get those critical moments right. teams have done well under interim coaches before.

the team is playing WELL. we aren't getting dogged. we're getting beat in the details. rivera doesn't comprehend the details. he's just not a smart coach. good people person. bad strategist. he probably knows A LOT about A LOT of football. but he does not understand probabilities when it comes to 4th downs and time outs and kick vs. punt vs. go for it and prevent D and time of possession and value lost by sacks caused by dropping back entirely too much because "we aren't throwing it deep enough", etc.

the guy is just lost when it comes to the bigger picture thinking. and we may actually be able to salvage the season if someone else took over those duties. coordinators are fine it seems. talent as well although injuries in the secondary are going to burn us.

you could argue that firing rivera now ends the season but you could also argue that getting someone else identified now gives us a head start on next year. last thing we need is to lose 7 more like this. It will absolutely ruin cam if he isn't already ruined.

4 winning seasons out of 18 is not a sound business. Jerry should have canned Hurney same year as Fox and he had power to approve or disapprove the crazy contracts. Jerry hires and fires coaches, scouts etc and ultimately he is responsible for the crap on the field. If a business had 4 productive years out of 18 the shareholders should get a answer. The Panthers have proven they will never have a consistent product until we get a new owner. 4 out of 18 is not a way to run a business Jerry.

Posted by: jeff | Sep 16, 2013 5:26:31 PM

jeff's got it!!! The PROBLEM HAS ALWAYS BEEN RICHARDSON!! He has hires people that have no clue how to be successful in today's NFL.

It's not Rivera's fault, Richardson should have known not to hire someone with no head coaching experience and poor game management and he continues to keep him around.

It's not Cam's fault. Rivera won't give him control of the team. He can't call plays. They surround him with Division II lineman, 4th round WR's, and old, injured has been's.

It's not Shula's fault. Rivera is the one who promoted him. He has a terrible track record in coaching and they passed up on people with more experience and a winning resume.

It's not Gettlemen's fault. He was hired by Richardson and has done little to improve this team. Bringing in his useless NY Giant flunkies, not drafting any help for the franchise QB, making dumb player decisions and draft decisions, using the NY formula to build instead of working with the pieces you have and helping them.

This team is horribly ran. From Richardson, to Gettlemen, to Rivera, to Shula.

Cam could have Calvin Johnson/Chris Carter/Jerry Rice ,and he still couldn't hit them on target he just can't throw accurate.

Posted by: John Fox | Sep 16, 2013 6:17:02 PM

D.W.G. ain't NEVER Cams fault NOOO can't hit the side of a building ,pouts with a towel on his head ,widely known as NOT a great locker room guy ,and it's never his fault. Gettlemam will take another 2-3 years to get that "
Bringing in his useless NY Giant flunkies, not drafting any help for the franchise QB, making dumb player decisions and draft decisions, using the NY formula to build instead of working with the pieces you have and helping them." THAT is the stupidest comment I have EVER read HURNEY screwed this team up ,so bad it'll take years to fix ,and the first thing is trade Cam and fire Rivera there 13-21 what's it take son?put down the Cam-aid he's AWFUL!
