Injuries piling up for Panthers secondary

BUFFALO Carolina's secondary was dealt four blows in the first three quarters of Sunday's game against Buffalo.

Starting cornerback Josh Thomas left the game in the first half with a concussion after colliding with Bills wide receiver Robert Woods on a reverse. Thomas will not return to the game.

In the third quarter, cornerback Josh Norman, who took the place of Thomas, went out with a thigh injury after linebacker Thomas Davis collided with him on a 7-yard pass in the red zone. Norman missed the rest of the series but returned to the game with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Six plays later, free safety Charles Godfrey had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury. He broke up a would-be touchdown from E.J. Manuel to Stevie Johnson in the back of the end zone, but when he got back on his feet, he took a few steps and went to the ground.

D.J. Moore has replaced Norman and Mike Mitchell came in for Godfrey. The Panthers have Colin Jones as an emergency safety and there are no other active cornerbacks.

Update (3:30 p.m.): Mikell was carted off early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. He came up limping after stripping Manuel and causing a fumble. His return is questionable.

The Panther's appear to really be in trouble this year, if this game is any indication. Wow... gonna be a LONG season, I'm afraid.

Ron Rivera needs too be fired today!!!!!

Posted by: 10-4!! | Sep 15, 2013 4:19:07 PM

FIRE RON RIVERA IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! They played "not to lose" yet again, running the ball on the last drive, playing for a field goal, instead of a play action pass that might have fooled everybody. Then play a prevent defense the entire final drive with no blitzes. He will never learn that to be. Winner, you have to PLAY TO WIN, not playing consevstively to avoid making a mistake. This season is already over two games in. As a PSL holder since 1996, I am completely demoralized and disgusted.

play for fkin field goal and we havent stopped them all day!!!!!

Same old PANTHERS... Just can't seem to finish teams off...

Posted by: blackspeak | Sep 15, 2013 4:22:55 PM

You've got it Steve. FIRE Rivera immediately!

Posted by: Csoup | Sep 15, 2013 4:23:43 PM

Rivera might be the worst coach in the history of the NFL. Cowardly play calling on the last offensive and defensive possessions.

Once again Coach R. has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Thank You Mr. Richardson; WHY do you HATE the fans? WHY do you continue to do this to us?

We need to also fire the OC as well> Let them play or move out of the way!!!!!

Posted by: victor | Sep 15, 2013 4:30:51 PM

It was fourth and one and I was thinking if we kick a field goal they will go down the field and win the game. I'll be DARN if it didn't happen! With our history of losing games you have to go for it and pick up the first to run out the clock!

Posted by: Ryan | Sep 15, 2013 4:31:57 PM

If the PANTHERS lose the next two games, Rivera will be fired at the bye week. John Gruden will be brought in to replace him. Cam will have to compete for his job next year.

Panthers decides to blitz on the last play. OMG i'm so sick and tired of the poor coaching.

Posted by: Ryan | Sep 15, 2013 4:34:42 PM

Why are you guys so mad????? Carolina is just a practice team for the rest of the NFL. We aren't supposed to win games, we are supposed to give other teams practice so they will learn to play real teams in the NFL...One day when they get a real coach maybe we can be a real team.

Posted by: zoom | Sep 15, 2013 4:35:59 PM

WOW, 4th and 1 in the red zone and kicked a field goal. Why not go for it and maybe get a first down to run out the clock. By not doing so, the worst possible thing happened...lost to a touchdown by Buffalo. On the other hand, Buffalo could have scored anyway, but Panthers might have made a TD. Its anyone's guess.

Posted by: rangerjack | Sep 15, 2013 4:36:07 PM

Jon Gruden is not coming to the Panthers. Get real.

Posted by: Mteezee | Sep 15, 2013 4:36:45 PM

Fire Rivera ,bench Cam then at least we got a shot at 1-3 before the bye!

Posted by: John Fox | Sep 15, 2013 4:39:43 PM

Poor coaching and Cam over throwing guys.

Posted by: Ryan | Sep 15, 2013 4:39:58 PM

@rangerjack - How do you know?

Posted by: blackspeak | Sep 15, 2013 4:40:06 PM

How relatively short a time span back was it that so many were yelling "FIRE JOHN FOX?" (And look what Denver is doing?)

While I don't think Rivera can right this ship - blaming it all on the coach isn't a magic pill or panacea. Our team has much deeper problems than that.

Sorry 1-2 ,Oh we play the NYG make that 0-3 time for a house cleaning.

Posted by: John Fox | Sep 15, 2013 4:41:27 PM

@Sam Vimes - What are those "deeper problems"?

Posted by: blackspeak | Sep 15, 2013 4:41:56 PM

THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF TEAMS IN THE NFL: Teams that can win on any given Sunday. And then its the Panthers a team all alone that cant win on ANY SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY,THURSDAY, FRIDAY OR SATURDAY.

Posted by: NO SIR | Sep 15, 2013 4:42:15 PM

Sam it starts at the QB & Head coach!

Posted by: John Fox | Sep 15, 2013 4:42:47 PM

Panthers coaching is a joke. I sit on my couch and look at the injuries in the secondary and say there is no way they will kick a field goal and give the Bills the ball with all that time. If they get the first down then its game over, just kneel it and go home a winner. But as usual they find a way to lose and carry the banner of the worst 4th quarter team in the NFL. Cam needs to get the ball to the end zone instead of the uprights as the Bills gave us every opportunity to win with the turnovers in the red zone. I'm rethinking my december tickets but the value goes down everytime the panthers play.
