Panthers sign Quintin Mikell; Nakamura to IR

The Panthers have beefed up their secondary, signing free agent safety Quintin Mikell, the team announced Monday.

Mikell agreed to a 1-year deal, according to a league source. Terms were not disclosed.

Mikell talked to the Panthers in July, but the two sides could not reach a deal.

Mikell, 32, is a 10-year veteran, with six years as a starter. Most of his experience has been at strong safety, where he will compete with Mike Mitchell for the starting job in Carolina.

In a corresponding move, the Panthers placed backup safety Haruki Nakamura on injured reserve with a concussion.

Mikell has strong ties to Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott from their time together in Philadelphia. Mikell played with the Eagles from 2003-2010, when McDermott held a variety of defensive coaching posts and was eventually the Eagles' defensive coordinator.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera's last year in Philly coincided with Mikell's rookie season.

Mikell, who spent the last two years in St. Louis, has 90 career starts, with 12 interceptions and 16 forced fumbles. Mikell was a Pro Bowler in 2009 when he finished with 67 tackles and 12 pass breakups.

Mikell, who joined Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent from Boise State, was a member of the Eagles' 2004 team that lost to New England in the Super Bowl.

That would be 10-6. But agreed, SI way off. That pick shows how little research they do.

Hello everyones talking about SI. Whats the story...is there a link to the story?

This is a great signing for the Panthers. They also need to reach an injury settlement with Nakamura and move on from that signing which has not been good for the Panthers. Gettleman now needs to make some moves to upgrade the offensive line and possibly sign a QB to the practice squad. After that, the Panthers will be in good shape for the regular season. Go Panthers.

Isn't it great to have a dominating defense back in the Carolina's!

Posted by: Jared Pennington | Sep 2, 2013 12:08:44 PM

I was actually interested in seeing what Nakamura would do this year. Thought he had some really good plays in pre-season but lets be honest.......there is not a soul that would not make this upgrade. Cannot wait to see what the Panthers D does this year as I have always loved a good defense better than offense. Go Panthers!

very interesting, i haven't been impressed with mitchell at all, so this should be good.

I saw this and thought, eh, not a bad signing. But then when I saw Naka to IR I was ecstatic! No mo Naka!!'

Is Cam the right QB. I don't know if will ever be a good leader.

I always thought Lester had a chance to over time become a good safety.

@ "panther 4life" I don't have a link to the article, but SI called us the worst team in the NFC and predicted a 6-10 last place finish. So we're all excited for our Cats to prove those hippies wrong.

nakamura better use that concussion to get some of that settlement money.....and save it

Posted by: big gulps | Sep 2, 2013 1:13:42 PM

I want to know why we didn't sign him sooner and get him some practice time...even if he does already know the scheme. He needs to build chemistry with the rest of the guys out there.

^^^ i think gettleman thought he could get by with mitchell and nakamura. and tried to. and realized he couldn't.

similar to wharton. the good part is that nobody else signed these guys before us. it's not like there are a ton of former pro bowl safety's lying around on the waiver wire.

Posted by: charlottean | Sep 2, 2013 3:14:38 PM

This is really shady. Yes, I'm in favor of signing Mikell, but the fact they put Nakamura on the IR instead of cutting him is really shady. They now have to pay all of Nakamura's salary for this year. He had one year left, so maybe his signing bonus would go against the cap if he was cut? Or maybe he is really close to somebody in the organization?

The fact is Nakamura should have been cut in the middle of last season. Signing Nakamura to a 3 year deal was one of the worst moves Hurney ever made as GM.

The SI guy is Peter King who is predicting 6-10 for Panthers this year. How did this "expert" do with his predictions last year? He only got 7 of the 12 playoff teams right. So less than 60%. Of the 4 teams who made it to the AFC/NFC Championship games, he only got one right...New England. Wow, really went out on a limb for that one. And he had the Ravens losing in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. His predictions mean squat.

Nakamura was a glaring weakness in the secondary. He needed to be replaced. They were probably hoping to wait out Mikell to get a lower price, but they needed a solid safety to start the season fully loaded. Hopefully got a good deal. Still weaknesses on this team, but obvious handicap on D has been addressed. With D looking shored up, Shula lead offense will be the spotlight of scrutiny this year.

He predicted the panthers to win the superbowl when we went I think 4-12

Posted by: stiddy3 | Sep 2, 2013 5:11:21 PM

Not enough negativty......need nastar he would know to trash this signing somehow....maybe he's waiting till after the first game.

Big ?????????? for Gettleman. If Anderson is going to be the number 2 and scout team QB which means they do not intend to sign a QB to the practice squad, then who is the "emergency QB" if Cam and Anderson get injured..God forbid? Who is the emergency QB???...Armanti????? You can't tap the waiver wire or the street during an actual game. Go figure!
