Panthers secondary missing four regulars

The Panthers' grim situation in the secondary was laid out in black and white on the injury report: Three of the team's top defensive backs missed practice Wednesday, and a fourth was limited after aggravating an injury.

All Panthers coach Ron Rivera can do is hope some of the injured players return before Sunday's game with the Giants -- or start drawing up contingency plans.

"There is concern, I'm not going to kid you about that," Rivera said. "But hopefully by tomorrow, by Friday, we'll have those guys back on the field."

Cornerback/safety D.J. Moore said he won't be back until after the bye week due to a grade 2 MCL sprain. CB Josh Thomas (concussion) said he expects to play, while the status of S Quintin Mikell (ankle) and CB Josh Norman (thigh) is uncertain.

The injury report doesn't include starting free safety Charles Godfrey, who was lost for the season after tearing his Achilles at Buffalo.

Consider that undrafted safety Robert Lester, on his first day on the active roster, was the starting strong safety.

Rivera said the Panthers gave "a little bit" of consideration to bringing in a veteran to fill Godrey's spot before promoting Lester from the practice squad.

"We had a safety we had in training camp that we liked. The young man's got an opportunity," Rivera said. "That's why we wanted to keep him on the practice squad. He's the next best available for us."

I just want to laugh at this situation because I cant.
Hopefully the secondary shows up somehow, somehow...

Bum secondary paired with a joke of a head coach and a vanilla assed OC. Sounds like a recipe for a very high draft pick. I am pulling for R. Lester though.

Lester is a game time guy. He'll make some mistakes but i truly believe he will do well for he's a ballhawk

Meanwhile, Denver signs Winston Justice for the veteran minimum to bolster their offensive line. How'd we let that one get by us?

This team is like a blind lady asking a guy in a wheelchair to help her cross the street.
The Panthers are so bad that if we play Jacksonville FOX would not show it and probably show reruns of American Idol.

Could have brought back Nakamura. Not fond of him but he has to be the better option at this time.

Posted by: Taz | Sep 18, 2013 5:16:20 PM

I blame Gettleman for not addressing our 2 greatest needs, oline, and DB's.

Posted by: Don | Sep 18, 2013 5:42:44 PM

@ZOOM, Nakamura is on Ir, same w/ Clauson. We waived them to IR on cutdown day. Thus, they are still panthers. Go look on panthers.com and look up transactions. Then go to NFL and look up waived/IR.

Posted by: Don | Sep 18, 2013 6:04:02 PM

Last I seen was Nakamura was given a injury settlement. He was on the IR for a short while but now he`s not...But I agree with you, seems we could use him now if he`s available . And about the Denver signing ,well I still believe this coaching staff is shell shocked with everything else going wrong....just like the adjustments that are never made in a game.

Can Lotuleilei play in the backfield?

Posted by: Jerry Richardson | Sep 18, 2013 6:24:09 PM

This is the same Robert Lester who everyone thought would be the starter before the season started! Time for Travelle Wharton to replace Bell at Right Tackle!

Posted by: joe cool | Sep 18, 2013 6:24:19 PM

Gettleman could only do so much with 5 draft picks and a horrid cap situation - so all of you blaming him should actually blame Hurney and his blatant stupidity in drafts the last 9-10 years along with signing players to stupidly big contacts.

Thus said, hopefully Rivera hasnt cursed Lester by pulling for him. Everything Rivera does is tainted with failure, the man wont ever coach again in the NFL as a head coach after this run in CAR, and we were stupid to hire him.

Kerry Rhodes is available. Just saying, you could do a lot worse.

Posted by: 2696 | Sep 18, 2013 6:45:44 PM

Sheridan`s line has us as 1 point underdogs vs giants...I bet we get it handed to us at home. Sad to here Giants head coach brother passed away this week so Id say the Giants players will dedicate this game to their coach and put the hammer down and wont lift till its over...I HOPE I`M WRONG...

Posted by: joe | Sep 18, 2013 6:47:59 PM

Team needs were not properly addressed and veterans were cut so younger players could have a chance to play for less money. Gettleman inherited a bad situation along with a Head Coach whom he did not hire and that speaks for itself. Byron Bell needs to be replaced and as he is the biggest "turnstile" at RT in the NFL since the Jets got rid of Wayne Hunter. I agree with manu4t that Rivera will probably never get another head coaching opportunity in the NFL and he will probably be gone during the bye week. The secondary is in shambles and "it is what it is" and Rivera doesn't have a clue as to what to do about it.

I agree for now ...Gettleman just got here and its looking like our front 4 on defense is solid with rotation and linebackers are good ...Next year maybe we get the efensive backfield fixed and some offensive line help...So I think this guy deserves a chance to right the ship. Again he comes from a winning organization and know what it takes to stay competitive in this league....I did see this when he was with the giants if you did not produce on the field you werent around very long ...No works in progress with him either you got it or you out.....no Kerry colberts...running back shelton...injured players that stay around forever....Ever notice how the giants always have 2 or 3 receivers that get a 100 yards a game...That`s because he wont settle for 1 steve smith and no 2nd or 3rd receiver as long a we have.....Ginn has to start opposite smith..

Manu,
I think there is enough time to start having a general impression of Gettlemen.

He had 5 draft picks and only picked one starter (Star). His 4th round pick had a 7th round grade and he turned out to be an immediate bust.
He had a difficult cap situation but we have 13 million under the cap.
Who did he get: Hixon, Blackburn and Ginn. Ginn is the only one contributing.
He waited on Travelle Wharton to save a few dollars and that back fired. He missed camp and is still likely getting in shape.
He waited on Quentin Mikell who still admits he is out of shape.
Now we have our initially weak secondary gutted and what do they do. Call up a guy from the practice squad, strap a wing on him and say a prayer.
I think Gettlemen deserves a significant amount of this blame as well. He was there for the OC search and agreed on Shula.

some what ......of a relief Florence is back

Posted by: 10-4!! | Sep 18, 2013 7:56:10 PM

I am glad that Drayton Florence was resigned and now I agree that Byron Bell needs to be benched and Travelle Wharton needs to get the start at RT as Cam needs to remain upright and the turnstile needs to be a backup for the rest of the year and he will probably be cut when a new head coach comes on board...sooner or later.

Posted by: Whitecomet77 | Sep 18, 2013 9:14:53 PM

Thank you Rob K. Gettlemen has been horrible. His draft picks and roster moves have been no better then Hurney.

Posted by: D.W.G. | Sep 19, 2013 6:10:57 AM

Guys, Gettlemen is not the problem,Rivera is. I'm reading on all blogs that we are 13 million under the cap and people are throwing Gettlemen under the bus. Why? Do you understand that the reason we are under the cap IS because of Gettlemen. It really doesn't matter who you put on the field if your head coach doesn't know how to manage the game and to make changes on the fly. I say give Gettlemen some more time and this will be a better team in the long run. I also believe that Rivera will be on his way out soon, say like after game on sunday, because Rivera will find a way to lose this one too, either through bad play or management, both of which is the responsibility of the head coach.

The cap doesn't go up next year, Carolina already has a ton of money towards next years cap, and they'd like to keep Hardy. That's why the Panthers aren't using that cap space - they can, and plan to, roll it over to next year.

The Panthers salary cap issues are not just a one-year deal - they will have issues next year, and the one after that at least.

If you think being $13 million under the cap this year means all is well, and Gettlemen is dumb for not filling it up, frankly, you have no clue how the salary cap functions, and possibly a very poor concept of long-term planing in general.

Posted by: swizzlesticks | Sep 19, 2013 12:20:33 PM

who is still talking about "bad cap situation" ????

we were over 17 million under the cap for this year prior to signing lester and florence.

don't give me "yeah but next year" no......we're carrying over a TON of cap space from this year, have a ton of guys under contract and will be restructuring olsen and godfrey who both have insane cap figures. stewart too probably. that's standard business in the NFL.

we are FAR from in a bad cap situation.

Jones gets 3 picks in 2 games and doesn't start . Really amazing ! 4.3 speed. Unbelievable coaching !

We need to bring in Jack Del Rio to coach. He has the experience and the desire to be a good coach. He did well as our defensive coach when he was here under Fox.
